I am aware that Kenny replaced Baldock - Long was there the entire time as the second right back. That was my point. We had two right backs available at any one moment all season. Whether it was ‘obvious’ that Long was the backup or not isn’t the point: he was there.Sorry but just on that penultimate paragraph, I fear that may be rewriting history a bit. Evans joined on loan in November; he didn’t appear in the league until mid December. I also wouldn’t describe him as an ‘out and out leftback’ - he was very much a young LB/LWB/LW still figuring out his best position. Likewise Kenny joined in January once Baldock had been recalled. If they did overlap, it would only have been for a couple of weeks. To suggest that we went the full season with strong backup in each position is disingenuous.
And yes, Evans joined after the season started, but we had Cameron Gayle before then and moved for Evans once Gayle didn’t work out. We had bodies, which is more than we’ve had in those areas for the last couple of years. Evans might have been ‘attack minded’ or more of a LWB compared to Skarz and his defensive style, but the point is that he again provided a second player competing / covering one spot. None of that is disingenuous and it disproves what has been said previously about how we have no less defenders now than we did under Appleton in L2.
We need defenders - we don’t even have Forde pretending to be a right back anymore.
