Transfer News Transfer window 2020/21

Berkoe's an interesting one, as he was on the cusp of the first team at the start of the season, making a handful of appearances in the cups. And he's just turned 19 so it's not like he's come to the natural end of his time in the youth team age-wise. I wonder what's gone on to see him depart after just a year, if true.
I think the intention is to get a second left back that is first team ready and it was felt that Berkoe was a couple of years away.

I would think that we would maybe look for someone similar to Anthony Forde on the right who can drop into LB when needed but would also be a decent squad player if Ruffels continues his run of form and fitness.

Lawrence Shankland and Matty Taylor would frighten the life out of defenders.

Where have you seen chat about Shankland coming to Oxford? He’s only a year into a 3-year deal at the Arabs who’ve just been promoted, so would cost a sizeable fee you’d think.

Any interest in bringing Sercombe back - squad player that gives us something different as an attacking midfield option and wouldn’t be on a high salary?

Garath McCleary has been released by Reading, almost signed for us last summer. Would certainly be a good signing in league 1.
33. Winger. Sadly likely to be losing his pace now. But like Jordan Graham- we have more pressing priorities for the limited budget. Looking forward to seeing Joel Cooper in the new season

Cheltenham showing interest in Sercombe, wouldnt be surprised if he went back to Exeter. Did well for us but think he has perhaps reached his level now at 33. We have to aim higher If possible.

We need to stick to the developmental model we have employed over the last 5 years. It has worked well for us on the pitch, as well as financially. Aside from signing a proven goalscorer like Taylor, I really dont want to see us signing anyone close to 30. We have experienced heads in the squad like Henry and Mous that know the club inside out. I would rather we took a punt on a younger prospect, instead of a 30 year old football league veteran.

Agree 100% - Taylor aside (and any other top, top proven guaranteed quality players on free transfers) we shouldn’t be looking at anyone older than 24 ideally

Yeah im totally against spending money on a player that has little to no resale value. That was the Oxford of old and financially, it got us nowhere. We are making big strides in that respect and one 'big money signing' gone wrong can undo all of that, rather quickly.

It's about getting the right blend of players. Mous is a leader on and off the pitch, and Mackie gave so much more than minutes on the pitch. Henry, Taylor and Eastwood have the experience but are quieter, and there is value in bringing in one or two players who are natural leaders to support what is often a very young side.

I think we do need players who are experienced, tough and physically sturdy - we can be a bit flimsy and don’t want too many like Ben Woodburn. But saying we should sign players just because you’ve heard of them and they were once good is pointless

I would add the leaders don't have to be older players.

Brannagan is pretty obviously a leader at 24 - Curtis Nelson was captain at Plymouth at a young age. All this talk of players like 29yo Jazz Richards that has hardly played for several seasons seems contrary to the strategy we've had for many seasons now.

With the financial situation as it is, I very much doubt we will be sinking large £££ into players on the wrong side of the age curve...going with the current plan, adding 12 month options on every new contract should be standard

I agree with you. There is a difference between signing a natural leader like a Mous or Mackie to aid the development of the younger players and desperately signing a 'marquee' player like Grigg for a small fortune.

As @werthersoriginal correctly said, signing players based on their former glory is a dangerous and expensive game. A game I feel we dont need to play anymore.

Despite the disappointment of the playoffs, I can't wait for the new season. I do hope don't get too many of the 'older pro on their way down' type players. I can see how that might be attractive as more of them become available because clubs are tightening their financial belts and the manager will know what he's getting. But although I there is wisdom in having a few older heads in the squad, I'd much rather see some more of the young players I've probably not even heard of yet. Over the last few seasons they have made the side more exciting to watch as well as being vital financially in making the club viable.

I am actually looking forward to a few more 'who?' signings!

The club are also monitoring Micheal Elechi’s development closely. Big hopes for him and he’s a very exciting full back.
