That was probably the best deadline day I've ever experienced as a fan. Aside from the brief moment when someone suggested Taylor was off to Barnsley, it was all just excitement with no anxiety that people would be leaving at all - ideal.
If you compare the squad we have now to the one we had on Dec 31, you have to say its a marked improvement. I'm not counting Cooper, Mous or Osei as 'going out', because they barely featured for us, so really you're weighing up Obita and Clare going out, one for a fee, with McNally, Lee, Grayson and Barker coming in. You have to say we're in a miles better position. I said after the Obita transfer that I would reserve judgment on the wisdom of that sale until I saw who was replacing him, and hoped it wouldn't be some green Premiership youngster. Well, it isn't - it's far better than that. You've got the experienced League One head in Lee, the exciting winger who should be too good for this level in Barker, and the utility defensive player in Grayson. It's basically everything Obita offered but just to a higher standard, and across three players. Our attacking options look so exciting now. Barker could absolutely rip this league a new one - anyone who's playing fairly regularly for a Rangers side dominating the SPL and going well in Europe but isn't considered to be quite making the grade and being kept out of the side by Ryan Kent should be a level or two above League One.
That all said, I have two immediate qualms still. I still feel we could be a touch light at left back. Grayson seems like a very promising young player, and of course he will probably absolutely excel in the role, but we've seen how wobbly a jack-of-all-trades type player can be at fullback with Forde and Hanson playing RB in recent years. Nothing overly worrying, and the most important thing is that we do have a body in the building now (and by all accounts Ruffs is an absolute iron man so I'm sure it won't matter), but still could be a source of anxiety in the future.
The other small query I have is with Lee's best position. Everything I've seen from people talking about him is that he's a #10 / advanced attacking midfielder type player. That's great, and we all know from that Luton side that he's more than good enough for this league at that role. But the issue we've had with Sykes, and to a lesser extent Henry recently, is that we don't really play a system that accommodates those kinds of players. More than happy to wait and see, and, as I say, he's more than proved himself good enough for this level. But something I will be keeping an eye on.
This isn't to P**s on the general parade! As I say, we're significantly stronger, to my eyes, than we were at the beginning of the window, and I am so excited to see Lee and Barker in particular in action. Yesterday was a huge statement of intent from the board, and a testament to the pulling power of KR in my view. The rest of the season should be extremely f*****g exciting.
