Jack Marriott alone not being enough to fill all the shortcomings in the squad shouldn't detract from the fact that it is a decent signing.

If it does come off as seems likely, then three striker options of Harris, who has had a good if not exceptional season at League One level and is likely to improve. Goodwin who again has already done ok at League One level this season and has the potential to be even better. Throw in the experienced Marriott, who is still under 30 and scored plenty of goals at this level and I think it is a very nice blend, the best we have had for some time.

I will caveat that by saying I wouldn't want to be giving Marriott a b long contract on big money.

Marriott on loan with the opportunity of signing him on a perm at the end of the season for a reduced fee would be a great.

As you say, it still leaves too many gaps though. I'll be truly amazed if we end the window without bringing in a winger too - would border on negligence.

Looks like I'm in the minority here but I'm not so hung up on a winger coming in. I think with Leigh now back fit could be given more license to bomb on which would mean we could play Rodrigues off the left with a license to drift inside. That would leave Burey, Goodrham, Bodin, Harris plus potentially Brown.

I think a CDM is pivotal as with a solid base in place we would be much more flexible tactically.

Fit squad as it stands. (*loaned in)

*Cumming, Eastwood, Brearey,
*Stevens, Golding, Negru, Moore, Brown, Thorniley, Leigh, Smyth, McEachran, McGuane, Brannagan, Henry, Rodrigues, Goodrham, Woltman, *Burey, O’Donkor, Harris

Players missing. (*recalled or loaned out)

*Beadle, Long, Bennett, *Findlay, *Seddon, *Johnson, Bodin, Murphy, Browne, *Mills, Edwards, *Perkins, Goodwin

Definitely need a CDM but for some unknown reason Des thinks we don't.

I just don’t see that we can play wing backs without a holding mid. Cam goes forward and we end up with McGuane or McEachran trying to hold the fort. The latter can barely run let alone make a tackle.

I’m hoping that the talk of two forwards reflects a return to 4 at the back. Leigh can still give us width from there, it gives Stevens less to do. Ruben suits a midfield 3 far better than whatever he’s supposed to be doing in the current system. Having the extra man in there means we can potentially get by with McGuane without a specialist coming in (I’d still love to see one).

I wouldn’t mind seeing a front three of Burey-Marriott-Harris on Saturday for example, ahead of Brannagan-McGuane-Rodrigues. Back 5 picks itself more or less.

Des, or Tim?
If it’s Tim does he realise we are not talking about Construction Design and Management, a Cash Deposit Machine or Congnitive Decision Making, but something far more important to the playing squad and yellows forum members, the all illusive CENTRAL DEFENSIVE MIDFIELDER

Knowing our luck, the tumbleweed would do its ACL and be out for 6-9 months.

Far more likely that it roll through the treatment room with the resultant chaos setting Browne, Edwards, Murphy and Bodin back by a combined 217 months.

Our current wing options are: Goodrham (young), Burey (getting up to speed), Murphy (injured), Edwards (injured) and Browne (injured). We were already short coming into January and then we lost Mills. I don’t know how anyone can reflect on the Rovers game comparing the first half without wingers and the second half with, and decide we’re not short on numbers out wide.

Putting Rodrigues out wide means you don’t have him in his natural central position, and Bodin is also currently injured.

We can’t look at it like ‘we have plenty in terms of numbers’, rather ‘how many do we actually have available?’.

Have we had three decent strikers (for their level) in the same squad since Beano-Green-Midson?

I'm sure we have, but struggling to recall one.

MacLean-Constable-Craddock for a time was a great front three.
