If it’s a toss up between a really good CB or Guthrie the surely we have to wait. We can’t pin our hopes on him as the CB of a promotion chasing side. Wreaks of a panic signing to me.
If we sign Guthrie, I think it'll be with him lined up as back up. I'm pretty sure we'll sign another CB as Nelson's replacement.

Wasn't Fosu out of contract? He WAS offered a new contract by Charlton, and so we would have had to pay some youth compensation, but it's not like having to buy a contracted player. Is that not right?

Still a fee though and if it was anything like Nelson’s compo then you’re looking at £100-£200k

Oh yes, still a fee. I wasn't disputing that, and could well be money well spent if KR can get him back on track. I suppose it's virtually impossible to get a young player from another English club nowadays without paying that sort of fee. Better of course if you can develop them yourself, as indeed we are trying to do.

Fees/compensation have been paid for the following players since Tiger came in (source wikipedia):

Dickie
Brannagan
Whyte
Hanson
Sun Dai
Sykes
Smith
Fosu
Allardyce

Some of these would have been rather high, others likely low/very low.
Regardless, I would guess compared to other league 1 clubs of similar size (particularly in terms of attendance/revenue), we are on the upper end of the amount of players for which fees were paid and total fees paid.

We are still a middle order club in league 1 and it is probably fair to say that we are not 1st choice for the players that we want. Maybe in danger of getting a bit carried away. Just saying.

Yes it might be a good thing to sign a couple of journeymen rather than aiming high all the time

The players we are aiming for are top 6 league 1/ bottom half championship so its no wonder that it is hard going..its a brave recruiting plan which either sees us with quality or scratching about if they don't sign

Interesting chat with Rob Hunt ( who is a member of our cricket club) on Saturday. I said we had only signed 2 senior players and Rob said he was not at all surprised as its still early days if you want decent players as they all get their agents shopping around. Rob has just signed for Sw****n from Oldham (Richie Wellens factor)

thought you were going to say he was coming back when i started reading that

Boring.

Nothing like last summer. The quality of targets appears a huge up grade and it isn’t difficult to get your head around the fact that better quality players have more interest in them hence more of a struggle closing deal.

I think it’s exactly like last summer.
We’re chasing players that seem to be taking an age to actually sign. KR in the press saying next week, 48hours, in the next few days, before the weekend blah blah blah. Then nothing??? Same as last summer. Agreed the quality of player might be better on paper but it’s still the same old bull.

The first game of the season last year was 4th August.
We signed:
Holmes, Hanson after the season had started.

Mackie on 18th July.
Whyte on 23th July.
McMahon, Norman on 1st July.

Loans in:
Carruthers 1st July
Garbutt 2nd July
Browne 24th July
Sam Smith 31st July

We’re actually worse off than last season in terms of players in. That quality we have already is better IMO.

But it was KR that said he didn’t want to be in this situation. So something isn’t right. Why did we all know about Fosu and he was actually training with us for weeks before it could be announced?

It was the case that other teams in the league had also not signed anyone but not anymore!

Actually I don’t think it really matters that players are joining late as long as they’re fit and have had a pre season with their current club. Whyte is a prime example. It’s more important that they’re good enough and clearly last summer they were not! Doesn’t mean dans shouldn’t be concerned though.

Anyone else pretty much just refreshing ox mail website waiting for news on a signing (or 2) ... It’s killing me!!!
Interesting thing Re:Guthrie is that, as well as being kept waiting by certain players, certain players are being kept waiting by the club.

There's been a lack of business done in general so far by all teams. There seems to be a stalemate that should be broken at some point by key signings. As soon as clubs higher up than us make their choices between their first choice targets and 'backups', then we might soon be able to sign, say, Preston's version of Guthrie.

However you want top look at it, facts can be boring too... Deja vu

But Guthrie wasn’t around at What king so maybe they’ve decided against
