I feel like someone needs to grab our football club and shake it back In to life because from top to bottom we seem to be in abit of a daze ... We need some fire some passion from players to fans we all need to wake up
It doesn't feel like anyone is in charge at the moment. We're just going through the motions and have lost our passion.

It feels like our start to the season has set unrealistic expectations of this team. It's always been a work in progress - at our best we're absolutely capable of making the play-offs, but it's easy to get dizzy about a team in those optimistic late summer days when the sun shines, the pitches are perfect, and all the players are fresh. We've always lacked the real depth to guarantee a challenge and were always susceptible to hitting a rocky patch if we picked up injuries and suspensions and that's how it's panning out - the winter months were always going to be the real test of our promotion mettle and it feels that now we're seeing a realistic portrayal of the team's ceiling, as it stands.

The polar opposites of how we ended last season and started this season made it easy to park KR's shambolic kamikaze job as a distant memory, but the embers of his friendly arson job are still floating around the squad and Manning didn't fan them all out - most rational fans said it would take at least 2 windows to sort this squad into something resembling a promotion contender and that hasn't changed.

There was certainly no lack of effort tonight. It's absolutely crazy to see people trying to write Des off when he's only just arrived and hasn't really had his best team available to him. It's also not his team, and he's come in at a time when performances were just starting to slip as the squad was stretched... We're still in a good position and let's wait and see what he's got up in his sleeve in January. I'm sure the first few games have left him under no illusions about where we need to improve and he deserves to at least be allowed one window to give people an idea of how he wants to shape his team at least!

Finally, kudos to Josh Murphy - delighted to see him start showing the talent we all thought we were getting. Really impressed with not just how sharp he looked but how hard he worked - with a confident striker on the end of his work it may have been a different result.

If you watched that game knowing nothing about the two teams, you could be mistaken for believing it was two teams in a relegation battle. Slow, cagey, lack of invention.

I can't remember the last time I watched a game with such lack of quality by both sides.

McEacrhan is too slow, and Mark Harris... what is he good at...? His positioning is possibly the worst I've seen from a forward player - never where you need him.

Only positives I can think of is Brannagan looked a class above and Murphy simply has to be starting.

Interesting point about the early season form now causing unrealistic expectations.
I looked at the thread and poll I posted before the season about the expectations of the season the majority opinion would be a play off push and spend the majority of the season in and around them.

https://yellowsforum.co.uk/threads/what-is-realistic-progression.9683/page-3

So far we are doing that albeit now having a blip after losing Manning and currently having 6 1st team starters/squad players injured.
We need another window to boost the squad as we have the base of a quality squad but not enough of them.

I felt sorry for Cam. Gave everything
MOTM

Ehhhh, we know we need a striker, no need to keep saying that. If that was Des’s first game we’d probably be cautiously optimistic- hopefully he’s just taking a bit longer to get it together than we expected.

The fans I spoke to at the match / afterwards have been pretty consistent in their views of where we are at.

As far as the game is concerned:-

** Despite missing a few key players (for me RR and Leigh) we should have had enough to beat that poor Reading team.

** Whilst tidy enough McEachran slowed the game too muchh, and Thorniley looks a little off the pace.

** Murphy had theiir full back on toast in the 2nd half. We didn't get the ball too him enough. He was unlucky with that shot late on and you can't blame him for us not winnng last night, there was no one to finish off the chances he created.

** Our best back 4 at present is Stevens - Moore - Brown - Bennett.

** Cam Bran was outstanding, but RR is more suted to that role behind the striker. We mssed RR's cute passes to open things up

As far as more generally:-

** The injuries are killing us - put RR and Leigh in that side last night and we win. Edwards and Browne would also make a huge difference but we can't include them in our thinking, I'm really concerned about how many times they will be available for the remaining part of the season.

** We need a window to continue the rebuild, there should be players we can move on permanently / loan and that needs to happen as we need to increase the quality of our squad depth. That's entirely natural, we've only had one window to sort an almighty mess out.

** We'd be feeling more positive if the dropped points had happened more gradually over the season. The long unbeaten run has helped raise our expectations massively.

** It's far too early to criticise Des. If you want an arm waving / sweary manager then you are never going to like him. I liked the thinking behind his change of formation yesterday, he got it right re the off-side / meaningless sideways passing post match.

Despite trying to look on the positive / put a relaistic spin on things I can't remember leaving a ground so gutted as I felt last night. Reading were terrible, although Sam Smith would have been a good signing for us (never going to happen now). The upcoming games look OK on paper, we really haave got to grind out results until January; I hope the recruitment team have got some early January window signing lined up because we do need to freshen it up.

I thought our fans were decent last night, anyone expecting atmosphere of the 80s / 90s is going to be permanently disapointed from now on as football has changed. We need to continue to back the team because despite a wobble we are still in this. We've put a great run together already ths season, with a couple of new faces and a couple returning from injury there is no reason why we can't do the same again.

'Apathy' the overriding emotion after watching that. From 60 minutes in we were clearly the better team but appeared to lack real belief that we could go and win it. We look like a half decent side desperately low on confidence. Wasn't overly impressed with Josh Mc. Too slow and sideways. Also, the highlights make the Harris half chance from Mills cross look worse than I thought. Id say Taylor c2019 has tucked that away no bother.
Atmosphere a strange one, we were pretty quiet but i think that's got something to do with
1) how we play (slow, possession based short passing with low chance creation and
2) the start to the season.................if we'd won the last 4 and still been 5th after 20 games we'd but absoletely delighted, and there would be a real feel good atmosphere about the club, but the fact we started so well and 'overachieved' has meant that people, me included' seem to be thinking 'oh f**k not again' and waiting for us to slide down the table which is contributing to the nervousness in the stands, which seemed to be the felling last night (and will be same Saturday).

Slow? Cagey? It was frantic, end to end and chaotic for the most part bar a 10/15 minute period in the second half where we were a bit too passive in spells but if you'd rather we continued to play like we did in the first half which was incredibly open and ragged then Des can't win. If we'd carried on like that we'd have lost. We don't have enough goals in that XI to go gung-ho and go behind. In my view we were absolutely right to put our foot on the ball 2nd half and play the game at our pace. Try and win but don't lose.

People are getting all hot and bothered about how little we created despite doing virtually everything else right (in the 2nd half) and having almost all of our creative/goal-scoring players missing. It's like trying to put up a shed without a drill, hammer or screwdriver. Perhaps we should still have won, but to me it's very easy to explain why we may not be at our fluid, free-scoring best right now and sadly that'll make any game more difficult than it looks on paper.

Equally, if the signing of Perkins had come off, as everybody expected,
Nope. As many pointed out when he signed (including me), in his entire senior career he'd had very little experience of senior football. He had come on once for West Ham in the 78th minute of a UEFA cup game and played a couple of times for Leeds - both in cup games, again with one of those being as a sub.

We certainly *hoped* but to say we *expected* is simply not true. We have all seen youngsters from clubs higher up the pyramid who cannot simply turn at at a senior side and make an impact. Unfortunately he looks like he is one of them.

Definitely a work in progress, team in transition feeling at the moment. Des DESperately needs a number 2 in to support him and share ideas and strategies. This is as much a part of the problem as our misfiring playing squad is right now.

Great post, you've absolutely nailed it.

Leigh and Rodrigues were both a big miss last night, and having either Browne or Edwards fit would've made a big difference too.

But even if they had all been fit, we still need a striker and a midfielder at the very least. January is a big month for us, if get that right then there's every chance we can get ourselves back on form.

I listened to the Reading commentary on ifollow and it puts a very different perspective on the game. They were spot on about several things including saying their goal was offside and they were waiting for the flag.
They were amazed at how slow our build up was and how easy it was to defend against.
They remarked how all our forwards were lightweight and one dimensional “their front 5 are small and similar”.
With15 minutes to go we kept the ball at the back and it looked like we’d settled for a point.
The best thing they said was that Oxford have a good 5 a side team and pass it nicely without any goal threat.

Slightly different perspective as my son and I were at the opposite end with my friend who is actually a Coventry fan but Reading are his second team.

The match
His thoughts were we desperately need a striker. He thought Harris just wasn’t anticipating where to be when the excellent crosses came in, unlike Brown who was.He also thought that a good striker would have buried the one chance he had first half where he chose not to have a go with his left foot and the header he should have lifted over the keeper second half.
He also commented on the amount of time we tap it around at the back only to send it forward eventually and lose it
He thought Beadle,Moore,Brown, Brannagan Mc Guane and Murphy were excellent. He also said that when Bennett came on we looked stronger at the back. The rest of the substitutions did nothing. He thought we didn’t want to lose rather than go for the win

I agreed with him on all points

Stadium
My thoughts on the the stadium were that when Reading did have spells when they were on top the rest of the supporters were right behind them. This is something we just don’t get at our place because it’s so open and any noise evaporates. How much better it will be when we get our new home.
Busses
We had to get back to Tilehurst and have to say the transport system is excellent. The busses are all parked in one area and basically you just get back on the same bus that is left there for the match,we could really learn something from this when we move.

One other snippet my sons friend who is a good source of information told him he’s not sure the players are buying into Des Buckingham and they have nicknamed him “The Ghost” because they don’t see him much between matches.
He has been right on a few things before so no reason to disbelieve him.

Your son's friend obviously reads this forum

He might have got that off here though - a suspected Swindon troll with no posting history made that up and posted here that he was nicknamed 'Casper' for an allegedly similar reason. I suspect Chinese Whispers*!

* no, that's not a new player

Do we? I wish someone would bloody say so!
