And who created the expectations of a near normal Christmas as possible in the first place?
Covid rules still to be relaxed over Christmas in UK
But details are yet to be confirmed on whether advice on household mixing will be toughened.www.bbc.co.uk
That was popularity politics at its worst. Its the kind of thing people voted tory to avoid. They are supposed to be the nasty party who make the tough decisions for the greater good.
Yikes! I've entered a parallel universe. Let me out! That was popularity politics at its worst. Its the kind of thing people voted tory to avoid. They are supposed to be the nasty party who make the tough decisions for the greater good.
Ah, the common sense 'get out of jail free card'. Come up with rubbish policy, then blame it on 'lack of common sense' when people do exactly what you've allowed them to do...Not at all for people with "common sense" like you and I.
If anyone didn't think that 3m people coming back from Northern Italy when that was the European epicentre was the primary reason then there really is no hope. I think even the govt has accepted now that they clusterfuck underestimated itI see that there has finally been some official recognition tonight that not shutting the borders early (or pretty not at all) was a mistake with up to 63% of Covid strains in early 2020 originating from just France and Spain. That’s some backtracking from the bullshit that it would of made no difference, alongside the nonsense about schools not causing any spread of it makes you realise how politicised the “science” coming out was at times.

It's obvious that people push the limits and bend the rules, something the government should already know.FFS do people want individually tailored instructions sent to their house in an accessible format?
It`s "allowed" to drive at 70mph on a motorway.......... if it`s foggy, snowy or icy do you do it? No... you apply "common sense".
Ergo if there is a nasty virus around that might kill granny do you invite all the family around for dinner just because it is "allowed"? No.... you apply "common sense".
You have to wonder that if this news report was from exactly a year ago and not today how different things might be.
BBC News - Covid: £5,000 fine for people going on holiday abroad
Covid: £5,000 fine for people going on holiday abroad
It is due to come into force in England next week as some other lockdown restrictions are eased.www.bbc.co.uk

If people bend the rules after the first lockdown, it's obvious they will do so again after the second one.
People with your attitude are allowing this government to get away with some shockingly poor decisions. Government are there to govern, not to abdicate responsibility when things go wrong.
Edit: Had it been a Labour government making the exact same decisions, you'd have been all over them.
You will know from this forum of not a particularly wide cross section of the community that we hold a wide spectrum of views and disagree greatly on many issues, so why do you think everyone's version of common sense across the UK is sufficiently similar for it to be sensible to rely on said common sense to ensure people do the right thing? They put in place sensible rules to keep the balance and prevent people "just doing it" anyway.
Realistically enforcing the rules across 66 million folk isn`t going to happen, you rely on reward and compliance.
If a minority take the pee they were probably going too anyway!

But that is your version of common sense. There is a world of difference between jumping off a cliff and mixing on Christmas day. Others believe the government wouldn't allow something such as the Christmas meet up if it wasn't safe. This IS common sense in play for many. And the nub is, it doesn't matter how much you say they shouldn't hold this view that fact it they do and its this reality the government have failed to address through its legalisation..By it`s name -common sense.
It is sound and prudent judgment based on a simple perception of the situation.
If you asked most people on here, irrespective of their other views, to jump off a cliff the vast majority would not.
Just because HMG says something is possible it is plainly obvious that each individual or family group assesses their personal risk and acts accordingly.
In our case we remained within our household bubble and only interacted with folk outdoors.
We could have travelled to the South West and had Christmas dinner with the elderly in-laws..... but that would be stupid - the risk to them and us would be too great.
We applied "common sense".

You can`t legislate for stupid.
Back to "common sense".
Family A have 2 kids at school and Mrs A is a key worker in a care home. It would be reckless for them to meet Granny for Christmas dinner as anyone of them could be asymptomatic even if Mrs A is tested. They are sad but understand the risk and apply common sense.
Family B have no kids and both work from home. Granny is in their bubble. It would be safe for them to meet up for Christmas dinner and the legislation allows it. They are happy and have applied common sense.
Family C have 3 kids, 2 step kids (that see the other parent every other weekend) and there several associated Aunt`s & Uncle`s. If they meet their elderly relatives for Christmas dinner it is madness. Sadly Family C are a bit stupid and think "Boris said it`s OK" they don`t assess their risk or apply common sense - Granny & Grandpa are dead now.
ONS "Waves"............... looks like 2 depending on your pragmatism.

If you accept the two wave argument then you can only conclude that the government royally fucked up in their handling of it.
No but you can legislate on the knowledge its out there. You can`t legislate for stupid.
