Also, I'm generally a big KR fan, but he got that tactical switch midway through the second half HORRIBLY wrong. It nearly lost us the game. What was he thinking?! To be fair, his changes rectified it when Kelly and Sykes came on, but still!
Agree 100%.

It almost feels as if KR thinks from time to time that he has to try something creative and imaginative; make some big, bold changes.

But today that meant playing the fifteen minutes or so between the Winnall/Barker and the Sykes/Kelly substitutions in what was basically a 4-2-4 formation. Unsurprisingly, Rovers then dominated the middle of the park and we barely got the ball forward once.

KR has a great eye for a player, is clearly a good man manager and under his watch we've become decidedly more dangerous on set plays.
But stick to 4-3-3 with only minor variants (e.g. 4-1-2-3, 4-2-3-1), Karl. When you get out of your comfort zone, it goes haywire!!!

Nah, we lost at home that season.

I think it's actually 1992/93!
2-1 at home (Beauchamp, Dave Penney), 1-0 away (Melville).

Correct. They have been one of those teams we struggle to get a result against. Even the win at theirs when roofe scored that wonder goal they battered us most of the game.

Have poured myself a big glass of something strengthening, that was a tough watch.

I don't think you can read too much into the performance itself, because those conditions were an anomaly. I went for a run at 5 o'clock here and couldn't use my phone for half an hour after I got back my fingers were so cold, so must have been absolutely grim for them. The pitch was clearly an issue too, players were slipping around from minute one. So while it wasn't our most fluid performance with the ball or the most committed physically (as I said at HT, our press was token at best), I think that can be forgiven.

That said, some of our defensive play can't be explained away by the conditions. It was pure lack of concentration. It will probably be lost in the (justified) excitement of a really good win in tricky conditions at a ground where our fortunes have been mixed in recent years, but I honestly don't think we could have too many complaints if we had lost that comfortably. They missed SO many chances from good positions. Thinking back on it, the Stevens save changed the game. A brilliant stop, before we went up the other end to score. But even then, they created enough in that second half to pull level at the very least. We defended very poorly in general for me, and it was worrying to see. If I was a Gas fan I'd be tearing my hair out. Also, I'm generally a big KR fan, but he got that tactical switch midway through the second half HORRIBLY wrong. It nearly lost us the game. What was he thinking?! To be fair, his changes rectified it when Kelly and Sykes came on, but still!

But it's important to look at the positives here, too. Barker, going forward, is quite clearly a level or two above this league. He's absolutely unplayable when he decides to go on a dribble. It's such a shame we'll probably never get to see him in a yellow shirt in person because on the telly, I honestly don't think I've ever seen anything like it at this level. He reminds me of our FA Cup ties in recent years when the opposition had Adama Traore (Boro) or Saint Maximin (last year), and they could just breeze past our full backs. He makes it look so easy. His pulling out of the challenge was poor and defensively and fitness-wise he still has work to do, but when he decides to go on a jolly with the ball, it really is the jolliest of jollies, and it's breathtaking. Lee looks tailor made for a Robinson team, all clever movement and quick feet, and I thought Gorrin had his best game for a while. Sykes also did well when he came on, and I think he's showing signs of looking like he could be on his way back to his best. While he wasn't generally outstanding, I also hope Henry gets the credit he deserves for his excellent assist today, after the pelters he got on the weekend (justifiably, imo). That moment of skill and interplay was essentially the difference between the two sides (Barker's goal just the cherry on top), and that was by no means an easy pass.

We're not going to go up by winning every game 4-0, and very few teams are going to fold in the manner of some of our opponents earlier in our run. Most games you're going to have to work bloody hard to get those three points. While the performance in terms of silky football wasn't there, we've had to work bloody hard in our last two wins to get the points, which is really good to see. People questioned this side's mentality earlier in the season, but I think they've shown that they've got character in abundance. Bouncing back from the weekend with a win in these conditions is really impressive.

We roll onto the next one. Given out momentum I love how quickly the games are rolling around at the moment - although I am worried about the Long injury.
Agree with that although I dont think Rovers had many decent chances. Most were shots outside the box. Stevens pulled off a great save from there best chance. We hit the post, sykes missed a one on one, so think we edged it on decent chances. First half an hour we dominated but wish our midfield would sometimes turn and run forward rather than always looking for the triangle pasd back to the two centre backs. Robinson gambled 2nd half with two up front as a result of henrys injury and we lost the midfield for 20 minutes. We looked dominant again when sykes and kelly came to strengthen the midfield.

Great 3 points in difficult conditions, although it was the same for both sides. Still concerned with the amount of clear cut chances the Gas had, i think if we were playing a decent side we may have been struggling for a point, although the changes due mostly to injuries didnt help.

A really good solid win - fair play to us for bouncing back. A few observations....

I think defensively we look a little complacent. I think we are so used to having the lions share of the ball that when its time to do the basics, we forget to flick the switch. I want to see us with more bite and aggression when picking up the second balls - more urgency! More primal instinct defending. Its interesting that we have signed Mcnally who is supposed to be very good at that.

We must do better stopping crosses coming in. Ruffels and Long have many qualities, but its too easy to get a yard or two on these two and deliver something dangerous. It doesn't help when the likes of Shodipo doesn't bust a gut to help out. We need to keep working with Shodipo because he has attacking talent but poor awareness regarding other duties.

Elliot Lee looks superb and a fantastic first touch and finish for his goal. Lovely balance, technique and energy. Looks a great signing.

Brandon Barker - a game changer. Pace, power, skill and a good goal tonight after good work from Forde. When he takes people on, it looks as if he's playing with his kids in the garden. Obviously a level above where we are. Insane work to get hold of him. Really important to have him available as a lot of our work is narrow and intricate. He gives us a little something else.

Really excited for Saturday. I would like to see Stevens, Forde (if Long injured), Ruffels, Moore, Atkinson, Gorrin, Sykes, Brannigan, Winnall, Lee and Barker start.

Some pretty decent and unexpected results tonight. Hull, Lincoln, Sunderland, Doncaster, Ipswich, Accrington all dropping points. The Pompey match was a win win, the very rare occasion when I wouldn’t have minded Swindon getting a point but equally happy they lost.

Saturdays matches will provide a few more dropping points so we must beat Wigan to capatalise.

Lincoln v Accrington
Sunderland v Doncaster
Shrewsbury v Ipswich
Crewe v Pompey
Charlton v Gillingham
Blackpool v posh
Plymouth v Fleetwood

God, what a scuffle.

Some good substitutions by Robbo though.

Sykes added a lot of drive and energy and he should be starting. Forde also fine once he got properly warmed up. Hope the injuries to Long and Henry aren’t serious.

Rovers look like relegation fodder to me. They can’t finish for toffee.

As for Kinniburgh, yes his insights are often pertinent. I particularly liked his callling out of Barker when he ducked out of that challenge.

But what a gabbler he can be.. Clearly someone has had a word with him because his delivery in the first half was as slow as Oxford’s build up play. By the end he was motor mouthing again .

Depth of squad won the points for us and two excellent finishes. But big question marks over the defence, looks like sides know they have a chance if they run at our centre backs. Therefore helpful Gorrin was back to his best tonight.

So well done for grinding out the points but that wasn’t very convincing.

First things first a great result, a double over the old Irene wheat munchers and we are edging our way back into the mix again.

The game was sewn up at 1-0 but we then made hard work of it...it happens and by lunchtime tomorrow nobody will really care too much about the slightly wretched performance other than KR and the coaching staff and in true Chippy Wilder style...we move on lol.

Thought Winnall when he came on played his part well as did Sykes aided and abetted with two decent strikes by the new boys icing the Memorial ground even further than it probably is now, now that the lights have gone out further. Goodnight Irene.

As an aside even with my National health specs having one lens completely blanked out with fabric elastoplast did anyone over a certain age think that Mr Barker has a similar stance and take off akin to Paulo Moody?

Perhaps it is the glasses?

COYY'S.

I have no issue with Kinniburgh's footballing input, as a pundit he has a lot to offer but, as a commentator he talks for too long and too quickly.
What is he? A minute ago you said he was a pundit and not a commentator but now you are saying he is a commentator but talks for too long.

Tisdale is clearly a manager under pressure and is spinning a tale here in my view.
Lots of repetitive answers and it sounds unconvincing.

Rovers look poor to me and it’s something like 12 defeats in 20 matches under Tisdale.

Er, the strike for his goal was Moody-esque, and the lad's a bit bigger than I was expecting......

.....but even in his absolute heyday, Moods was not exactly quick (let alone his second spell with us, when - though still occasionally effective - he was almost completely stationary!). Whereas Barker seems to be lightning.

I think that was worthwhile at the time to make that change to try and force Rovers back and get possession further up the pitch but when Rovers made their change it totally exposed gaps in the midfield.Once we changed back again we regained control in midfield.

Two observations:

A Barker runs onto the pitch and scores. That goal has got to be dedicated to Amersham Dave .

If we reach the pizza final, our game at Hull on 13th Match will be postponed. First available Tuesday is 27th April. Playing twice a week until May is going to be a big ask.

I think our defence (our whole back 5) is very composed at this level, and this is based on the amount of touches they get during the match, such as, the ball being played out from the back from Stevens to Atkinson, across to Moore, out wide to Sam Long, inside to Gorrin, back to Atkinson, out to the left to Ruffles, back inside to Gorrin, side pass to Moore, diagonal ball to Shadipo..... Win the ball back, slide it to Brannigan, move it on to Gorrin, back to Moore, side pass to Atkinson then start the attack again, this play gets the players comfortable on the ball for the opposing teams attackers to have do more to try and get past us....
It is very good on the eye, very effective and the the players know there is always another player close to them for an easy pass to get them out of trouble.....
