International News Covid-19 .....

Well, looks like our lockdown worked. Not one transmission from the infected guy. Dodged a bullet.

We’ve now got a week of mask wearing, a bit of distancing (Max 150 people at places, 4m^2 rule, 20 people at home, can’t leave the region (~100 x 200 km), everything open except the casino and nightclubs).

Fancy, locking down whilst numbers are low. It will never catch on.

What’s concerning me know is the growing pressure calling for an easing of lockdown now that numbers have started to fall.

Have we or the media learned nothing from the previous calls of easing lockdown too early?

This damned virus will just rip through again if we budge too soon from where we are and we’ll have it all over again.

Patience required, and I hope the government do not buckle under pressure until the vaccination numbers are much higher.

Agree - vaccination numbers need to be much higher AND numbers in hospital/numbers of daily deaths need to be much much lower. Infection rates going down is really really good news, but with 4000 odd mutations already identified (although many don't change the strength or transmissibility of the virus: https://www.bmj.com/content/371/bmj.m4857), I would've thought that relaxing too soon and allowing community transmission to go back up will only increase the probability of a problematic mutation.

Whilst we're doing well, lets not stuff it up now just because a few 1922 swivel-eyes claim their "liberty" is being taken from them (poor lambs) and want to open everything up so they and their chums can make more money. Good job these pencil-necks are nowhere near authority in a time of global crisis.....

I mean, I do get it. The population is suffering, businesses, parents, kids, culture, tourism and all the rest of it. But it is absolutely bonkers to be saying "open it all up!" when over 1,000 people have died on average every day this year so far in the UK. Technically speaking, both deaths and cases have to be near zero to return to normal, vaccinations or not.

Slowly because we still aren't really locked down

How long before jabs start having an impact on numbers?

A little early but office for national statistics released early data showing that in antibody tests the over 80 age group had by far the highest amount of antibodies.

Already started in combination with the post Christmas lock-down, cases are gradually decreasing as have admissions.
Takes about 3 weeks to get a decent level of antibodies after the jab then most folk will have 8 weeks to their second shot.
Next announcements from HMG are due around 22nd Feb to be implemented early March.
There is talk all 9 layers of patients will be done (or offered the jab) by May which is pretty much everyone over 50.

Useful tip...... buy yourself a pulse oximeter, about £20.

If you happen to get Covid use the oximeter to monitor your Oxygen stats 3 times a day.

If the level drops below 94% get in touch with 111 PDQ.

Silent hypoxia occurs frequently with Covid yet patients don`t "feel bad" until they are heading down hill far too rapidly.

We now have a "remote" Covid ward where people are at home, but contacted 3 times a day by nurses as a check up and admitted if they begin to deteriorate. Had 130 folk have gone through it and only 4 admissions from that group.

WHO report on investigation into origin of covid out today.

My posts on this thread demonstrate I am no conspiracy theory but the wording of this finding is incredible:

The final scenario is that SARS-CoV-2 was leaked from the Wuhan Institute of Virology, which is known to have studied captive coronaviruses. Ben Embarek ruled out the possibility and said it would not be subject to further research. Accidents happen, he said, but it was "very unlikely" in this case.

No evidence, no data, no explanation. Did they write it or did China?

It is a bit weird. Even just a simple 'we checked the database to see the sequencing of all the viruses and none of them matched' Would have been something.

Ive said it before. Theres something called Occams Razor which is particularly relevant to covid.

Im not a conpiracy theorist by any stretch, but i am 99.99% certain this was an accidental lab escape. Not deliberate.

What has that theory got to do with Occam’s razor?

Occam’s razor says that it arose in nature. That is hands down the most parsimonious explanation.
