Ex Player Alex Rodriguez Gorrin

Still no sign of Jack Stevens in training…Wayne Brown just posted a video of the keepers in training which he isn’t in either 👀
Hoping he's got a knock and is in the gym  Ox Mail put something up the other day suggesting he's going nowhere but it is worrying he doesn't look to be around

Edit: Did anyone else know he's from London?? Assumed he was an oxford boy

Jack was born in West London and was at Chelsea’s Acadamy from U9 to U14, he was released as they deemed he was never going be tall enough, he moved to Newbury with his family when he was seven or eight years old. After Chelsea he was at Barnet Fc with a few other ex Chelsea team mate like Jack and Harry Taylor but was not offered scholarship terms even though playing for U18s when he was 15. Was never at Reading FC and like Shandon joined Oxfords Youth set up after spending a year at JMA which was a football/school set up linked to Reading FC where students trained at near acadamy set up while studying for A levels.

Simplest explanation is he is self isolating after either testing positive or being a close contact of someone who has.

So for those who went, how did the new players do?
From listening on RO it sounded like Seddon was MoM,
Thornley sounded solid and Williams did OK as well.
Is that fair?

Impressed with Williams really energetic & good delivery, should have scored. Thorniley & Seddon looked really comfortable together & as I said in his thread was impressed by Bodin. Whyte didn’t look comfortable on the left

Seddon looked very good, got forward well and had a good engine, plus a decent ball in as well as some clever passes.

I wasn’t blown away by Williams personally, he worked hard but didn’t look particularly dangerous and couldn’t really take his man on. I can see why a few Portsmouth fans I know weren’t that bothered about him leaving.

Thorniley looked very solid, but not as good going forwards as Atkinson.

Bodin had some very nice touches but lacks a little pace

And Whyte is clearly still a hell of a player, but needs to play on the right.

Seddon looked decent overall. Very attacking and clearly has a sweet left peg, but will be interesting to see what he’s like going the other way when he’s properly and regularly tested defensively. Cambridge got in behind him after he was caught too high up the pitch a couple of times today, including once right at the end when they could have quite easily nicked it had Brophy not smashed his shot straight at a defender. Still not really sure how fast he is, weirdly. Couldn’t really gauge that. Looks promising overall.

Thorniley was very composed on the ball. Didn’t seem to rush and took his time without looking in danger of getting caught out. He clearly trusts himself in possession. Wasn’t the best in the air and their number nine held him off pretty easily whenever there was a loose or bouncing ball, and he doesn’t look very fast. Quick strikers against him and Moore could get interesting if they can get through the channels. Hit a couple of 40+ yard diagonal balls which came off but also hit a few more strays that ran out for goal kicks. Looked competent at least, which was pleasing as he hadn’t even been at the club for a full week. Give him another 2/3 games to fully get up to speed and he looks like he should be okay.

Williams worked hard and put in a couple of decent looking crosses. He isn’t a speed merchant but that isn’t to say he can’t and won’t go past a few players this season. He’s not slow, he’s just not a Whyte / Barker / Browne type who will turn on the afterburners and blitz people. He reminded me a bit of Alex MacDonald in the sense that he wasn’t very flashy or full of tricks, but he was committed and not afraid to get his shorts dirty (oo er). Got quite easily riled after fouling someone in the first half and got booked for his troubles - he put his hands on their player a little too quickly for my liking. Clearly doesn’t need an invitation for a ruck.

Whyte doesn’t look like much of a left winger. I know there is a tendency these days to invert wingers so that they cut in on their stronger foot, but it didn’t seem to suit him at all. Looked like letting him attack players on his stronger side and just get at them like in his first spell might be the way forward. Don’t think he’s a cut inside and curl one inside the far post sort of guy. He’s much more dangerous when he’s skinning people and then cutting in the other way, so that he can drive the ball across goal. Thought he looked like someone who is going to need to find a rhythm after a stop-start couple of years, but it was good to see him back.

Bodin looked tricky but like someone who has maybe lost a yard of pace. He didn’t seem slow as such, just looked like he used to be quite quick and is now a pretty average speed. Had what looked like a really good chance at 1-0 to kill the game from six yards but it went over. Seemed in the moment like he raised his leg and went for a volley when he should’ve ducked his head onto it. One really good piece of play when he flicked the ball around an advancing man as he was being closed down - did them all ends up. Clearly confident and has ability. Will be interesting to see if he can stay fit and whether he starts much, or is mainly someone who can give 30 minutes off the bench most games.

Thank you. Excellent summary

Good summary

my opinion on these players is: Seddon personally I think will be an upgrade on Ruffels from a defensive point on view & looks to add goals as well which is a bonus

Thorniley will never replace what Atkinson could go with the ball at his feet carrying the ball from his penalty area to oppositions penalty box but will be a no nonsense defender who hopefully will know when he comes against pace where to position himself to read the danger & will be a solid defender at this level

Williams I don’t see as a regular starter once Whyte & Holland are both fit & on form both will be the stand out wingers in this team that’s not to say Williams won’t have an impact on this side though & same goes for Bodin

Whyte should be back on the right wing once Holland’s fit & available again

Incomings by 31st August: I think it’s blatantly bloody obvious we need a defensive midfielder in during this window I’m not sure if KR has the full trust in Gorrin as much now, I know he’s been down with COVID during pre season but struggled to get back into the 2nd half of last season & his form was really off during that period, I don’t like Brannagan playing in that position even tho he can spray the ball around well but he always seems to gets caught out in position at times in there plus KR mention on RO a few weeks ago he will return in the number 8 role again this season

That could be him done for the season.

With the uncertainty on whether Kane will be recalled, I think we've just added a defensive midfielder to our January shopping list.

Mad that we didn’t bring in a proper holding midfielder of his type to deputise/challenge Gorrin in the summer

Thought he was just starting to get back to his best too. Massive shame for both him and us. If he's definitely done for the season, take him out the 22 and agreed get in a specialist CDM. Cam and Kane can do well there, but we need a specialist for the games where we'll be under the cosh more.

s**t news. When he got up and walked off on Sunday, it didn't look too bad but that's a bad one.
