Ex Player Alex Rodriguez Gorrin

Makes you wonder what he did in Holland all those months if he is having another pre-season!

The whole sending him and Sykes out on loan is a really interesting one. I wonder whether Robinson has very defined thoughts on when players should go on loan and are not ready. Baldock was probably the best right back we have had since the the 90s and I could never understand why they didn't recall him at MK Dons when he was in charge.

I think he recognises who needs game time to develop and those who are OK on the bench and playing U-23s. Some need more of a challenge.

There was a chance that, had we not had a few injuries in September, Sykes would have been on the bench for a considerable time before getting his chance in the first team. We didn't sign another midfielder, we didn't let him go, he has had the game time and has really come on.

Same with Agyei. If we had signed a striker in Jan, he would be less likely to get minutes and so would have slowed his progress so sending him on loan would have given him a greater chance to come back in the summer and have an impact. Hopefully, he will get his chance to really blossom.

I thought they did in the promotion season?

They did, which is why we ended the promotion season with Kenny at right back.

What doesn’t get talked about often is that when Baldock first joined us the season before the promotion - in season 14/15 when he was on loan for the latter stages after Riley left - he joined as a utility player who spent a lot of time as a holding midfielder or on the bench. Baldock said so himself in interviews, that he’d mainly been used as a midfielder, and you can still see this in the original website story from when he joined in Feb 2015. He’s described as a right back who can also play holding midfield. It was Appleton who played him exclusively as a right back week in, week out across two separate loan spells. Turns out he was not only a lot better as a wingback than he was anything else, but that he was actually on his way to being Premier League standard.

And he was GORGEOUS.

I remember when he scored that great goal just before he left - when your young, handsome right back starts dribbling past players for fun and scoring great goals you think ‘oh no, he’s not going to be with us for much longer... ?’

Looked really sharp tonight and put in a hell of a shift closing players down, chasing back in to his own half, and doing it even more effectively than Mackie as he didn’t give away constant free kicks! Looks back to full fitness now and possibly even fitter than before his injury. Sign him on!
