Away Match Day Thread 10/11/2020 Papa Johns Trophy - Walsall v OUFC

So my take on tonight is:

Stevens: Did his job. Nothing more.

Whilst he didn't have to make any spectacular saves, I thought Jack Stevens helped the defence tonight. He swept up behind them excellently tonight on a quite a few occasions and was vocal in organising/letting them know when doing so. Something which isn't a strong point for Easty. The other thing I liked from Stevens was his coming for crosses which on a couple of occasions he cleared out players in his way, and he wasn't pulling out even when in process of getting taken out. Those are the reasons I was encouraged by Jack Stevens performance, not the eyecatching stuff but the more routine stuff and how solid he was doing them.

But we register a crocked Hanson.

But he was crocked again after the registration deadline and he was a central midfielder (who could also cover right back). With Cam Brannagan out, KR obviously thought he needed another. Personally, Hanson would have been offered out on loan for me anyway in the summer but injuries would have scuppered that probably. He'd be off the list in January for me anyway. This squad limit rule is just plain stupid especially with a salary cap.

Cooper:
  • Threaded a great through ball to Long out wide on the right which led to him crossing to Winnall for one of our best chances
  • Hit a superb crossfield ball to Obita who was free in miles of space on the left which also led to a chance
  • Tackled back covering for Long on a few occasions, one of which especially was superb defending and stopped a dangerous looking attack
  • Fizzed a couple of dangeous low balls into the box
  • Had a fairly decent shot saved and held by the keeper from distance
  • Danced through into the penalty box on the left late on, and was unlucky not to pick someone out
Can’t think of many other players who had as good an impact that game.

Also had that fantastic run from our half where he beat 3 or 4 players and then set up Winnall's 1st shot on goal that the keeper put behind for a corner.

He’s also quite skilfull

Yes and he doesn't get knocked off the ball easily. He really does remind me of Lee Tomlin, obviously I don't know if he will be anywhere near as good but his style is definitely similar.

He needs to start regularly and up against some stiffer opposition

So my take on tonight is:

Stevens: Did his job. Nothing more.

Obita: Looked really sharp and a ready made upgrade to Ruffels. He will struggle to keep him out of the side, based on that 45. Seems to offer more going forward.

Long: Solid. Did really well and his passing out from the back is getting better and better.

Jones: Looked okay. Probably nervous but he’s weak in the challenge and got bullied by their midget forward. Seems to take an age on the ball and under pressure, can definitely make a mistake or two. I’m not convinced.

Elechi: Looked VERY GOOD. Got a great delivery on him and can pass the ball really well. He also likes to play on the overlap, which is something we have been missing at LB

Kelly: Non-existent. Keeps on giving away silly fouls. Physically, he’s just not up to it.

Mous: Did okay. His legs look gone. Move him into a coaching role, in order to free up a squad place.

Hall: Legs look gone. Didn’t create enough for me but had a good run out, nevertheless. Loan him out in Jan.

Henry: No idea what’s going on with him but he’s just not on it. Had a few half chances and fucked them. Seems to drift in and out of games too much for me. If he cannot command a game like this, you know he is struggling..

Cooper: Man of the match. Always dangerous on the left hand side and caused problems, right until he came off.

Winnall: Got good service in the first half and could have scored 2 before half time. Very Taylor-esque in his play. If he gets the service, he will score - one day.
Jesus, Mous hasn’t played regularly since Feb so I’d expect his legs were gone.

Sorry Werthers -it's a fact. I love Simon but Jack is loud & commands his area - end of.

Watched match, listened to their commentary, kept saying how well Elechi was playing, looked solid at the back as well as getting forward, looked good enough to give Ruffels a run for his money, Jones played well with Mous alongside him.
Didnt think Hall had a very good game, like bambie on ice, kept falling over. Stevens again looked confident with what he had to deal with.

Anybody read Chris Williams report after the match on ifollow, think he saw a different match to what we have all been saying. Must be those tinted glasses again
