In the 90s that was 12-16km with less walking and more sprinting. Those figures are only going one way. In the recent womens world cup they were outperforming the 70's men for distance and sprint %. They are performing at peaks where recovery time is longer.
in the 70s players would go to the pub for a few pints after a game too ;)

but yep, fair comment @OUFCGav .... though top flight squads are considerably larger (in numbers) than in the 70s , theres more available players who can be called on to play these days
