Home Match Day Thread 23/01/21 L1 - OUFC v Bristol Rovers

Excellent result.

Not the best of games, but played some nice football at times, and excellent closing down and winning the ball back.

Good to see Brannagan back, thought he had a good game, and got stuck in well.

Stevens looks very assured, and must surely now be considered our number 1.

Gorrin was excellent, breaks up the play, and gets the team going again so well.

Ruffels looks back to his old self, good defensive work, and got forward well, with a great cross in the first half.

Long is a beast, another solid display, player of the season in waiting for me.

Atkinson is settling in nicely at this level now, with some lovely runs forward, and solid defensively.

Taylor took his goals brilliantly, fully of energy, and was a constant nuisance.

Special mention for Elliott Moore, he's come on leaps and bounds since being given the armband, and reads the game really well.

Kelly frustrates a bit, grew into the game, and played well at times, but can be very wasteful with his passing.

Henry's performance kind of summed up his season so far, some good moments, but also some nightmare moments as well, but still such an important player.

Shodipo was ok, tracked back well at times, but had a pretty quiet game.

Agyei looked useful when he came on, would love to see him get some more game time.

Gutted for Mcguane, looks like he'll be out for a few weeks.

I'm not sure if Winnall has much future, maybe I'm being harsh, but he's had ages to get fit and up to speed, but looks like he can't really run!

All in all a good day at the office, and another 3 points on the board.

Well done Robbo and the lads!

I cannot believe you thought Shodipo was ‘ok’ yet Henry, apparently, had good moments? I must have been watching a different game. Shodipo was nothing but trouble on the right hand side and Henry was poor, yet again. He did absolutely nothing; unless you count his ‘ok’ corner that lead to the first goal, even though it took 2 well won headers to create the chance for Taylor..

If you ever want to cheer yourself up think that instead of has beens like Duberry thinking he is doing us a favour the last few years has seen us have young centre half’s like Dunkley, Nelson, Dickie and now Moore and Atkinson play for us, that and alcohol abuse is getting me through lock down 300.
Although I would much rather see us with young players on their way up rather than older players on their way down, I think saying that Dubes thought he was doing us a favour is very unfair. Unlike some other players in that bracket, I thought he always gave his best when he was playing for us - he used his experience well to make up for his lack of pace and really seemed to connect with the club at the time.

A few thoughts:

- The salary cap rules are moronic so a developing young player who is "over age" in reality can't be put back into the 1st team squad due to his whole annual salary having to be included, not just the period he is actually on the list.

- Elliott Moore was man of the match for me. He was excellent with the ball and pretty much won every header including an assist for Snake's 1st goal. Just fantastic. Rob Atkinson wasn't bad either!

- Kelly did well today. Some of his passing could have been better when in good positions, but some of the probing runs he made and how he got himself constantly involved in the game was excellent. Defensively he worked very hard as well and did pretty well.

- Alex Gorrin was his usual excellent self.

- Snake took his goals well. Whilst his run and finish for the 2nd from a cracking Josh Ruffels pass was very good, I enjoyed his 1st goal more as it was a proper poacher's goal.

- I hope Marcus McGuane's injury isn't too bad as he has been excellent for quite a while.

- Cam Bran did well and seems to have form even after the lay off.

- It was clear we were a bit rusty at the start with the passing and not quite clicking with the team movement.

- I'm liking our set pieces and the variety such as the Henry/Kelly corner. Atkinson and Moore are such a threat. Kudos goes to Mous on this.

- What a lovely win.

Winnall doesn’t look up for it. I get he hasn’t had much game time but from what he has had he can’t keep up with play, he can’t hold his run and gives away needless fouls. Maybe he just needs a run of games but for the moment if Taylor gets injured we look like we’re going to be toothless upfront.

Possibly try Taylor and Winnall upfront together at some point, Winnall has got the finishing ability but he doesn’t look capable of playing up there on his own. Could be worth giving ago as they’ve both played in 2 up top formations for most of there careers.

Absolutely agree with this...how many times did we hear "Elliott Moore mops up at the back" today? A fantastic display. Credit to the whole team today...another special word for that save from Jack Stevens. No word of a lie, only two or three keepers in L1 would have stopped that...the fact he had nothing to do up until then makes it all the more impressive.

Agree about Winnall which is a shame

I forgot to mention that save from Jack Stevens, just fantastic.

Their forward Hanlon looked dangerous and has scored a few goals, I remember all the whinging when we were said to be after him.

He needs games as he's had played only about 2 hours in total since coming back from injury. With little game time before that he hasn't had the chance to build partnerships and understand his teammates passes or them understand his runs. A classic example of this was Kelly passing to Cam Bran (it may have been somebody else) instead of putting the ball straight through after he made a run which would have put him clean through. Cam Bran couldn't pass it through as he was then offside.

Anyway, a couple of beers and a little cigar later..

Good result. Gas aren't that poor. Pretty decent performance. Winnall is, it's fair to say) up against it when he comes on and Kelly should have spotted that good run but he (Kelly) always has a mistake in him, although he's improving slowly.

Despite good performances from Long and Moore we're still sloppy in defence, defend too deep and let them play around the corners of the box.

Looking forward to the next three matches, of course.

Has Winnall actually come on when we needed to win the game rather than seeing out a game?would be interesting to see the difference as most of the time i remember, he comes on when the rest of the team drop off protecting the lead.
