Manager/Coach Des Buckingham

Whilst his title isn’t DOF doesn’t Faz kind of have this role at the club?

With the way modern football is going, the idea of a DOF seems less relevant these days. You have teams of analysts, specific coaches and even loans managers. You wonder where a DOF would fit in.
Isn’t it actually the complete opposite of that?

I bet all top 30 clubs (which we’re apparently trying to become) have a DoF in place.

Everyone you have mentioned would report into the DoF. It leaves the head coach to focus on just that, coaching. The idea of a manager is less relevant these days

Anyone who wants a little bit of a boost should listen to Des’ latest Ifollow interview. Players coming back from injury and new additions on the horizon will all help with a strong second half of the season. I liked what he had to say and how he said it. Also a heartfelt tribute to Stan, glowing tribute to Beadle and support for Edwards.

Having said that I couldn’t help feeling that Des was showing a little strain. And no wonder, he’s walked in to a series of issues with injuries etc that would challenge anyone.

I was a little unsure of him to start with - probably because, for me, he was an unknown entity as a manager and it’s taken a bit of time to get the measure of him. But as a person he seems top notch and there’s no doubt he’s having to work his nuts off at the moment. I’m sure though that brighter times are ahead and as fans, I think we all need to rally round and show Des some love and support. I’m not entirely convinced he’s had all the support from higher up that he should’ve done - that’s based on the lack of new support staff and obviously I don’t know who is to blame for the delay - so the least we can do is give him some support through these tough times. I’m sure brighter times lie ahead - on the pitch at least 🙏

Hackett confirmed as assistant

The recruitment and development of talent is vital. When Des joined the club, he made it very clear that he wanted to assess the current staffing set-up before making any changes or bringing in new coaches. I’m delighted to confirm that on the back of this ongoing review, Chris Hackett will be assuming the role of Des’s Assistant to work alongside Craig Short and Lewis Price. We have also agreed a deal to appoint a First Team Analyst and are in the process of finalising a start date for them.

So, Hackett it is. Looks like we've been turned down by a few. I was hoping for someone with a bit more experience and know how to accompany a fledgling L1 manager. Smacks of cheap option but I guess we have to trust the process.

So we've waited 7/8 weeks to appoint someone who was in the building anyway? Absolutely ridiculous

It would have been absolutely ridiculous to appoint Chris Hackett without interviewing other candidates - this way it feels that everyone should be able to have cnfidence that Des has chosen the person he can work with and that they are qualified for the job.

Glad it’s “sorted”
Seems like a sticking plaster .
Hope it’s successful

I agree, but that doesn't take 7/8 weeks! A week or two after Des' appointment and that point would stand.

And for all the clamour that when Des gets some help things would improve.. changing Hackett's title makes zero difference to that. He clearly couldn't get anyone outside the club to take the job..

Exactly, Des needs to know he can work with Hackett. Perhaps he was hoping to work with someone from his previous clubs and work permits weren’t available. I’m pleased we have someone who knows the players and the club.

I mean, I'm not against Chris Hackett as assistant, by no means. But what it does mean is that things will be very same old same old on the pitch. What we have seen in the past few weeks will be the status quo for the rest of the season...whether that's a good or bad thing.

Let's see...full support to the management from me.

So its either the cheap option or none of the other choices could work with Buckingham, or Buckingham couldn't work with them.

Everything calls out for experience and we get the intern, this certainly isn't the way to get everybody on side.

Nothing adds up at all. Last month an assistant with League One experience had met with Buckingham 3 times and an analyst was in the building. We appoint Chris Hackett and an analyst will be appointed soon. All this, in an industry where appointments work at lightning speed.
I know its pantomime season and Tim looks like he wants to be the evil pantomime dame or this is his audition for the next series of traitors.

A formal statement to wish us Happy New Year on 9 January and update us on record setting retail numbers and people think we aren’t smashing the fan comms?

He doesn't specify what year so could really be stepping it up and getting it in early for 2025.

I'm absolutely stunned that we've gone with Hackett. I know for a fact there was someone else in the building which was close to done - if there is a reason as to why that person is no longer considered then we need to hear it. Des is obviously going to defend CH and so he should, there needs to be a proper explanation from the club as to why we've gone from first choice to seemingly 5th choice (or the cheap option)
Stevie kiniburgh????

If you 'know for a fact' someone else 'was close to done', then surely you have the resources to find out why it didn't get over the line?

The sense of entitlement is staggering - 'if there's a reason, we need to hear it'. Sometimes things don't work out as you hope/expect.

Just out of interest, what reason would you accept?

Hackett confirmed as assistant

I hope we are going to get a replacement for his pervious role. I’ll be very concerned if we get a statement along the lines of ‘he will continue with the great work he is doing within the academy and combine the two roles thanks to the great set-up we have at the club’
