Fan's View Fan's View 22/23 - No.35 - Shrewsbury at home

agree with the Brown long throw time and again- its not like we've sore from one ( not that I can recall) - by all means use it to change things on occasion, but (nearly) all the time?

also agree Bate and Goodrham were pretty damn good v Shrewsbury

Bate looks a lot better without Brannagan in the team. Young Lewis steams forward more without feeling the obligation of passing it to CB.

Bate is class - but we’ll lose him at the end of the season. For now, though, a small glimmer of light in dark and depressing times.
But this is the problem with some of these loans, they do well, become a fundamental part of the team and then go back to their parent club and we are rebuilding yet again. It simply prevents long term growth and momentum, especially with KR's rebuilding strategy each summer.

Isn’t that true of every club in our division though? The problem comes when loanees fill the most important positions, which you could argue we’re approaching

Another fine report, thanks Paul.
The point, of course, is that it's no goddam use us improving a bit if we are still losing. We can no longer afford to go on like this.

MK are an extreme example of it, almost took automatic promotion last season, then their loanees go back and they are in a relegation fight this season. Similar happened to Shrewsbury a few years back as well. The loan system is really messing with lower division football.

You have to use the loan system else you are at a disadvantage but with being allowed 5 players it could end up half your starting outfield team being on loan, meaning you are changing at least half your side every season, no real continuity or team building can happen if that is the case.

It is a real catch-22 isn't it. The system is biased towards the big clubs (as usual). They have so much money they can sweep up all of the young talent at a minimal (to them) cost and hold on to players who would normally have gravitated down the pyramid to get contracts. And as you say, teams in L1 and L2 are really forced into using the loan system to get players and develop them for the bigger teams, otherwise they will get left behind.

Higher division clubs clearly loan young players out with expectations (contractual or not) that they will get regular football. We expect the same with our loans to national League sides. That can make life difficult for managers. Ideally you would have a full squad of signed players plus a few young loanees getting occasional starts, on the bench, or covering for injuries etc.

Bate of course has been a shining light this season, but it's testimony to the lack of balance in our squad that he has to be played week in week out due to the shortage of midfield options.

I mean they did also lose the best CB (Darling) and best attacking mid (Twine) in the division last summer. For a combined fee over £4.6 million. But looking how they're doing, I guess we've found whose recruitment was even worse than ours in the summer!
