Yeah for fear of diluting the thread we might as well indulge ourselves as we have no transfers/rumours to talk of!
As
@RyanioBirdio has said, League One/Two have been dumb in voting this through under the guise of protecting the pyramid and ensuring stability. The Championship proposal was for them to have a cap of 18million...League One 2.5m. This will obviously get rejected with the Championship citing "the gap to the Premiership is too big if we have the cap".
These's an interesting dynamic that's now coming up.
Take Atkinson for example. He is a 2023 contract so Ox are in a decent position (unless he starts to try and force a move) - if any club want him they will have to pay a considerable fee as there pool of supply has diminished.
If Atkinson is in his final year (like Branngan/Dickie before) I suspect we will be unable to extend their contracts if we can only move to x amount in wages...previously the Championship would have to double/triple wages to compete - now they could sign based on a few hundred quid.
Warne in the week was saying it was tough to get players out on loan as League One teams don't have the budget. But the Championship can't have it both ways...signing league One/Two talent then complaining when they can't loan them back out.
The Brexit/Wage cap/Squad Cap cliff edge has all come at once.
Have been banging on about it for a while but we do something pretty decent with our player trading - investing in this further is a no brainer. I'm fortunate to now see what other clubs have in this regard...there's a load of smart clubs in our league now that will all be shopping in U23s, Scotland, Ireland, Non-League along with us. How do we find an edge above them?
An additional, unmentioned aspect are players who now might find themselves without a club. There must be a host of late 20s that have failed to pick up a new contract. Not good enough for the Championship, but don't fit into any squad in League One/Two due to the cap.
The whole thing is entirely mad and makes and promotion from League One to the Championship near impossible...even without squad/wage limits the average salary is ~10mill with 14mill considered to be 'competitive'. Any clubs dropping from the Championship to League One will now have ~20mill player salary considered as the League One average until their contracts expire
