That’s not true of Browne or Brannagan, both of whom had loans to L1 clubs before they joined us.

Fingers crossed with Smyth, but my point is that potential and proven are different things.

Brannagan while at Fleetwood, was often used as a substitute, and made a grand total of 14 appearances, in a whole season.

You’re right, Marcus Browne was on loan to a League One club - us! Before that, he was with the West Ham U23’s.

You get my point.

We have proven players in his position. if you are looking for a player, at his age, to come into the club and develop, it’s him! Doesn’t matter what standard the Irish league is, you’re not a captain of your club and national team, if you don’t have something about you!

I for one, cannot wait to see him play!

Browne was at Wigan prior to us, though that was in The Championship.

Fingers crossed on Smyth. The reports sound very promising.

And how many times did he play for Wigan? [emoji28] Zero..

Might as well sign me for Man City if that’s all it takes to say you’ve played for a team! Haha.

Gavin whyte has also added the picture of him in training to his insta so I guess he isn’t expecting to be moving anytime soon

That's just to make sure all his suitors know he's doing his pre-season and will be "oven ready" when he makes his move.

Well he did play for them, against Manchester United in the FA Cup, but I take your point.

People seem to be forgetting that Smyth can also play CB, another option and more strength in depth right there.
But 'can play' doesn't mean 'should play'. It's not like this squad is lacking in players who can double up positions, but what we need are specialists who naturally fit into our system, instead of shoehorning players into other positions.

If Smyth becomes a crucial part of our midfield and we lose two CBs, do you really want to move him to the back and disrupt the midfield balance? Ditto with Long and RB/CB, and Brown with CB/LB. If we sign enough defenders in this window, we shouldn't need players to double up in a couple of positions. But that'll come down to whether Karl decides to. If he doesn't, then he hasn't learnt from his mistakes.

I think the most sensible and simple way to build a squad is you have two players for every position in your preferred system. That leaves room for a couple of utility players if you need to tinker or back ups. Then you have your 2 keepers to complete the overall squad. Do that and not overload in certain area's and you probably won't have too many problems.
That has been KR'S downfall the last couple of seasons.
I already said earlier why this is difficult for certain positions. You don't rotate/substitute defenders like you do with wingers and forwards. We just aren't going to have 4 quality L1 CB's. No L1 defender is going to sit on the bench for an entire season which is the most likely scenario for them if they are 4th choice. They'll have offers to go to different clubs and be first choice. If it's a prospect then fair enough, but you have to question whether they would be much better than Golding or Mous anyway?

Really the only position where it doesn't always apply is a fourth CB, but in this day and age with attacking full-backs and 5 substitutes, there's no excuse for not having 2 RBs and 2 LBs in the squad. And we're not talking about wingers who can drop back and 'do a job' there.

This has got to be a wind up!? We signed Brown last week, and KR has already said that we are looking at at least 2 defenders..

Do keep up!!!
Brown is a preferred full back - & KR said nothing on defenders in his latest piece, 4 wingers , holding midfielder& striker.

Its quite straight forward, we need 6 or so players to have a squad of 22 players capable of challeging for the championship, by the end of the week in a perfect world.
Derby understand their predicament and are going forward at a pace to give the new players time to understand one another.
By the sounds of it robinson is aiming at one in possibly by the weekend.

Derby had 5 players!
So they had brought in 3 by Friday making it 8?
I would imagine that they will make a number of signings after the season begins.
In contrast we have what 16 first team players in the building.

I pray to god we have a signing by Friday who didn't play for us last season. The wait is excrutiating.

Findlay looks big and powerful but likely a downgrade on McNally.

As an individual he may be a downgrade but he’s left footed and may actually make us better defensively with more balance. Long, Moore, Findlay with a new defensively sound left back would be an upgrade on last year.

Defensively, here and now, Findlay is an upgrade on McNally.

McNally had more pace, although Findlay is no slouch, and the ability to bring the ball out of defence. And more importantly, he had age and greater potential to develop which significantly increased his value.

We don't always need to have up and coming CB it would be nice to have a nasty bastard that doesn't let much past him

Based on what? He’s a full international and has played many games in the SPL. Findley, as it stands, is an upgrade on Mcnally. I don’t think you’ve actually made a factual comment in the last 2 weeks. The only thing excruciating is your nauseas speculation..

He looks solid, but McNally gives you more going forward and developing play. I have nothing particularly against having a big powerful bastard alongside Moore but it changes the dynamic of our play slightly. Once McNally got settled in last season you could see what a huge talent he was, I'll be mightily impressed in Findlay matches it.

Hard to make factual comments at the moment, speculation is all we have amidst the lack of signings.
