FYI due to bridge at Nuneham, no trains are running between Didcot and Oxford.
For GWR trains, some services are cancelled.
There are some bus replacements.
Also for Cross Country trains some bus replacements.
Alternative route via Marylebone.
Note this may affect your train journey Oxford to Stroud (Forest Green) if not fixed by then.

From Bristol it would be a bit excessive to go all the way into London and then back out again.
I've never used the Marylebone to Oxford (or Oxford Parkway) route, but it takes over an hour - I think it used to run a bit quicker.

Thanks for all the ideas! Am now getting a lift, staying in oxford overnight and heading back on Saturday either via the replacement bus to didcot or lift to didcot.

Get the X2 which goes from Oxford to Didcot which stops at Didcot Parkway.
