Other European European Super League one step closer?

I would argue that the reason for the increase is to ensure the larger countries don't get knocked out in qualifying (like Netherlands and Denmark did in 2016) rather than altruistically opening it out to smaller nations.

I think you're probably right.

England will no doubt find a way to get knocked out early anyway

Florentino Perez actually features in today's gossip column too as the Real Madrid president said in the same radio show that clubs will not be able to sign Paris St-Germain striker Kylian Mbappe or Borussia Dortmund forward Erling Braut Haaland without the European Super League. What a beautiful, beautiful statement that is.
I suspect it's true as well.....all the reports suggest that Barcelona in particular are absolutely skint at the moment. And the Spanish/Madrid governments probably have other stuff to spend money on this year rather than subsidising Real.

So the elite talent gets spread around and we actually have genuine European competition between a wide array of clubs? Glorius.

Somewhat sad for Haaland, because he probably won't now earn the GDP of a small nation each year....just a medium sized capital city. But it's hard to feel too sorry for him!

It absolutely does dilute the quality in the early stages, no argument. There's not always a correlation between quality and entertainment though.

I just like seeing the smaller nations, and the potential for upsets etc.
No doubt, but if I'm remembering correctly, the problem with the 2016 Euros was that, in the group stages, because third-placed teams could still qualify if they had a good enough record, there was a built-in incentive for teams to play for draws (rather than in the traditional format, where the top two go through and, since you're not going to be in the top two with three points, you're incentivised to play for the win in at least one game). Made for some pretty dreary fixtures.

cant remember if it a was a world cup or a euros... I vaguely remember Austria Germany in the group stages playing out a dreary draw so Austria qualified to ko stages

World Cup, Spain 1982.

The issue back then was that the last two matches of the group stage weren’t played at the same time. Austria and Germany knew a result that would see both of them through was achievable and they played out a 1-0 win for the Germans so both would advance. Both final group stage games are now played at the same time to prevent such shenanigans.

Algeria still smart about the ‘disgrace of Gijon’ today.

I reckon Man City can afford a pretty decent lawyer to get them out of it, or just drag it out till the super league money runs out, that will happen long before the Abu Dhabi lot notice they have even spent a few quid.

It's going to be interesting if this proves to be true.

Johnson wants to please people all the time and so will say what they want to hear. And of course people will hear what they want to hear. It wouldn't surprise me if he said things like 'that sounds interesting' and 'I can see why you'd want to do that' to Ed Woodward and then when the momentum shifts, he says more widely 'no this can't be allowed to happen' to a bigger national audience.

I still remember him saying at the end of a No.10 C19 briefing session last March when he was desperate to give out good news that we could 'send C19 packing' in 12 weeks. I would love to know what Whitty and Vallance thought of that little nugget.

And that is what politics is! Always leave room to manoeuvre if the wind changes. :)

Usual caveat is that it matters not colour of rosette.

Some credit to Corbyn at least you knew exactly where his principles were, totally unelectable and has sent Labour down a wormhole they may never recover from, but he had principles.
