Transfer News Transfer window 2020/21

Have watched a reasonable amount of McGuane. He has the athleticism of Browne but can take the ball on the half turn like Baptise. With his pace and carrying ability its probably tempting to put him out wide, but as we saw with Browne that causes havoc through the middle. He wont go into a #10 as we are yet to make 4231 work...so you are looking at Brannagan/Gorrin/McGuane...McGuane can also do the defensive stuff so a fair bit of midfield versatility.

Kelly is something pretty different to come into the midfield 3 but his ability on the ball is valuable.

Is he any good? Where would you rank him amongst current/recent past players in terms of total ability/effectiveness at L1 level?

There’s a very controversial post to be made about this being the norm soon due to the gap in salary caps between L1 and the Championship, but I don’t want to upset anybody today. It’s Friday after all ;)
Its a great point because we routinely competed with Championship clubs when it comes to wages. Only last year, we offered Browne more than Middlesbrough did and he signed with us for three years.

Am I the only one who is not massively enthused about Liam Kelly signing?? Was with us for along period of time last year and hardly played. Spoke to an ex colleague of his when he was at Bath City who said he is ability but has no guts and not physical or quick enough for league one or two! Have to agree that he looked slow when he came on in any games.

He scored 6 in 16 for Bath from midfield. He was only 20 then too. He was never fit for us until the final when he showed what he could do. I think he'll be rotated too. There'll be games away from home where it might be best he doesn't play, but for games where we dominate possession (like we did v Wycombe) he will be very useful.

His performance in that one half of the play off final convinced me we should sign him and we’ve needed a dead ball specialist for a while now

definitely disagree with him not being physical, he battered a few Newcastle midfielders with some excellent tackles. Also i’m really glad we now have an out and out set piece taker in the squad too. On the pace thing, Gorrin isn’t the quickest either. If he can get himself 100% fit then thats the main thing.

He was only just 20 when at Bath and since then has played in the Championship. When playing last season he looked to physically dominate and control the game. He may not be quick, but that's not his game.

So yes, you may well be the only one not massively enthused.

You won’t find many better midfielders in the league then a fit Liam Kelly you could deploy him as a 6,8 or a 10 in the midfield. Have to remember when he signed in January he played 2(?) games all season and was fighting to get fit.

I hope I stand corrected then! Lol

The deal for Kelly has been in the making since the playoff final, and only completed yesterday. So I expect an announcement tonight, but the deal for McGuane (if it is him) was only being put together yesterday so suspect that may not be announced until back at the training ground.

We're also looking at one more permanent (O'Neil?) and have someone lined up should Dickie leave. Suspect we'll also look at a couple of forward/wide players, probably on loan. A decision will then be made about who, if anyone, goes out on loan.

Based on all that then, are the two mystery players triallists?

A fully fit kelly could keep Gorrin out of the team. Plus his free kicks are what we have been missing for years.

We don’t want to sign permanent deals for players we can then sell for millions in some cases, and get sell-on clauses which could be worth many hundreds of thousands more, when we can just loan a limited amount of players because they’re now easier than ever to be hoarded by those higher up. Why offer good wages for Roofe, Lundstram, Brannagan and others, when you can have your budget slashed and just get some rather than all of them for a single season, before they disappear back to their parents clubs without making you a penny in sales?

That deal you offered Marcus Browne that you nearly got him to sign before Middlesbrough rocked up at the 11th hour? Well, you won’t even be able to offer him that deal he was close to signing in the first place now - you can’t afford the wages you were willing to pay him by law. And now Middlesbrough won’t even have to pay other players what they’ve been paying him to usurp you. You can only offer a player £1500 a week max, so now they only need to pay them £3000 a week to double your offer and vacuum up the asset. Previously they were having to offer double that to snatch them off you, because you yourself could offer that £3000 a week, which also meant they were more selective. So while they might have blocked you off on a Browne, they weren’t so sure on those Roofe’s and Lundstram’s and Brannagan’s that you were able to get over the line before. Now, however, they’re available for half the salary and therefore they’re cheap punts, which means the frequency with which they block you off goes up because they have to spend less than ever to blow your offer out of the water, meaning they’ve saved money on a deal that stops you being able to own your own assets. Thus making it harder for you to actually own anybody of value that hasn’t come from your own academy or some dimly lit backwater, and therefore keeping you as pinned back and restricted as possible.

But then you know all that, you’re just being silly ;)

Enjoy the transfer thread - there’s movement afoot! There will be plenty of time on the correct channels for simple, common sense economics to be broken down and explained repeatedly. I’m even considering getting some hand puppets to help!

Yes, he is a quarterback type midfielder and offers something different to Gorrin.
