Couple of reasons for this. Beadle has the option to go long, but he also has a couple of options passing to defenders (the other CB and the RB). Having an attacker closing you down also means it's one less player man marking one of your defenders, leaving them free to receive the pass. To combat playing out short you need a high press, which then brings out the space as the opposition have to play higher up the pitch.

Sounds trendy. Too risky for me but let's focus on the win.

Just got back. One of those weird games where everyone played quite well, but nobody was outstanding. Some decent interlinked play, but I wish we'd shoot rather than always playing the extra pass. Something to build on though. Oh, and for the haterz, Long was decent, I thought.

Very important win. Is that Negrus second League One start and second clean sheet? He is a rock! Very imposing, strong, quick and seems to read the game well.

Overall not the slickest performance but we definitely got better as the game went on. We seemed to get in lots of good positions and consistently made the wrong choice. I agreed with RadOx commentary that they were trying to score the perfect goal when we had so many opportunities to test the keeper instead.

I suppose that's a good sign though and something we can work on when they watch that footage back.

I still think the fullbacks really restrict us going forward especially when we're trying to break them down, we look good on the break in transition but struggle when they have 9-10 men behind the ball. 2 new fullbacks would really transform us.

Good to see McEachran play the full 90+8, Rodrigues oozes quality but is easily marked out the game in that formation, Bodin drifting in from the left side freed up space in the first half that worked for a period until they cottoned onto it.

Harris is a tough one, I really like his movement off the ball but it wasn't his day on it. Clever finish for the goal though and that will do him a world of good and boost the confidence. I do wonder if he'd be better off the right hand side if we get another forward in, his pace his electric.

Mills another with so much potential, love his confidence to run at defences.

There's potential in this entire side but it definitely needs, for me, a couple of full backs and a centre forward.

I'd also like to see a defensive midfielder to sit deep, we can then allow Brannagan, Rodrigues, McEachran, Bodin etc to play with more freedom and join the attacks.

Important win but Derby will be tough.

Mark Harris sounds like Dean Saunders.

Hopefully he can play as well as his fellow native from Swansea - and his punditry and summary of the game are already better than Saunders!

(As I type this, Jerome just said exactly the same. Spooky!)

My random thoughts on the game (apologies if this has already all been said:

I know Negru is only 21 and has played all of four professional games in his life - but I think he might just be our best defender already. Big, strong and seems to just naturally understand defensive positioning. I think McNally got into the side because of an injury and then never gave up his place - could see Negru doing the same.

Beadle's distribution is outstanding. One of his drilled balls forward in the first half was something Messi would have been proud of. We'll get a better idea about how the rest of his keeping is (and whether the Cambridge error was an aberration) when we play someone more dangerous than Carlisle.

I'm in the "We should loan out GOD" camp, but I can see the logic for keeping him solely to come on at 90 minutes and kill games we're winning!

Marcus Browne is big, strong, quick, athletic, constantly causes opposition defenses problems......and I'm not sure that I would have him in our starting XI. Constantly found his way into dangerous positions, and never once made the right decision and/or executed the final ball. And it's a recurring issue. Goodrham may not have his physical skills, but he offers more end product.

Mark Harris is quick and his movement is great, but for 75 minutes he looked like a deer in headlights every time he got the ball. Honestly don't know if the finish for his goal was genius or he shanked it and got lucky......but either way hopefully it gives him some confidence, because that looks to be what he's lacking.

Overall, Carlisle were very poor and I would almost guarantee that they'll finish the season in the bottom third of the table. We did just enough to win a crucial three points, and to be fair never really looked trouble. But if we have any aspirations of being involved in the playoff discussion, we've got to get masively better in the final third.

Still need a proper striker and a winger to attack more defence is solid enough for clean sheets

All sounds so simple doesn't it, until you come unstuck and look a right plank

Weird seeing the negativity on here.

OK, so we were utter shite for the first 20 minutes, but we took over after that. Second half we were toying with them at times. (When we should have been putting the ball in the net!)

Did Beadle even touch the ball with his hands?

Off the back of the last two games I'll take that performance all day long.
