Clare has looked much better going forward, but still needs to work hard when not in possession and to drop back and cover.

Away from home it's maybe better to have harder working and more flexible players on the bench. Hall, Hanson and Forde may not be perfect, but they can cover a number of positions whilst Shodipo and Agyei can offer width and pace (when they're on their game).

Not as controversial a selection as some want to make out!
The NON SELECTION is controversial because, for a start he was signed as our first choice right back. And rightly you say he needs to realise that he has to track back but if he can't even do that why on earth did we sign him!? It took KR a very long time to realise he was nowhere near being a L1 standard RB. Stubborness played a big part in that and it cost us. Now he's not even on the bench for whatever reason.

Have we had any actual confirmation that it was a tactical decision, rather than illness/injury?

It had nothing to do with stubbornness and everything to do with having no alternative. Long was playing centre back, Forde was playing centre mid and Hanson was injured. So KR stuck with him at right back for longer than he would have wanted.

Clare has played further up the pitch, and looked much better, but today wasn't a game for gung-ho attacking. I think we got the subs just about right today, and I'm that includes Clare.

So have I missed something what happened to Clare for him to be missing today?

Having said that, of course, they combined for the one decent bit of attacking play before Shodipo saw glory and missed the obvious square ball.
Given his strike-to-goals rate, though, I didn't mind him having a go from there.

Just about selecting a defensive, more versatile bench. Agyei and Shodipo for pace, Mous, Hanson, Forde and Hall for experience and versatility, and Eastwood in goal.

The only change would have been Clare for Hall, but Hall did well and deserved the chance.

Next 3 matches, Nothampton / Gas / Wimbledon , boot long ball teams, not adverse to putting the boot in when we have the ball, need a strong referee, also Gas will have their fans back, so dont think we are going to have it easy.

More versatile? Clare can play out wide and at right back 🙄

But we had Forde who was a better option at rb and could play anywhere across the middle. Clare gives us direct pace on the right, but not much more. At home I'd be more attacking and have him on the bench, away and I'm not sure we need him.

Deary me.
A player signed as a RB not suitable for gung-ho attacking. Who would have thought it!!

I doubt Bristol Rovers are long ball considering their sacked manager's approach and then his replacement in Paul Tisdale.

Not at all.
If you want to make a point. Please tell us what role you think Clare should be or is capable of playing as its not clear.
I thought I made that clear. Ckare is at his best as an attacking right midfield/winger. He's not at his best tracking back or working when out of possession. At home when taking the game to the opposition then he's worth a gamble, away when you need to be more reserved, there are better option.
