International News Black Lives Matter

The memorial to Guy Gibson`s dog "Nigga" at RAF Scampton has been replaced.

"Nigga" is now "A Black Labrador Dog Mascot" of Guy Gibson.

A man who fought for the very freedoms we enjoy now has part of his story erased.

Yes "its only a dog" but it is the very erosion of history that will not stop until nobody is offended and we have no history.

Seems valid to me. That was not a kind term to use at the point he named the dog. The name is slightly different than how you've typed it in your post. I'm assuming because if you spelt it correctly, it would be censored by the forum rules. You know, seeing as how its a very offensive term.

Sounds like from your post that they're just removing the name of the dog from the memorial.

Maybe they should have put a gold chain around the dogs neck, a MFB parked nearby and some scantily clad women dancing under a money shower. Would've been ok then ;) :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

I spelt it like that to avoid any liberal type getting offended.
The dogs name, correctly spelt in morse code -. .. --. --. . .-. was also the message that the breach of the Mohne Dam was successful.
The film about the Dambusters was released in 1955 and has since been re-shown several times with a warning at the start that it contains racial terms from the period which some people may find offensive.
In May 2018 an uncut version was shown on the UK channel Film 4 with a warning explaining the film was historical and that some would find it to be racially offensive.
In the 1940`s it was acceptable and the 1940`s and WWII happened, you can`t change that, nor should the "uncomfortable" parts be destined for the scrap heap.
If history is slowly erased how do we improve and learn from it?

Link?

Why is it good exactly?
It's where it should be. to be honest its more fitting than the harbour than where the other one ended. It wasn't commissioned by the council and fly tipped on their property off it goes it's just annoying taxpayers money was needed to dispose of it. We know the artist send him the bill.

Was on the memorial masons page on FB, company called Draper Memorials in Lincolnshire........... it wasn`t going well for them.
They have since deleted the images and the discussion.
So folk have now moved to other posts that can be commented on!

I'm hardly a snowflaky leftie, but it was "only a dog" and one with a name that is universally acknowledged as offensive. If Mother Teresa had a dog called c*nt then that would rightly be frowned upon now without losing the historical relevance of Guy Gibson or Mummy T!

Ah OK, thanks, explains why I couldn't find a story, expected at least a Daily Mail article. They will pick it up before long I guess...

The dog was the squadron mascot, named at the time, but inextricably linked with the Dambusters.
Hardly anyone can name the dam`s, remember the names of those who died, but most can name Barnes Wallis, Guy Gibson and "the dog".
Now I will whole heartedly agree it is now universally acknowledged as offensive but we are 80 years down the line.
It doesn`t mean it "never happened" and equally doesn`t mean it should be repeated now out of context.
however from those small acorns large Oaks grow............. what next?
Things that might offend the Germans based on WW1 or WW2?
Bomber Harris gets a torrid time for Dresden et al.......... wipe them from the history books?
Where will it stop?

Were you this outraged in 2011...

... Or are you just going a bit Gammon (?) about it now?

The story could have been told and celebrated without any reference to the dog (or it's name) and you would lose nothing.

How many historical stories over the last 80 years reference the pets of those involved?

The council made the right call.
They showed quick, decisive action in removing the statue, bringing much needed balance to the situation and for the established process to be followed on what, if anything will replace the stature of Colston.
It would have been very easy for them to bow to the public opinion and that of BLM that led to Colston’s removal and leave the new statue up while the process was followed, thereby hacking off a number of people unnecessarily and risking retaliatory action.

Nope, because that is artistic interpretation, their choice really.
When it comes to films I preferred the original thanks.
The memorial to the dog was tacit and factual and, in its own right, a historical artefact like a statue.

Fly tipped? It was a statue on an empty plinth, not an old fridge dumped by the side of the road. I don’t see the big deal

Two that I can think of....although Greyfriars (sorry Protestants ) Bobby is a bit debatable as to if it actually happened.

And that is what makes the black dog both special and unique.
