Transfer News Transfer window 2020/21

"We're the division's form team, while no team at the top is really running away with it, suggesting everyone above is pretty inconsistent, too, and will take points off each other."

This is the crucial issue, isn't it. Over the past 15 games we're top 6 (6th over the past 15 games, 4th over the past 10 games, and top over the past 5 games). And now we've also got Cam Bran back. Of course there's no guarantee that we'll continue to play as well, but, as ttg pointed out, most other teams have been inconsistent, with only Portsmouth, Doncaster, and Lincoln doing consistently as well as, or better, than us over the past 15 games. So, much as I'd love to get a couple (or 4) new players in, there's really no reason to think that we couldn't make the playoffs even if we didn't sign anyone. Though in that case we'd need to stay free of serious injuries at the back! CB cover does seem to be essential.
This is huge imo. A fully fit CB alongside Gorrin and a MacGuane who has really found his feet in League 1 is one HELL of a proposition going forward. Must be in with a shout for being the most dominant midfield in the league. Suppose the big question is whether Cam can hit those levels after so long without regular football (a period that I would extend to pre-playoffs, too - making it nearly a year).

Signing nobody opens us to unnecessary risk, as you point out, we need to keep clear of injuries and some positions we are lacking in depth

Very few names mentioned by the ITKs, their sauce must have gone walkies

But you weren't comparing us with other clubs from this summer but with a different owner/manager/time period for Oxford.
Sorry mate but there was no pandemic when we needed a manager appointing and it was months! I think we must hold the record For longest manager saga.
There was no pandemic last season either! And we weren’t ready then either. In fact ever since Tiger arrived it’s all been a bit long winded. The recent CB calamity is a glaring example. Everyone said we need a CB at the start of the season even KR! Then we had a few injuries and he said it some more. Then the transfer window approached and he said it even more. Now here we are well into January and........... nothing. If you think that’s first class recruitment and everything is rosey then fair enough. I will look at what Mapp has done at Lincoln Christ even in a pandemic with little money with the utmost respect and hope that we could be in there position right now.
Don’t you listen to KR interviews? He’s been very diplomatic and doing an astounding job under the circumstances. but when he says business done early, wants the club to be brave, I want four players in etc etc and the club keep falling short it has to tell you something.

.... a MacGuane who has really found his feet in League 1
I don’t think we’ve seen anything yet (not in a bad way) Him going to be a player. has the potential to be one of the best players we’ve ever had. And that’s some boots to fill.

I wonder...

As far as I can tell, he's been fit, and the Blackpool loan appears to have been underwhelming. Will Liverpool look to offload, or will he go on another loan (Garbutt style, until his contract expires). Robinson rated him to the best of my knowledge and we may be the best bet for getting him back on track.

He's not currently in the plans, I say currently as they can of course change!

I never said it is 1st class but don't believe it is as doom and gloom as make out. And you are still comparing apples with pears when comparing MApp and KR at Oxford over this transfer window. Also, I'd say our recruitment last year was pretty good considering we made the play off final, and in 2020 made £ms in transfer fees whilst signing the likes of Elliott Moore and Rob Atkinson as Rob Dickie's replacement.

We've no idea how much some of these early deals cost, and the work that goes into getting a "fair" deal. We'd all love to see people coming in early, and I'm sure the club was working to make this happen. But if holding out a little longer means that we get the right players on the right contracts then surely that's a good thing?

What we should take comfort from is the fact that we were looking at bringing Cadden in, on a deal which would have cost £200k compo to Motherwell plus a fee to CC, and we were also looking at bringing Gavin Whyte back with a decent contribution towards his wages. Money is clearly available and if that now allows us to spend more on a quality CB and winger, and invest in a couple of youth prospects too, then this could be another very good window.

Unless other clubs fishing in the same water beat you to them. When you identify your targets and 2 of them have been in the building before then you surely have an idea of the costs involved to obtain them and it would be fairly obvious that others would be interested in getting their signature.
so it follows if you're truly after higher profile players that you'll need to offer them the right contracts or you're just wasting your time.
Right players on the Right contracts or Right players that go with the contracts you can offer there is a subtle difference.

Well you’ve mentioned 2 we were apparently after that we’ve never got, Browne was a possibility but now an ac injury has ruled that out, and the loanee White from the spuds if we were after him another one we’ve lost out on. So 2nd and 3rd choices again, Alrhough of Cooper had stayed with us and not have issues( which is beyond the clubs reach ) I would say that Cooper would have been a decent 2nd choice.

Nobody questions the time taken if KR keeps his mouth shut though do they! All of this talk of no signings yet is plain and simply a result of deadlines being set by him and subsequently being missed, how can’t you see that?!

Once deadlines are missed people jump to assumptions of conclusions about the reasons why... hardly surprising

We will speak with a number of people throughout a transfer window, some we'll get, some we won't. That doesn't mean that we end of with people who are 2nd, 3rd or 4th choice as situations change.

Take the Chris Cadden situation. Let's say that we were looking at a really promising young right winger, but whilst looking at him we get a whisper that Cadden could be available for £200k. Robinson knows that what he offers and sees the potential to turn a decent profit so puts a bid in, maybe even more than Hibs. Cadden is grateful but says that being home is more important and we move on. We haven't missed out on our first target, nor have we tried to do anything on the cheap, but circumstances were against us.

Every 6 months we go through the same thing without understanding the way football works!

Because no deadlines were set! Saying we want to get our business done early is massively subjective! We could still bring players in before our 2nd league game this year, which is pretty early!!! We could have agreed to move a player out to free up the spaces we needed, and have done that. We may have deals agreed in principal but due to restrictions have not yet brought players to the training ground to finalise things. We may be waiting for the FA Cup games this weekend to allow clubs to release players, or may be waiting for clubs to source replacements before completing our end.

There are many reasons why we haven't brought players in yet, but that doesn't mean that we're not in a good place at this time. Why can't you see that?

Scotchers : we are after centre back Conor Masterson of QPR. Robinson knows all about him from his time at Liverpool.
Doubt he’ll want to sit on the bench at L1 level though. It’s not easy.

We were linked with Rotherham’s out of favour centre back Curtis Tilt last week. Good age and plenty of experience.

I’m sorry but not even you can believe that ‘early’ didn’t mean prior to now

As for saying we’re in a bad place, I didn’t say that did I? It’s just useful for you to say to attempt to downplay my argument

The problem is S @Carpy17 says he sets sort of deadlines like get things done early and we always seem to get buisness done late. All KR has to do is keep buisness close to his chest and when we get the Klaxon we can all get excited and be careful pleasantly surprised.

We've played 2 games this year, won both. So whether we think of things as being early or otherwise, there's no rush. Maybe if you weren't so desperate to find fault in what Robinson says you'll see the bigger picture.
