Transfer News Transfer window 2020/21

Thinking about the point Ryan made, and the subsequent comments, and of course the sad news about @amershamdave , maybe we all do need to take a step back for a minute.

It's pretty rare that we go into a transfer window in form, with a fairly balanced team and players coming back. Every club at this level would rip your arm off to have a fit and firing Cam Brannagan and Sam Winnall available, and they're like two new signings for us. Ruffels has found form, and with Obita and Shodipo our lefthand side is looking very strong. Atkinson and Moore look very good together, and are miles beyond what you'd expect from two players with barely 50 league games between them. Jack Stevens has grown and is rightly our no.1 and Sam Long has been sensational. Gorrin and McGuane are as good as it gets, and Kelly is much better than many give him credit for. Taylor hasn't really hit his stride yet, but is still scoring and also creating space for others to do the same. Henry is the one regular who has dropped below his best, but even he is ok even if we all hope for so much more!

So, we're not desperate! Yep, we need a centre back. Yep, a right winger will be great. Yep, a couple more development signings will be nice. But are we really in a position to start throwing our collective dummies out because nothing has happened yet?

Covid is f*****g everything up, and more clubs than we realise are desperately looking at their dwindling bank balances. If the football league gets through until the summer without losing a club or more, then we can all consider ourselves very lucky. And ultimately, it's only a sodding game!! Lives are being lost, families left devastated, businesses and livelihoods at stake. Football is escapism but is it really worth getting stressed over something that a manager did or didn't say, or even worse, some shite one of us idiots has posted on here??!!

Let's all be kind, be safe, and get through as best we can.

3 signings like that with views to make it permanent would sit well with any fan & would represent long term gain for OUFC like Dickie, Ledson, Lundstram, Roofe etc

Im not sure I’d actually want Woodburn back, ya know. Looked poo against us and as he’s been sent home by Blackpool, that doesn’t bode too well. Would cost a pretty penny too, I’d imagine..

I wouldn't be surprised to see Woodburn back. He was beginning to look half decent in an attacking midfielder role, and Robinson has flirted with the idea of playing a no.10 in the past.

There's a player in there that could be exceptional at this level, but it would be a gamble although a fairly cheap one with Liverpool just wanting him out on loan at this stage.

Psychologically, it must be really tough to be Woodburn.
My sympathy for overpaid young footballers is generally limited, but how do you motivate yourself for your latest loan move?

We've no idea how much some of these early deals cost, and the work that goes into getting a "fair" deal. We'd all love to see people coming in early, and I'm sure the club was working to make this happen. But if holding out a little longer means that we get the right players on the right contracts then surely that's a good thing?

What we should take comfort from is the fact that we were looking at bringing Cadden in, on a deal which would have cost £200k compo to Motherwell plus a fee to CC, and we were also looking at bringing Gavin Whyte back with a decent contribution towards his wages. Money is clearly available and if that now allows us to spend more on a quality CB and winger, and invest in a couple of youth prospects too, then this could be another very good window.
Oh God. Money defo available, looking at quality, came so close. Ultimate thing, we didnt.

I wouldn’t bother with Woodburn but yes to Holland

Just thinking ahead to next season where the squad size reduces to 20 (aged over 21 as of 1st January 2021 I assume)

Under contract for 21/22 and beyond:
1. Long
2. Atkinson
3. Moore
4. Hanson
5. Clare
6. Brannagan
7. Cooper
8. Agyei
9. Taylor
10. Winnall
11. Osei-Yaw

12. Gorrin (Assuming club option triggered)
13. Henry (Assuming club option triggered)
14. Obita (Assuming club option triggered)
15. Stevens (Bound to be offered a new deal?)
16. Ruffels (Bound to be offered a new deal?)

This assumes:
- Eastwood, Hall, Forde, Sykes, Napa who would all count towards the squad size are let go at end of their contracts in the summer.
- Mousinho retires from playing.
- Kelly, McGuane and Shodipo do not get signed permanently or on renewed loans. (McGuane would count towards squad size next season)

Still classed as U21 next season if kept:
- Asonganyi
- Chambers-Parillon
- Elechi
- Jones
- Lofthouse
- Lopes
- Sole
- Spasov
- Stevens (the outfield one)

If all 5 of the assumed do stay, then we'd have 4 squad places available prior to anyone leaving - Clare/Cooper/Osei would perhaps head that queue given current circumstances - and prior to any new permanent signings coming in this window, you would expect a permanent deal would be for at least 18 months rather than to the end of this season?

When you read your post you think not just with Pxford but all the other L1/2 clubs having to let players go because of the 20 man over 21 squad and all those players who won’t have clubs as a result in bad the new rules.

This confuses me... There is no squad size limit in the Championship!

I'm almost ready for 2021 - then January can begin. Three signings in quick succession. The latter part of January always goes past so quickly, then into Feb.
