Ex Player #36 Jay Matete

Interesting to see some of the usual suspects bemoaning a poor transfer window and complaining why we only sign crocks - from memory no one was moaning about this at the time, the forum seemed to be in collective delirium without a hint of worry.

Do love the revisionism on this forum sometimes when certain posters want to prove their opinions right.

No real surprise he shouldn't of passed a medical in the first place .
Godwin is another example of medical & science department failure .Should be fit by August 2024 to start a game .
Marcus Browne failed a medical at Charlton but we sign him .Imagine the surprise again when he's injured .
Its just a reoccurring theme that needs to be addressed .

What a load of crap.

In fairness the club probably had more information about his fitness than the users of this forum when we signed him

Matete, Burey, Goodwin, Bennett, Cumming - fair to say it hasn't been the best window. Not quite one to rival Robinson's last summer window but none are nailing down a place and that includes Dale, who has probably been the best. Bennett is a good player, you can see that, but is he really going to rival Leigh when it comes down to it. Burey, who knows what's gone on there. Goodwin, probably the one we were keen to see the most but hasn't looked fit, hasn't played particularly well but has come in to a side that just don't create chances for goal scorers. Cumming, the less said the better - terrible signing.

In your own words...clueless.

Unpopular opinion, but for the formation that Des wants (and is clearly going) to play, with two out-and-out wingers and an attacking central midfield - the fullbacks have to be first and foremost defenders, and I think that Bennett is actually a better bet than Leigh to play LB. Not as good in the air (is anyone?) but positionally sounder, and arguably a better passer as well.

Though it's probably a moot point for this argument, because he surely wasn't a January window signing anyways, given that we picked him up in November?

Matete signing a big disappointment. We never got to see 10% of the player we saw play for Sunderland and Plymouth - just some shell of that guy.
Was a position we desperately needed to fill as well as we are severely lacking in central midfield right now. Given McGuane's lack of form, we now have little choice but to play Cam at the base with two out of RR/Bodin/Tyler in front of him. But the next time we come up against an opponent with an energetic, physical midfield engine room (like Bolton), it may not be pretty.......

In what way? Care to elaborate?
We have had great value from Edwards, Burey, Matete and Goodwin right.

Absolutely glorious recruitment in terms of value add. When we praise the recruitment team highly for a great job (which we did in the summer) it’s fair to say they had a bit of a "Mensis Horribilis" in January.

Is that the same Bennett that started our last league game instead of Greg Leigh?

If you’re going to troll at least try a bit harder.

If Des has a do or die game tomorrow then Leigh starts, simple as that. His goal threat as much as anything. He was taken out of the firing line after the Bolton game and a hectic international schedule ahead, perfectly understandable to most.

You’re talking rubbish again and you’re talking as if your opinion is a matter of fact, it isn’t.

By his own admission to Rad Ox, Leigh has acknowledged that his role has changed under Des. More emphasis is being placed on defending as we are playing with out and out wingers.

With the change in role in mind, it is perfectly plausible that he in fact WOULDN’T start in a ‘do or die’ game for Des.

Funny you mention a ‘do or die’ game, the way you have been talking down Des’s performance, it could be argued that our game against Vale 10 days ago or so, could have been construed as ‘do or die’. Bennett started and we won 2-0.

Don’t let facts get in the way though, buddy 👍🏼

Firstly, we have a game on Friday, not tomorrow.
Secondly, Des had a 'do or die game' against Port Vale in the last game and picked Bennett over Leigh (and rightly so as Leigh has been poor by his standards for a while now).
Thirdly, you said earlier today that managers don't care about international football and will do what's best for them, now you are saying Des has taken into account Leigh's international games?

We know that most of what you put on this forum is rubbish but at least keep it consistent please. It's quite amazing how many times both you and Mustard contradict yourselves.

Make no mistake, Des acknowledged this game had to be won, and as a result Bennet came in because he's more solid as a traditional left back. Dick talking nonsense again.

I said it over a month ago, Leigh isn't a left back in a Des team, his attacking threat is all but thwarted and should he decide the venture forward, we leave gaping holes at the back.

And who has consistently looked a pretty good player
He and Owen Dale (without knowing the cost) I expect will rank highly in our best pieces of business this season. Close to 15 new arrivals overall and I’d be surprised if they’re outside anybody’s top 5.

Don’t think enforced free transfers mid season come much better than Bennett has been for us.

I’d say not being able to get Leigh a role in a side is also a sign of what a poor set up we’ve seen since Des has come in.

Why is it? Bennett is a defensively better left back than Leigh, Murphy is a better out and out winger than Leigh.

Leigh would be brilliant in a Karl Robinson team but Des likes to play with more solid full backs and an old fashioned type winger.
We had years of being moaning about playing square pegs into round holes and now you want to shoehorn Leigh in to the team even though the way we are currently playing doesn't suit his game?

I don’t want to shoehorn Leigh in. Never said that did I?

I think we should set up in a way that allows our best players to play so for me it’s a major issue long term. I rate Leigh as one of the best full backs in the league.

I think the swap of Stevens/Leigh to Long/Bennett under Des is a major issue going forward as well as the roles of McGuane/Rodrigues.

I think he’s only really improved Murphy & possibly Harris since coming in.

I’m not sure what his actual style is since coming in.

The changes could be justified if it led to better performances of more players and better results. Factually the tiny changes of tactics & personal have been for the worse.

This just sums up that you need to get everything done in the summer. We have been lucky with Dale in that he didn’t fit into Blackpool way of playing, but most players available in jan have something wrong, either need games after injury, haven’t played all season as not wanted or you have to pay a premium on the transfer fee

Oh dear, how embarrassing. We do love a crock don't we?

We wanna be careful, people will start calling us Croxford United soon
