Ex Player Alex Rodriguez Gorrin

He does seem to have found the right place for himself ( position and club) I guess we would be looking to recoup whatever transfer fee we paid for him . Clare, Cooper , Winnall we really didn't have a successful summer recruitment did we !

I would think the biggest driver would be the player himself, who will have felt pretty put out by his treatment here, yet loved up in Derbyshire, so is likely to have a strong preference for staying up there, which Robbo might go along with, not least to avoid the issue of how to slot him into the side here without losing face....
If they can pay us at least what we paid for him then fine. If not then he can come back and do it here, I think footballers are used to changing clubs, plus maybe KR said to him ‘go out there, get games then if you do well you’ll be in the team next season’...

I found out listening to some quiz program that Burton's in Staffordshire. Surprised me, I'll say. Or do you just think people in Derbyshire are easy to please?

I very much Clare will be back, for either of the reasons you say.

He has been playing in Central midfield at Burton. Maybe that is his best position .
I guess that if we have Gorrin and Brannagan here next season, is Clare good enough to be the third player in a midfield 3?
He would need to be better than Henry/ Sykes in that position?

We were unfortunate with Cooper and Mcguane, Winnall was our fault and Clare could have gone either way, though expecting him to be a right back was clearly a mistake

Well you need six or seven players for that area really, to handle injuries and substitutions.

Yes not blaming anyone just all four big signings didnt work out . Add Mous career finishing injury , Henry and Eastys loss of form , Cam Brans dreadful infection and we still have a chance of the play offs ....I say give Robbo an extension 😉

I think there are a few reasons our current recruitmnt model contributes to our abysmal starts to the season. See the following:

First up is the "next big thing player". By this I mean a promising player but we suddenly think he will be the next big thing if only we play him in a different position. I can't help thinking we should concentrate on getting round pegs for round holes as we seem to spend half the start of the season pointlessly trying to hammer square pegs into round holes.

Next up is the "loan star of tomorrow." You know that loaned youngster from the leagues above. The problem is they often take time getting up to speed with this league and competitive football , then are sometimes really inconsistent.

Then there is the "great but broken player". Another popular contender in our recruitment is that player who used to be awesome but has been recently seriously crocked. We then spend half the season attempting to heal the afflicted in hope of a miracle. this again contributes to the slow start.

Lastly there is the "big name chase". We seem to spend a lot of time shooting for the stars in terms of that brilliant player leaving it late in the day to bring in the 2nd or 3 rd choices. Again contributing to a slow start.

I am not saying we should not go chasing players in the above categories as when it comes off we end up with a plyer we otherwise could not afford. However I can't help but think a few more solid permanent signings would allow for us to start better and bring these more experimental players in more gradually.

I think that we have done pretty well on the loan players.
Roofe, Baldock, Browne, Maguane and even Barker, Cadden
Some were not yet ready ( Tyler Roberts as an example under MAPP) and some just weren't good enough (Smith from Reading)
Lincoln have done really well from loaned this season and teams that do well seem to often have good loanees.
It can be a little hit and miss, but a really good loanee can make a big difference

Even Roofe took a while to get going "Can't believe he's a professional footballer" was one quote from one of the more vocal forum users after his first match IIRC. Baldock hit the ground running, McGuane had plenty of pelters until he started showing what he was made of. Barker is getting there gradually but it's all fur coat and no knickers with him, still. Second half vs Lincoln was typical.

So I do agree with the OP on loan players, they very seldom hit hard immediately (apart from Gino van Kessel!)

If only he had played in centre midfield for most of his career before signing for us. How were we supposed to know he isn’t a right back?
A lot on here suggested that he was a right winger!
He played as a right back at Hearts and did well.
“There have been a few questions and raised eyebrows but most of my friends and family understand football,” said Clare, speaking exclusively to the Evening News.
“You do what you can to help the team. I feel my performances have changed a few people’s minds on whether I can play right-back or not.

Its going to be an interesting pre season we certainly need so better recruitment .Hanson even though he gives 100 per cent as got to be loaned out. Winall the same it just hasnt worked out for us and him.Id like to see Forde stay good utility player. Henry 50/50 for me if we want to push on he's not had a good enough season. I love Barker but he will be on 9/10 grand a week at Rangers he's getting better and better. Him and McGuane would be lovely. Alot to look forward to but not quite enough this year.

I reckon there's a decent chance we'll cut our losses with Winnall and offer mutual termination. I think Henry's looked much improved in these last couple of games, if that continues he has to be a must-stay, not only because of that but also because of the experience that goes with it.

The front 3.

I hope we get Barker permanently.
Barker & Joel Cooper competing on the left wing.

Then with Shodipo back to QPR we will need a new right winger. I hope we’d make a bid to sign Gavin Whyte back as I doubt Hull will want him if promoted.

Taylor/Winnall/Aygei is a good set of strikers.

I hope we don't. He had a chance to join us in January and chose Hull instead. With so many other options out there there's little point in trying to chase a player who A) left us after only one season, and B) turned down rejoining the club a few windows later.

I certainly wouldnt hold any grudges if he decided to give us another ‘whirl’..

Thoughts on next year contracts?
Extend:
Ruffles
Sykes (still think there is a good player there)
Gorrin

Release:
Hall
Henry (been a great player)
Mous (coaching role)
Winall (or list)
Hanson (list)
Eastwood
Sean Clare (list)

undecided:
Forde

loans:
Try and sign Mcguane, Lee and maybe shodipo, none of the others
You would seriously keep Sykes but let Henry go ???

Release one of the best players we have had at this club for a long time but keep an arrogant player who can't control himself and has offered very little all season - wow
