International News Russian War With Ukraine

Sounds exactly like my experience. My dad was in the army so had to wear uniform for our day in East Berlin. We were followed the whole time from when we crossed through checkpoint Charlie, and even had a guy in a mac and trilby pretending to look in shop windows when we turned around. I also remember the TV tower, being in A-platz and visiting the department store which had hardly anything in it. We also visited the soviet war memorial. It all looked quite different when I visited again in 2005!
The thing about the whole trip that spooked me the worst was driving from Helmstedt through East Germany to Berlin. The border guards were Russian and we had a time limit for how long we could take on the West-East corridor.
I'll definitely have a look at the film.
Yes, I was told about the transit times rules, but we flew in and out of Tegel airport so never experienced that.

Our friends were Hertha Berlin fans and they told of some pretty close shaves on trips back from following the team!

This is a good read if you're not aware too: https://thesefootballtimes.co/2016/07/19/peering-through-the-iron-curtain/

Apologies for going a bit off topic!

It would be a redundant World Cup. No other nation - apart from Russia's gang of weirdo supporters like Syria and North Korea - would acknowledge it. FIFA would probably toady to the Russians and allow them to have the trophy but everyone wise would know how hollow a 'victory' it would be.

It shouldn't happen but if Russia did qualify for the WC, imagine what a farce it would be in Qatar. It would actually be a just result to see teams refuse to play and the whole tournament break down.

Organise an alternative tournament for those countries who boycott. I'm confident which would get more coverage worldwide and have more legitimacy.

I`m no scientist or disaster management specialist but lobbing shells/bombs or whatever at a nuclear power station seems a rather stupid thing to do if you wish to "move in" to the area.

Scary times indeed.
If only there was some nearby reminder of what happens when a nuclear power plant goes wrong!

FIFA wouldn't dare push things, they are hanging on as it is. If they took a stand against the wishes of the football associations around the world then I've no doubt that a 'breakaway' World Cup would be established pretty quickly.

China set to stop showing EPL games this weekend so they showing of Ukraine support is not seen by the Chinese public.

Insane!

Do the show of support during every game until this is over. Allow goal scorers to take shirts off with pro-Ukraine shirts on underneath without getting a booking!

Always trust the experts.

Always trust the scientists.

‘In a letter posted on the trv-science.ru website, Russian researchers describe the war with Ukraine as ‘unfair’ and ‘senseless’. The signatories point out that many of them have relatives, friends and scientific colleagues in Ukraine, and say that the attack is a ‘cynical betrayal’ of previous generations of Russians and Ukrainians who fought together during the second world war.’

A ceasefire has been agreed between Russia and the Ukraine in the cities of Mariupol and Volnovakha to allow civilians to leave, but Russia have broke the ceasefire and have started bombing again.

If a temporary ceasefire has been agreed to allow people to leave and for humanitarian aid to arrive, then surely the UN should be there to oversee it (in their humanitarian, rather than security role). That way, any breach of a ceasefire from the Russian side, as has been widely reported, can be independently verified.

Unless the Russians won't let them in of course because they don't trust them to be impartial (or they know they have something to hide)....which again tells you all you need to know about Putin's regime.

If this was a limited and specific military operation, then this would be straightforward. But as we know it's an indiscriminately bomb the living s**t out of everything, type of operation, it will be "problematic".

Doubt whether the Russians would allow the UN to police a ceasefire and the Russians I don’t think give one iota about a ceasefire.

No, not to police it, but to help with the humanitarian effort, which is part of their brief.

Policing a ceasefire would require a UN security council resolution, Russia are on the security council and simply won't agree.

But how can they argue not to let them in to oversee the humanitarian effort if they really have nothing to hide?

The more news coverage I watch, the more this reminds me of the decimation of Aleppo.
We and the rest of the world watched as that happened.
Surely we cannot stand back any longer, but without the backing of Biden, the European element of NATO seem spineless.
