International News Covid-19 .....

Expect more QE and/or negative interest rates before too long ?

If only we had a manufacturing based economy based on the value/worth of what we sell tariff-free into the worlds biggest markets.....that would make recovery a whole lot easier....[emoji848]

Alternative view..... you can`t negotiate for as long as is needed whilst hospitals start filling up and infection rates soar.
Sometimes you have to suck it up for the greater good of the people you proport to defend.
MCC spent £8.5million refurbing the town Hall and £3.7m on ICT form a rather healthy budget.......

"Financial Summary 2018/19 The revenue and capital budgets for the forthcoming financial year are agreed by full Council in March. The gross revenue spend represents the entirety of our revenue expenditure totalling £1,555m in 2018/19. This includes the money spent on housing benefit payments and the funding of schools which is mainly funded by Government grants."

So £5m in non-political terms is b****r all to either of them......
What your point? You sound like you typical Tory minister quoting large number completely without context or comparison simply to stifle debate because you know the act of unpicking the numbers is a rabbit hole you'll never get out of but it will distract from the matter in hand.

Could the government afford more money? - yes, given what they've spaffed on various vanity projects already without so much as a blink of an eye (on their part at least)
Are the poorest people on the lowest incomes going to be adversely affected by this to the point that some will have to decide between heating and eating on some days? - quite probably yes.

Will the government continue to obfuscate while yet again the charity sector jumps in to try and help the worst affected? - almost certainly!

So your saying other geographical areas have had more than Manchester
So far we know that:
  • Liverpool City Region is receiving £14m for the first pot and £30m to support business
  • Lancashire is receiving £12m and £30m
  • South Yorkshire is receiving £11m and £30m
  • Greater Manchester is receiving £22m and £60m is being made available (it did not agree to the £60m and had asked for more money)
If Manchester received the full £82m, the amounts received PER CAPITA would be roughly similar in each area @ £28 or £29 per person. But the £60m for Manchester has been withdrawn because the request for an additional (costed) £5m was unacceptable to the government.

Also don't forget that GM has more business per capita than Lancashire which is where the government's claim it is being even handed falls apart.

And the breakdown of those businesses that will need to close under Tier 3? You can`t just broad brush "more businesses" if many can continue to trade and pay their staff.
Getting into that rabbit hole together..... it would be so much easier if HMG said it is X amount based on population for entering Tier 3, how the Council choose to use it is (should be!) a local decision.

It's not for me to make the case for GM, it's for GM. It made its case in the spirit if true consultation and the government demonstrated that the consultation was a charade by only offer what they offered the rest based on a formula. This government loves playing games like this because people like you seem to fall for them.

I`m falling for nothing thank you.
The government has to be responsive, primarily to the infection rate & health problems. The financial reaction takes more planning and strategy.
It`s no good promising a short term fix to what could be a long term problem and then leaving gaping holes for people to fall through.
Anyway... Rishi is on the telly adapting the Government support for everyone.

interesting
More than happy to throw more data at this to increase understanding but the guy say the May 20 peak was no worse than Jan 18 and Jan 19 but didn't point out that Ireland wasn't in lockdown in those previous Januarys. Strange.

So Burnham's efforts haven't all been in vain.

Or the Government are being flexible and adaptable in unchartered waters?
Health first, deal with the consequences of the necessary decisions shortly after.

Kemi Badenoch is on now, eloquent and factual much like Rishi.
These new Tories could make life very difficult for the opposition.
