National News Official 2019 General Election Thread

If you think The people on a Question Time audience are an accurate reflection of the opinions of the people in the area no wonder you’re so poorly informed about the views in the country and think everyone shares your opinion.

But if you look at the figure shown by @BristolOx yesterday, the voting intentions of those in the North are equally split between Labour and the Tories. Tories also have a lead over Labour when it comes to blue collar workers. These groups were both nailed on Labour voters in the past, so something is going wrong. But I guess it's easier to shout others down rather than accept the uncomfortable truth that Labour under Corbyn are simply unelectable.

We’ll see -that’s why we’re having an election- given the extent the press is stacked up against Labour, the scale of the financial difference and the dirty tricks the Tories are playing it would be a miracle if Labour got a result , but at least Labour has exciting policies and a belief in the future.

It’s clear that the old definitions of Blue and white collar don’t make much sense these days. Is a call centre worker blue or white collar? What about a retired plumber who owns a couple of houses, or a bloke who earns 80 k and thinks he’s poor?

Not correct. BBC carefully select the audience by sending a questionnaire of political views/age in advance to QT audience applicants. I've been in the audience before in London and what a motley bunch they were ( as should be the case.). They have a duty to reflect local voting patterns.

Interesting not so in the R4 programme Any Questions where anyone can rock up.

I also thought the Bolton audience reaction was interesting. They were totally unimpressed with the magic money forest approach. Burgon was getting hammered.

You know that all sounds like excuses? Labour can have as many exciting policies as they want, but no one believes in them, and in particular, Corbyn to carry them through.

Johnson is an absolute buffoon, and it's not difficult to find dozens of examples of him bluffing, blagging and bullshitting his way through every political discussion, but still in pretty much every demographic that you care to look at, he is head and shoulders above Corbyn.

And don't whine about the mainstream media. It is at an all time low for influencing opinion. Twitter, Facebook and social media platforms are where most people get their information, and there are plenty of high profile sources that are really driving the Labour agenda. But the voters aren't buying it.

Talk of the NHS being privatised comes up every election, and nothing changes. Of course some services are outsourced, but this happened under Labour as much as the Tories. But fundamentally, the core function of the NHS has remained, and will do no matter who is elected.

Brexit. Every political party bar one has a clear policy. The Lib Dems are throwing everything behind remain and will likely more than double their MP's as a result. Tories are united behind leaving, and have lost some experienced MP's as a result, but will likely win a number of other seats. Labour is sitting on the fence, but can't even do that with conviction.

The economy. Regardless of costing the manifesto or not, the vast majority of people simply do not trust Labour with the economy. Austerity has crippled the country and we have to start spending and investing again. But yet again, polls indicate that people would rather trust the Tories to fix what they broke in the first place rather than let Corbyn loose with the national purse.

So, by all means, bleat away at how everything is so unfair, but Labour are on course for their worst results in decades at a time when they should be strolling into power - and the problem is entirely of their own making.

I would add that Corbyn (too extreme to be electable) is at least a man who believes in definable principles, whereas Johnson is a flip-flopping liar who comes across as a bumbling fool who lacks any semblance of statesmanship and would sell several members of his family to hang on to power.

That's about the only good thing you can say about Corbyn. That manifesto has just increased the Tory majority on Dec 12th. As far as Johnson is concerned well I repeat that on the stump he is regarded as very much Marmite man. Yes, a flawed character to many but he certainly demonstrated statesmanship in getting his Brexit deal agreed with the EU

It’s not been getting a deal agreed with the EU that’s the problem though is it, May did that, it’s been getting it through parliament and he achieved the same as May in that regard.

Glad to see Johnson and Farage have such contempt for the future of the country. -and the planet.

Rich men to whom life has been very kind are destroying the future for their children and grandchildren

You think Boris Johnson shows statesmanship! He’s the Nick Merry of politics. Except of the two Merry is slightly more trustworthy, and more competent.

... at a time when the EU were desperate to get a deal agreed that had a decent chance of being supported by the British parliament. Don't think it was due to Boris' statesmanship. Noel Edmonds dressed as Mr Blobby would probably have had his hand shaken by the Eurocrats.
Er the deal was renegotiated. All previous informed opinion was that Boris had no chance of getting a deal agreed. He did. You have a short memory.

I`ll go with this as the post of the thread.

Nobody trusts politicians but our society deems we need them.
Labour would be cake-walking this with a Blairite style leader but they`ve chosen Corbyn for whatever reason.
Even in a Labour heartland the Asian vote are looking at deserting in their droves because they have parachuted in an Islington councillor as a candidate to replace Vaz.
From the local rag...........................
"Former Labour city councillor Sundip Meghani issued a statement shortly after Councillor Webbe’s selection was confirmed.
He said he could not stay silent on "the obvious dodgy practices and nepotism involved in this process" with the party executive choosing one of its own to stand."

Its those sort of choices that are alienating swathes of their core vote, all driven by the Islington Sect of Corbynista`s.

Johnson was prevented from adhering to his deadline by a strongly Remain Parliament not wanting to honour the votes of the largest democratic mandate ever seen in the UK. Let’s see what happens on 12th December, I suspect it won’t be a strongly Remain Parliament the following week.

Not the“ largest democratic mandate seen in the U.K.“ so if that’s on your handout I’d cross it out.

The leave campaign won a narrow majority with no clear vision of what “leave” meant. “Leave” is now defined as including a number of things that were specifically excluded by prominent leave supporters , like leaving the single market.

When is the conservative manifesto expected to be out? Can't find any clear answers

Presumably(?) were waiting for the Labour document before committing to yet more banana skin, on the hoof, ill thought out ( and probably) uncosted policies.

Don`t panic sweet cheeks, when Jeremy gets in you can have the preferred referendum where the options will be;
A:Remain (Comrade Corbyns Deal)
B:Remain.

Might win that one.

I`m sure you will now run off to "find a tweet" to belittle that............ or work on your simmering anger, the latter would be more beneficial to you. ?

You’re not very good at this debating lark are you, “sweet cheeks.”

Corbyn is going to present the best negotiated deal for the country-as opposed to the crooks disaster capitalists and the DUP who backed Leave and Destroy he’d then going to offer that to the whole country in a referendum.

Don’t know why you call him “ Comrade Corbyn”. Johnson’s the one who is taking large sums from a former KGB agent.

Assuming your reason for posting all these tweets is to try and convince people of your cause, I really dont think you are doing yourself any favours. Frankly they are just quite irritating and often suspect. They are done by highly bias individuals (in many occasions probably by the momentum social media staff), and often ignore nuance or are simply not true (I'm not referring to this one in particular, which may or may not be true). Do you ever fact check these before resharing them?

Before you get defensive I would say exactly the same to someone sharing constant pro Tory tweets.

Why do people keep posting Tweets like it is some sort of nailed on fact?
Surely if you participate in such you will only follow those of the same mindset?
You therefore get fed stuff you think is "right" which just fuels your own insecurity.

That's how media works. It's why, for example, almost all the news and TV media are owned by foreign or offshore companies / people whose goal is to extract as much money from us as possible. And the BBC is so cowed by the threat of more cuts that it has only no appetite to criticise the Tories.

I`m not the one scrabbling around finding twits/tweets that "support my blinkered utopian view".
Read back...... you started with the personal bits, sweet cheeks. ?

End of the day my "X" on a ballot paper is of exactly the same value as yours. That is how democracy works.................... unless you lose.
