National News Official 2019 General Election Thread

I'm not blaming anyone on either side, just using examples of where someone arrested is not given privacy - do you think it's right for the Shadow Home Secretary to try and stop the press reporting on her son's arrest? Please enlighten me!
Your post was about football fans, not about Shadow Home Secretary progeny, so I’m not sure what you’re getting at. If you were coherent in your logic I might be able to help.

Johnson all but branded a coward by Andrew Neil ....

Said it before, its not about "personalities & TV game shows" its about party policies & people.
Not one single party will please everyone so its a bit of a percentages game, pick the party that best matches your belief`s.
To be frank it matters not who the "leader" is.

Did you read the post before? Or did you just jump in feet first as usual?

indeedy... vote for the party/ manifesto/ policies not the person(alities), as very well put, in this piece in the Independant....

Of course I did. Your feet were firmly in your mouth before my feet landed :)
“Some business about culpability of an individual who happens to be related to a party GB opposes” -> “yeah, but what about how football fans are treated, huh, folks?”. If you’re looking for supporters of liberty you need to be looking away from your conservative politicians, and dropping the populist dog whistle.

You best tell that to all the parties then who always make it about how shite the other guy is.

Politics has very much unfortunately become about the the cult of personality.

Listening to the vox pops on the campaign trail on the news last night, there were a depressingly large number of people basing who they will vote for on which person they like the most.

Would you call them stupid for doing so?

I think that's a very idealised view.

A single man or woman can make a huge difference to which way any organisation heads.

not that itll make much difference in the greater scheme... but, lib dems have (introduction of) safe standing at football in their manifesto (as they have had for the previous two GEs too)

And the problem with basing it on personality was well summed up by Ken Clarke before Bojo became leader....along the lines of:

Hes awfully good fun at a dinner party, but I wouldn't trust him to run a whelk stall.

Why is it that so many senior, respected, experienced political figures are of similar opinions on Bojo?

It has nothing to do with whether they like him or not and everything to do with the fact he doesn't have the minerals for the job.

When it comes to a political party the membership can pretty much have them removed if they go too far "off course". Despite his personal foibles I think BJ will be a steady hand on the rudder and if the policies/manifesto deliver 50% of the headlines he`ll be there for a good while yet.

My first foray into this thread but here we go …

On the flipside, aren’t the leaders of the main parties the embodiment and exponents of their policies? Corbyn’s personality is all over his policies and there’s no way of splitting them. If you don’t want Labour’s policies, you don’t want Corbyn. If you don’t like Corbyn the man, you’re not suddenly going to say ‘well, I despise his allotment-tending, grammar-school-apposing, boob-slapping tendencies, but his policy on corporate gains tax is alright’, are you?

People do tend to view their vote in different ways. People either view their vote as a vote for a party (and some couldn’t give two hoots if Hitler was representing them as long as he's wearing the right rosette), a person, policies/manifesto or just the person who exposes a similar view to them (again, Hitler would be an apt fit bearing some people’s views nowadays). In Oxford East, a vote of Anneliese Dodds would land you a competent MP – good for the locals to have a good egg represent them – but risk giving the keys to number 10 to Corbyn. It’s a circle that’s hard to square.

Another great quote from Prime Minister Boris Johnson:

“When I shamble round the park in my running gear late at night, and I come across that bunch of black kids, shrieking in the spooky corner by the disused gents, I would love to pretend that I don't turn a hair... But somehow or other a little beeper goes off in my brain. I'm not sure what triggers it but I put on a pathetic turn of speed. You might tell me that when they shout their cheery catcalls, I should smile. And, you know, maybe a big girl's blouse like me would break into an equally rapid lollop if it were a gang of white kids. Quite possibly. The trouble is, I'm not sure”

Interesting to hear Major, Heseltine, Clarke and Blair all speaking out against Johnson.
Some might say they are the voices of the past and those rejected by the voters.
It seems despite Johnson’s unwillingness to be interviewed by Neill and the obvious lies he espouses he still looks likely to win next week.
IF Labour had a more credible leader maybe Johnson might find this upcoming election more of a challenge. As for Jo Swinson, she may well be the voice of the centre, but in my view she is struggling to reach out to the voters.
In my opinion, the manifestos produced exemplify why this country no longer trusts politicians. Ridiculous claims of building a 100000 homes a year LD, cutting taxes and recruiting nurses and police, Cons.and repaying the WASPI women Lab. just goes to show how dishonest and brazen politicians are.
Keep telling lies about their crazy spending plans that haven’t been thoroughly worked through, and they hope the electorate will relate to them.
Expect a low turnout, with a Conservative win.
Corbyn and Swinson may well be gone before Christmas.

Johnson is really starting to draw parallels with the character 'brave brave sir robin ' in the Monty Python and the Holy Grail film.... 'brave , brave sir Robin' has his own minstrels to compose songs about his exploits, which they did, Sir Robin kept shirking danger, hence '... running away, and buggering off, brave , brave sir Robin'.... on that there parellel, johnson wont agree to be interviewed by Neil one on one on BBC, and, earlier today, 5 protesters turned up at one of his stage managed electioneering events, so Johnson had it on his toes... ran away... buggered off ..... IMO the opposite of how PM of UK should behave ...

now into December, never mind the 12 days of Christmas, here's the 12 lies of Brexit ....
