Manager/Coach Des Buckingham

I know you don’t grasp lower league football considering you are a massive armchair Man United fan but even by your standards Baldy you are making yourself sound more stupid by each post.

I see you chose to ignore the post about the facts of XG which shows we were over performing, this was also highlighted on the football league highlight show at the time.

It is fanciful if you thought we would keep up the form of 8 wins out of 10 all season.

XG !!!!!! I don’t need XG to tell me what I’m seeing. Forget your XG for a minute, you tell me if I’m being wildly reckless in my thinking to suggest we should have seen off both Northampton and Orient last week and won both the Reading fixtures. Forget 8 out of 10, I’m pinpointing four fixtures where we had the games in the palm of our hand but chose to revert to an ultra defensive and pedestrian mindset that has ended up costing us an automatic position and very likely a play off place too.

You’ve been watching too much Sky and have got to entangled in stats. Are you not capable of watching a match and forming an opinion of what you’re seeing without flicking to your phone to see what the match stats annd XG are ? God help your Mrs, I bet when the moment comes it’s ’hold on darling, let me just have a quick look on my phone, you should have your right leg there, your left arm there …..’

A fan bamboozled by stats to try and reverse the blindingly obvious.

The most random comparison ever there, between XG and sex, Dick just went full Baldy.

I think Malcom Crosby was only ever a caretaker manager.

What the raw stats don't show however is the nuance of the jobs some of these people did. Brian Horton, for instance, was in charge just after Mark Lawrenson left the club and during the period when Maxwell fell off his boat - the club were in severe money problems at the time, yet he still managed to keep us in what is now The Championship year after year with a side playing some bloody good (if inconsistent) football. Maurice Evans was our manager during our stay in the top flight - keeping us up twice and winning a major trophy is up there with anything any Oxford manager has managed to achieve. We would have qualified for Europe if English clubs hadn't been banned at the time.

Ian Greaves also did an amazing job in turning us around in the time he was here before leaving, luckily for us at the time Jim Smith came in and took us to even greater heights.

There are similarities between Greaves’ tenure and Mannings. Shame about the successor this time though.. 😞

Crosby was appointed as a permanent manager I believe, but after a crap start jumped at the chance to rejoin Denis Smith, apologies if my understanding is wrong

That sounds about right, think he came back as part of Wilders coaching team for a while? Might even have been able to eat a sandwich on front of him.

If that is the case it completely slipped my memory, good knowledge.

That’s absolute garbage, whatever the level you still need to be able to manage and win football matches, he’s been a success wherever he’s been whether that’s at Morrells Oxford Sunday league, conference South, Indian premier or English Premiership, although different levels still needs expertise coaching/managing experience, he is part of the City coaching network, I wouldn’t say that’s Mickey Mouse, would you Smith????
Of course it’s Mickey Mouse - he’s been very successful and got highly experienced at flipping burgers.

So suddenly he is way out of his depth as he has shown.

19 games in and Des has had a week to work on his style ,looking forward to the result Saturday .

Yes but the point is we were good enough to be 2nd under Manning and then weren’t god enough under a much less competent experienced manager.
Listen to the Dubs just before Manning's departure you can hear Elek being worried about the statistics showing we werent actually good enough to be 2nd back then

What playing the best team in the league away? What result would be OK in your view?

We did draw one all with them at home not long back so I don’t think we need to completely concede the result with a stronger squad.

I like us to be competitive, have a good shape and a coherent plan, he has had a week to work on this, obviously with all the mid week matches you get less time with the players to work on.

This Portsmouth team are decent but they are not Ipswich of last season good, we may have over performed to be around the play offs but we are not as bad as we were last season, so no excuses for Buckingham not to send a team out that can compete.

I suspect they also received a hell of a lot more support than Des has.
That’s a very good point. He hasn’t been able to bring in the people he really wants in the same way Manning did. And we also saw with Mapp.

What a great Dub it was this week. I would advise anyone listen to it.
Great analysis of us by Ben Purkiss.
Some very levelling comments and statements that paint a good perspective.
