The really obvious fact from tonight is that the players are clearly not playing for Des Buckingham and that is a huge problem.

The performances are nowhere near being acceptable - and they have not been since he was appointed - but when the players don’t want to play for the manager or believe in the Manager you have to part company. That’s the harsh reality of the situation.

It is simply not working and it will get worse. Bring in Michael Duff or someone of that ilk and prepare for 2024-2025.

I’ve never been convinced by Moore and IMO for us to go up a level I would say we need better than him at CB. He doesn’t and never really has fitted in to the way managers want to play by bringing the ball out the back.
He got away with being the sitter when he had McNally next to him but Brown is too similar and neither of them can really bring the ball out.
He's far better than Brown.

222 away fans.

I’d suggest this speaks bigger volumes than the result tonight about how as a fanbase we truly feel.

Huge summer ahead on and off the pitch if we want this club to keep its soul.

On tonight's showing it seems that the players have stopped playing for Buckingham and the dressing room is lost.

Buckingham's body language and bland footballesque answers from his interview on Sky and Radox left me painfully watching a broken man. The club needs to either hire him from tomorrow a top class mentor or relieve him of his duties it is as simple as that.

The performance from the players tonight and of Buckingham's touchline no show was embarrassing to say the least. I really think their isn't any respect in the camp atm and I don't think Buckingham can handle what it takes to be the top dog. He probably is a really nice guy with a clip board upbringing which isn't going to help him in this point of his career. He has to be tough and emotional and what is showing at present is neither.

I said in a post earlier that against pompey there were some flames....but since then they have once again been extinguished so very easily that the time has come for the board to have some B*****s and either sack him now or get him in a big name mentor to immediately bring some solidarity and respect for the next 8 games.

Woah COYY'S.

Sat in Sandbach services refuelling for the remaining 2 hours drive home, god the things we do for our club.

Haven’t really read through what’s been said, but can’t imagine my feelings are much different to the majority. It was a disgusting performance from top to bottom, the initial setup was wrong IMO and the gaps between our midfielders was staggering, I can’t believe nothing changed after the first 15. Our full backs were way too narrow and the first goal proved it, second was an absolute omnishambles with both Leigh and Cumming making huge errors. Third goal, okay, that was unlucky, but where was the closing down? the urgency? Fourth goal, absolutely torn apart - probably the best goal we’ve conceded this season. Fifth goal, after the third you close down the edge of the box, but didn’t happen, felt like Cumming could have done better but haven’t seen it back, doubt I’ll ever bother checking. It is painfully obvious that we are STILL lacking in the positions for the last 5 or 6 seasons - a proper CDM, an authoritative CB and a right back. Matete isn’t the answer, he was never the man for any of those roles but there was ecstasy when he signed, anyone who had watched him for a sustained period would know he’s in the Mcguane mould. Panic signing. Brown is a loose cannon and unreliable against good teams. Moore needs legs beside him, not some league 1 codger who will only go downhill in his career from now. Long, the less said about him the better.

The thing that upsets me the most though is the final whistle, players stood joking with their Bolton counterparts, ambling over and barely looking apologetic. Dale looked royally fucked off but apart from that there didn’t look an ounce of hurt on the faces of the players, that ultimately is what the fans remember. Is it a mentality thing? Do we have leaders in our squad? Moore, Brannagan, Mcguane, Long, Brown, Bodin, Murphy - all part of our abysmal run last year, all part of abysmal runs in previous seasons, why does it keep happening? Why has Brannagan not left to go elsewhere? Does he believe he has it in him? We can see the ability, but would he rather stay where he has it easy? He seems to be the exception to most of the fanbase, but if anything he’s part of the problem. That’s a spine of players who look great with no expectation, but as soon as there’s a bit of pressure they crumble.

I want it to work for Des, I still think he needs time and proper support structure around him, but he simply won’t get it with these clowns in charge, and when the players give up on you it’s usually curtains. I don’t trust this board to even get another appointment right so for me he stays, but there’s so much unnecessary pressure (some self inflicted) on him to deliver a good start to next season.

Another point on the useless C***s that are slowly ripping the soul out of our club, and this is probably a hangover of last weeks fans forum, but how blindingly obvious is it that they save face as the bare minimum and do *nothing* else. It’s so reactive rather than proactive. Oh you think the communication isn’t good? Okay, don’t worry about that lads, we’ll sort it. Oh the support structure for a new manager is shambolic? Don’t worry lads, we paid a hefty release clause for Des, and gave him a brand new (injured) 400k striker who was mooted even before he got here! The assistant manager who Des wanted and had in the building decided to walk from the offer at the last minute? That was HIS personal issue, nothing to do with the fact we offered a basic contract and didn’t trust you were the right man.

I’m not angry as such, I’m just upset. I’m upset that these things keep happening to us, I’m upset these group of players aren’t good enough for what we want, I’m upset that we’ve got one of our own in charge and he hasn’t been supported enough. It shouldn’t come to this where we turn against him, but he will be the fall guy and we’ll rinse and repeat next season with a new manager, with the same core of players who have let us down so often. I’d absolutely love if Des showed a bit of fight and attitude, called people out, got the fans on his side and uses siege mentality to stabilise our season and have a bloody good go at it in the summer, with a whole new core of players who he wants. I don’t think he has it in him to do it though, I think he’s too nice and it’ll be him who’s out the door first when there’s dozens of people who should be gone before him.

It’s just upsetting.

Anyway, engine on, back down the M6. Night all

Honestly not surprised by the performance and result. No point banging on about it but des has to be sacked. Gonna stop posting now as it just pisses me off.

I said it before mate. I knew of three players that had downed tools.

Everyone ripped me for it, but it’s true. RR and MM are two of them.
But why? He’s played them, not slated them. Why don’t they play for themselves e.g. they could perform, get us promoted with them getting the accolades for this rather than just downing tools!

I’m not saying that I disbelieve you, it’s more along the lines that I just don’t know what they gain from downing tools .

Sacking Des will solve very little, especially if a certain clique within the squad don't approve of his replacement and sulk all over again.

I said it weeks ago. If that is true, then they can stop stealing our money and f**k off out of our club immediately.

Sack them for breach of contract. Christ knows there's enough evidence over the last 20 games!

I’m so torn on the subject of players throwing the towel in.

The simplistic old fashioned part of me still feels it’s on a manager to put the camp together, build the cohesion and use that as a platform to build a belief in what they’re doing. This doesn’t just apply to football or sports but management anywhere. A team that’s pulling together will win games regardless of tactical inefficiencies. He arrived to a dressing room where that has been built and they probably bonded more when let down by Manning. So what exactly has he done that’s brought it down on its head? It smacks of fragmentation and I can’t quite understand how it’s come about, but they obviously don’t respect him.

I fully accept that players have a duty to play to their maximum effort regardless of the manager but these are players who only months ago were giving their all. They haven’t suddenly decided Oxford is a s**t place to be. They’ve disengaged and I’m afraid responsibility for that is on Des - it’s a hard, high pressure job, no other way to skin it. I think it’s the wrong time for him and pray he can rebuild and go again. But this needs ending.

No excuse for it, what if the fuckers don’t like the next manager? The one after that?

They are well paid, Buckingham is useless enough that he would have got sacked eventually, but we all slag off players like Pogba for having this sort of attitude so why tolerate it from much, much shitter players, he won a World Cup while Rodrigues was a non league player last season.

My list would be for tonight’s players

Cumming unsure
  • Stevens leave
  • Moore keep
  • Brown leave
  • Leigh keep
  • Brannagan keep
  • McGuane leave
  • Rodrigues needs to buck up or go
  • Dale Keep
  • Murphy keep
  • Harris keep

  • SUB: Long leave
  • SUB: Bodin leave
  • SUB: Goodwin keep
  • SUB: Henry leave
  • SUB: Bennett keep
Murphy, god no. He’s weak and the majority of the time lacks a final product.

Add to that, that once he gets a new contract he will mysteriously not be available again, well that’s until the new contracts expiry date gets within 4 months.

The really sad part was many saw this result coming. Whilst Des was giving the we played well nonsense, everybody saw we were scraping lucky results and looking clueless. Des may well think there is a plan but he really ought to tell his players what it is because they don't understand it or believe in it. The comparisons with Clotet are scary.
Also scary the players didn’t seem to think it was coming either e.g. Dale’s comments after the match.

It’s been as clear as day is day and night is night that that kind of result bee coming. Our performances other than the Pompey one have been absolutely awful.

Saved from having to watch this tonight by it being on Sky and travelling. Would be easy to say I am not entirely surprising based on performances. But I am! Whilst we have been very poor most games throughout Buckingham’s tenure, apart from the Portsmouth loss, five nil has to be and is shocking!

Some on here were trying to suggest last Saturday we played well, but we didn’t. We were really poor against a marginally poorer team who one can expect will be relegated in May! The speed of decline has been frightening and the lack of performance under the current manager has long past the concerning stage (one good performance in over twenty games)! If we hadn’t paid a fortune to bring him in, it would, even with Tim Williams as CEO, be a foregone conclusion what happens tomorrow. But this said, it’s a hard one i am sure for them to swallow if we really did pay £400-500k compensation?! And how was he so highly rated at the CFG (assuming he was)? What due diligence did TW undertake before making the appointment?

I can’t see it getting better, but still feel we might as well see what happens over the next two or three games. Although I have no idea why i feel this other than an acceptance that this season is now over (we all hope it isn’t, but the reality is we are playing like a team teetering around the relegation zone)!!

Your constant dislike of Brown tonight seems odd when you could list 8 players worst than him tonight.
All of which, including him are not good enough if we ever want to progress. I’d honestly keep about 4 players from the squad we have, brown is not one of them. That is just my opinion & I respect yours Steve.
