International News Americans with guns ....

Welcome back from holidays! What crap is this ? Do you have or need a handgun to protect your home …?
If you have one at home in the UK you’re a spook James Bond or a criminal.

I was at DSEI last year and the guy at one of the hand gun stands told me that they sell 27000 handguns to the us each MONTH for domestic use. That’s more than the rest of the worlds military and security forces put together.

And that’s just one handgun manufacturer…….

"The people have a right to bear arms for the defense of themselves and their own state, or the United States, or the purpose of killing game; and no law shall be passed for disarming the people or any of them, unless for crimes committed .."

Again the overwhelming majority apply that right correctly and properly but some do not.

Why punish the majority for the actions of a criminal minority?
Do you generally believe that?

The problem with you having a gun to protect your home is that any would be intruder would the bring a gun to the house. It’s the dumbest of atms races.

Gun control or no gun control this kid was going to kill people. Wether it’s 1 person or 20 seems irrelevant to me. They will save more lives by improving mental health services.

You are not being serious?
Whether he killed 1 or 20 is irrelevant?
So reducing deaths in the US by 95% is irrelevant?

Really?

Whether it's one family destroyed or twenty families destroyed means nothing?

I agree that more should be spent improving mental health services.

What I mean is killing 1 is just as bad as killing 20. It would be great to reduce the numbers but it does not solve the problem one bit.

With a knife this kid would have taken out quite a lot right? There nothing stopping him putting a home made bomb in a classroom is there? Why not focus on solving the reasons why he wanted to do it?

I appreciate this thread is about gun control but I’m not interested in that debate, that’s for the Americans to argue over as it’s just preposterous that they let people buy any kind of gun.

Everyone is focused on saving school kids from mass shootings and ultimately themselves. Well there was one school kid that needed saving too and then this would never have happened.

I`m talking about America, that country where you can shoot burglars. This is not a bad thing.

Having had an attempted burglary at home I had grabbed a steak knife from my butchery kit and, had the burglar made it through the patio doors they would have been stuck with it.
I think me throwing the curtains open, stark naked holding said knife shouting "get the f*** away" might well have ended his burglary career.

Surprised he didn't sue you for the ongoing effects of PTSD.....horrifying :ROFLMAO:

Love the way people talk easily about having a gun to protect themselves and their family. Wonder how many people on here have shot a gun in anger, and either injured or killed somebody. I love the bravado shown.
I can’t understand how you can buy a gun anywhere in the world when the following simple rules are not in place

1. No basic mental assessment.
2. No background checks.
3. No training in using and storing a weapon.
4. No regular follow up checks.

A gun is something that when used as designed has a single purpose. To kill. In the US you need more checks to drive a car.

I don't agree with much of this!

Killing 1 person is, of course, terrible. But for the amount of distress for families and fear it creates then killing 20 is of course worse. About 20 times worse.

Has there *ever* been an incident of someone walking into a school and killing 20 people with a knife? I suspect not. I am not particularly brave, but I think I'd have a better chance of surviving a knife attack than someone shooting at me from distance with a firearm!

I don't know the mental state of the kid who did it - and it is undoubtedly true that the best way of solving such things is to have such a robust mental health regime that no teenager is ever confused, upset and angry. But in the real world that isn't going to happen. I think *all* teenagers feel like that at times - the difference is that most of them (even those at the extremes) don't have access to a lethal weapon.

Can we tell the Americans what to do with their gun laws? Of course not. But that doesn't mean that it isn't a topic worth discussing.

You don`t have to be angry to shoot a gun, and you don`t shoot at people unless it is your job.
Here in the UK, we have those simple rules, and more, and suffer far fewer firearms problems.
America does not and, as such, endures the consequences through their own choice that a historical "right" is more important than sensible regulation.

The idea that this kid would have killed anyway is almost certainly wrong. He managed to buy two assault rifles and large quantities of ammunition. He could have easily bought a bulletproof vest and helmet too if he was hoping to survive long enough to kill many more.

The reality is that this was almost certainly a suicide by cops scenario when a mentally unwell young man felt that he had nothing left to live for. Sadly that's how many people feel every day. But without guns, the ability to take their own lives are less instantaneous and that stops many suicides by giving people time to see a different way out.

This kid got his 5 minutes of fame and immortalised himself in death in a way that he couldn't when he was alive. This also says a lot about hoe the media, Netflix etc portray killers, but that's another issue.

The reality is that without the attack on the school, the perpetrator would almost certainly have shot his himself. Without guns, none of this would have happened and he'd probably be getting help for his mental health.

Guns are the issue.

From Newsthump:

BREAKING! “We don’t have a gun problem, we have a mental health problem” insists only nation on Earth that feeds the impressionable minds of its children with active shooter drills before it teaches them how to ride a bike.

It would be dumb to turn up to a gun fight with a knife. Or nothing. The discussion here is about a mass murderer who attacked a school, not a sensible home owner in a country where everyone is packing.
