But doesnt that tell you something if he would be prepared to sign a short term one month ( your words) deal, and virtually cost nothing? Obviously no other clubs prepared to offer him any better .
Does that matter? Apparently no club has enquired about Brannagan this summer, that doesn't mean that no one else wants him?

I
No - I think people are looking at Sinclair's record over many years, with many teams. His best patch was when with us before when he scored 4 in 16. Apart from that he has scored 2 goals in his 71 senior games! Now, I suppose we can be very optimistic and say he will magically regain the form he showed for us three years ago and score a goal every 4 games. Or we can assume he will score at his career average and score once every ten games. Or that he will replicate what he has done in league games over the most recent couple of years and score once in over 40 games!

If we didn't know him and the club was considering signing a striker that no other team was interested in who had those sort of stats at the age of 25, there would be some eyebrows raised! If he were the only striker we could possibly sign then you'd take him - but as I said, I cannot believe that there isn't anyone (young, old, one of our youngsters, loan, permanent, English, Irish, Dutch, Scottish...) who wouldn't be more exciting or more of a goal threat.

If we were chasing a game and saw Sinclair warming up on the sidelines, would you *really* have much confidence that his introduction would turn the game around?
I haven't seen Sinclair in any of the friendlies, but I wouldn't get too hung up on his stats. He's never really got properly started anywhere, having a number of loans, in the reserves, or just not playing. We tried to sign him a couple of years ago and obviously the club still sees him as worthy of a trial.

Ha, yes ok we'll agree to disagree. The Brannagan analogy is some comparison !

Once again, you misrepresent what I have said and use that to make your point. I've not said that Sinclair is the best option from thousands of professional footballers. I haven't even said that he's the best option in a club with only one fit and recognised striker!

The point I will repeat, is that if we bring a striker in this week it is likely to be a young PL prospect. They could be excellent but equally have likely had bit parts in preseason tours and would likely need a little while to get up to full match fitness and sharpness. Not a bad thing, we should look to ease players in. Of course, we may get a Stockton or similar player, but I'd imagine that Morecombe would not let him go without a replacement etc and that all takes time.

So we go into Derby with Taylor and a PL youngster on the books. Would it be so reckless to also have Sinclair on a one month deal? Even a six month deal? He doesn't have to play. He doesn't even need to be registered in September if we have others in. He would cost virtually nothing and he does know the club, the players etc and will be settled.

I honestly can't see how this can be seen as anything other than a low cost, low risk option?

'you're using my words against me'
'you're misrepresenting what I've said'

The usual cries. At least have the balls to back up what you're saying.

Quite simply - you have just stated (I assume of your own volition and without being coerced) - 'I've not said that Sinclair is the best option from thousands of professional footballers'.

If I may be so bold as to assume that you meant it, why then, would you sign him? If we have better options out there, why sign a player that isn't the best option we have?

Why are you so desperate to sign a player who, in your own words, 'doesn't have to play' and 'doesn't even need to be registered'.

I can absolutely see how this would be a low cost option - but firstly we don't necessarily need a low cost option, and secondly - is he the best we can get for that relative low cost?

If you don't think he is - why on earth are you so adamant that we sign him? As predicted, you've talked about the fact that he is in building and cheap. No suggestion that 'actually, with 10 minutes to go and a goal down at Derby, I think he is the sort of player to get a goal out of nothing' or 'when 2-0 up at home to Lincoln he'll come on with 20 to go and hold the ball up well and run the ball into the channels'.

Instead, just 'he is here and he is cheap'.

As I say, low bar.

Done some more reading on Josh Murphy. Appears to be a versatile attacker which helps massively with any balance issues in attack. Also, as well as being able to cover both right and left-wing, sounds like he's played a few games at wing-back as well which could come in handy if we move back to a back-three at some point this season.

Starting to get excited over this one - I just hope it's not over nothing and we get this deal over the line. SURELY he wouldn't have played on Saturday - and possibly alerted some L1 clubs to his availability in the process - if we didn't have something agreed. Right...?

Karl Robinson: “he’s one of the best wingers I’ve worked with. He’s in the best place he has been for a long time. Our board have supported this, financially, which is incredible! Let’s just say, this isn’t a trial”

He might as well have announced it there and then [emoji28]

The point you're missing is that I've not said that we shouldn't look to bring another striker in, in fact I hope we do and do so by Saturday.

However, if that player has not had a full preseason then they are unlikely to be able to make a full contribution immediately. If (God forbid) anything happened to prevent Taylor from playing, we would have the option of playing Browne or Bodin upfront, giving Gatlin O'Donkor a chance, or potentially use Sinclair. None of these are ideal. But I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss having Sinclair as a low wage option until the new signing and Baldock are up to speed.

If we're signing Sinclair just so we're not light in a position, and just to see out the last 15 minutes of a game, and that he's cheap, then we may as well be putting GO'D on the bench.

He's a consistent scorer in the youth teams, and at some point we're going to have to put our faith in some of these kids. Lofthouse, LCP, Adam Smith and lots of other good prospects have ultimately been dumped out because we can't give them opportunities. If we signed Sinclair after the last few years he's had, O'Donker would probably have cause to look elsewhere too.

Obviously the ideal situation is to get a top PL youth loan or striker with recent goalscoring experience at EFL level.

Murphy is a brilliant signing, if that’s confirmed.

Sinclair is a proper donkey, and we would be scraping the barrel signing him. It screams out desperation.

We need, and can do better. I take it Jones has signed…. Not heard on that, and I’m amazed his knee has been ok.

He’s no superstar but he’s likely to be cheap.

Sinclair did well for us 4 years ago. I recall a particularly spirited performance at Walsall. Now it was 4 years ago but our manager does have form in getting old players back.

I reckon he’ll be offered some sort of deal. As Baldock cover.

Reckon we’ll get a Prem youngster in on loan as well, … as indicated by the noisy prison officer.

People talking about signing Sinclair like we haven’t got a pot to P**s in & it’s all we can sign.

We have a top 6 budget. The striker coming in will be of real quality to challenge Taylor whilst Baldock misses the first 2/3 months.

Let’s stop f*****g about and talking about bringing in Sinclair to do a job.

The football club is past that now.

This isn’t OUFC under Lenagan bringing in Josh Parker as a short term fix..

I've posted my views on Robbo and the youth players previously - he's happy to throw them into meaningless trophy games and make a big fuss about his faith in young players but they then seem to disappear before eventually being released. I think they are being 'dumped' because they are deemed not good enough, not because we don't give them opportunities.

Stop it Karl

It would have to be as a fourth choice if budget and squad places allow. Personally wouldn’t have an issue with Sinclair coming in as a punt to start Trophy games and as a secondary option off the bench. He has pedigree and it might turn out well.

What would be a concern would be Taylor, an injured Baldock, Sinclair as the only cover. But there’s been nothing to suggest that would be the case.

I think with Sinclair it's sometimes better the devil you know. He's an unattractive proposition for most clubs but KR knows his character and somewhere in there is/was one of England's most exciting forwards at youth level (he may even have been in the same youth team as Brannagan?). He's unfit, probably lacking confidence and perhaps even lost a little bit of hunger for the game so there is huge room for improvement - but we don't know the circumstances and Watford are not exactly the pinnacle of well-run football clubs and their management of players leaves a lot to be desired. We know KR is very committed to developing players and takes that on with pride - and he's good at it.

My view is if Karl and his team mates believe he is committed to the cause and his attitude is right, he could be a real asset to our squad at an affordable price. We're going to need a couple of 'affordable' options to offset the spend on the likes of Murphy who was on £28k a week at Cardiff. It's obvious to everyone he won't reach his previous heights but if we can restore him to a high level League One striker or dare I say, capable Championship striker, then it's not bad business. He's got better each time he's played in pre season when I've seen him and if he continues that between now and Xmas, he could be key for us in the 2nd half of the season, who knows.
