LGBTQ+ / Rainbow Laces

We don’t any longer need rainbow days or whatever it’s called - everyone’s in the same boat and on board the happy ship.

Sadly this isn't true, and that is precisely why these days are needed.

You only have to look at some of the comments on social media when Proud Yellows was announced as a support group of LGBT+ fans to see that there is still discrimination and ignorance within our fanbase.

And denying there is a problem (no matter how isolated it may be) shows the same ignorance.

If something as simple as changing shoe laces or the corner flags helps someone feel accepted then I'm all for it.

I’ll have to take your word on that but in circles I move around in it’s not even a conversation - everyone accepts everyone. Don’t you think though that if there is a minority, in 2024, who are still struggling with it that they are beyond educating and it’s not worthwhile trying to educate the uneducated? Why are we trying to get it so wholesome and cleansed - it won’t happen. To keep beating the same drum in the search for perfection just dilutes the work that has been achieved in making society as inclusive as it’s ever going to be - in my opinion.

I don’t wish to be controversial but is it really a football clubs place to get involved in, of all things, sexuality? Who really cares whether you’re straight, gay or bisexual, everyone’s welcome to come and enjoy the football and then go home and participate in whatever you want to participate in. I’m not sure we need this bracketing of people and their preferences. No discrimination, everyone’s on an equal footing, this sort of stuff seems to me more divisive than it is helpful. I repeat - who actually cares? I certainly don’t.

Well mind your own business then!

We have one thing that unites us irrespective of what we do in our personal life so why create individual niche`s? Society has changed so there really is no need for pigeon holing individuals when there is a core commonality. Do I care if the person 2 seats away is pink, brown, gay or bi? No I don`t. We have a commonality.

Always nice to see one of our "representatives" being inclusive of other views.....................

Agreed.

As you say, football fans (particularly those who support the same team) have natural commonalities. Why not focus on that? Why separate us into gay Oxford fans and straight Oxford fans? We're all just Oxford fans!

The day the club won't need to support this kind of thing is the day they do support it and people don't ask 'why are we supporting this, can't we all just be Oxford fans'. The fact you are even asking the question shows that work still needs to be done.

I cannot see how this compartmentalising of people is doing anything positive. How can it possibly be uniting people?

I'm not sure I follow this logic?

Surely people wanting to be seen as one group united regardless of our sexualities is exactly what we want?

As soon as an initiative such as this you always get people who aren't impacted by the issues questioning it, instead of either supporting it or making no comment. The day it doesn't get negative comments, which these are, is the day it isn't needed.

They are not "negative comments".

We all have a commonality.

What the bloke/woman two rows away gets upto in his/her private life has nothing to do with me, or others nor do we need to highlight it.

Any person will be treated in line with the commonality - the club we all support.

This has grown into a "football issue needing a campaign" from abuse/chanting some 20/30 years ago that no longer takes place because society, as a whole, has changed.

oh god, I wouldn't have mentioned this lovely thing if I knew the daily mail brigade would gear up the "trite, fake-egalitarian, B*****s machines" to full pelt.

"Who cares about people's sexuality anymore"

https://www.stonewall.org.uk/about-...gbtq-people-continues-stonewall-slams-uk-gov- Huge rise in anti lgbt hate crimes

https://tfn.scot/news/football-clubs-show-homophobia-the-red-card specifically at football "The Equality Network's Scottish LGBTI Hate Crime Report, published this year, reported that 15% of LGBTI people had experienced hate targeted at them while watching football and 51% said they had witnessed it."

It is engaging with a new bit of the community to try to get more fans in, in the same way as they engage with all manner of community groups. But nobody ever says when they go into old people's homes "Who cares what age they are? it's our commonality as football fans that matters" because it's transparently very silly.

You are wrong. Your very questioning the need for it instead of accepting it for what it is shows it is still needed. The fact that it is getting angry face responses on Facebook from a minority shows it is still needed.

"What they get up to in their private life"? Are we still in the 1970s?

Are you bothered what people do in their private lives? That seems a perfectly reasonable thing to have said - I’m struggling to see the connection between saying that and the 1970’s. That comment is absolutely reasonable, in 1974 or 2024.

It's the context it is being used in.

God this is hard work for some isn't it.

I love OUFC and I feel blessed that I get to go to the games, meet friends and feel part of the community that surrounds it.

If the club’s backing of this initiative made just one person feel that they could also be part of the OUFC family and experience the benefits that I do, then I’m delighted that the club are involved.

Explain the context then because I’m not seeing it at all with that comment.

The bigger problem in all this is actually people like you - hell bent on making a case for something that, in the main, isn’t existing and that all ‘normal’ people are perfectly accepting of. If it’s the idiotic handful, leaving unpalatable emojis, then good luck in convincing them and what an absolute waste of time and effort trying to. Who cares about those idiots?

One person? Really? Why don’t you make a case for banning cars - surely worth it if it saves one death on the roads🙄

I'm not making a case for it at all, you are the one arguing for it's need, not me, so don't presume you know either me or my intentions. The club are supporting a local initiative which the people affected deem important. How does it affect you? It doesn't, does it? So why are you even commenting on it?

It is the idiotic handful that shows things like this are still needed.

Most of the comments I've read on here have been positive - people agreeing that someone's sexuality simply doesn't matter because we all share and support the club as one.

Everyone has the right to question social initiatives, particularly when they're specifically pointing out our differences. Singling people out based on their sexuality is the exact opposite of what we want to happen, right?

It's not about them, it's about actively showing to lgbt people that we condemn that. Just because it is a small minority that make ape noises at black footballers it doesn't make it a waste of time for a club to condemn it and actively show black people that the club welcomes them
