Sport T20 World Cup

Worry is that history is repeating thirty years on:

1) The 1992 World Cup was held in Australia,
2) The hosts disappointed and failed to reach the semis
3) New Zealand were the best team in the Group Stages, but then got mullered by Pakistan in the semis
4) Pakistan only qualified for the semis themselves thanks to a miracle completely beyond their control (in '92, it was the rain coming down after they'd been bowled out by England for 74, with England 24/1 in reply......this year it was the Dutch beating South Africa)
5) So Pakistan face England in the final at the MCG........
I hated that final. 4 of us stayed up in a hall of residence common room in Manchester. As we started losing around dawn more and more Pakistani students came and joined us. By the end the 4 of us were surrounded by 100 students chanting “Pakistan!” at full volume. Depressing!

They don't seem optimistic. Hopefully the game can be completed tomorrow even if it is 10 overs a side
I appreciate there are all sorts of ticketing issues but the ICC has been well aware of the weather in Melbourne and there is an indoor stadium that hosts BBL games about a mile away from the MCG. I saw a Big Bash game there around the last Ashes tour - surely better than nothing?

reckon we'll put '92 'right' on Sunday

When we won the World T20 final on 16 May 2010 (the same day we beat York City in the Conference play-off final at Wembley), we had beaten Sri Lanka in the semis off the last ball of the 16th over, just like we beat India in the semis off the last ball of the 16th over this time. Hopefully history will repeat itself just 12 years on.

We also lost the T20 final vs West Indies the same day we lost to Barnsley at Wembley in the JPT final. Funny how our 2 appearances there in the 30 years after the Milk Cup both coincided with England getting to the T20 world cup final.

Just hope the rain stays away tomorrow. C'mon England.

Decent start with England keeping Pakistan down to 90-4 from the first 13 overs. Hopefully the pressure of needing to set a target will see them lose further wickets and anything below 160 should be getable.

Pakistan 131-7 with an over to go. Fantastic bowling unit from England so far.

Not giving early wickets away will be vital. Pakistan have a very good bowling attack but will know that they haven't got too many runs to play with if Butler and Hales get in.

You only know a good score once both teams have batted on it.

You have to respect the Pakistan bowling. If they are to win this, they’ll be entirely relying on them to do it.

Why is it always so nervy watching England play cricket... 2 down, Stokes and Buttler at the crease.

To be fair the semi was a cakewalk. This a lot less so, Pakistans bowling is much better than India’s though.

Buttler is massive now.
