National News Cost of Living Crisis

Details of how it would be financed are to follow but I guess a greater windfall tax would be the easy answer.

No problem either way if it jolts the Conservatives into making a decision.

What we need right now is some sort of certainty going into the next 6 months or so.

We could also return the tax rates on North Sea Oil/Gas production that were significantly reduced/stopped in 2015 back to the original levels or higher as well.

Pensions have been earned as a right. Private pensions have been saved for.
Many are in the fortunate position of having their own houses bought with years paying mortgages often at rates of 15%.
They will argue they have often gone without if they’ve not been able to buy outright. Buying on credit has often been avoided.
The challenge many have now is they’ve borrowed to finance purchases and interest rates have started to rise.
The pandemic with three lockdowns has caused much disruption and financial disarray. Government debt has increased and has to be paid down at some point.
Those who advocate spending billions to get out a recession need to think again if it is wise to build up debts for future generations

Pensioners. Do you really think pensions are hand outs.

Do you consider people on disability/illness benefits to be hand outs?

Considering the hostile approach on people with disabilities and who are sick, from the application to actually receiving support (if lucky), and doing their utmost to ignore people's doctors/consultants to reduce the benefits bill.

I have first hand experience of dealing with ATOS when they were doing applications (even though I was already receiving support prior) and they ignored medical advice from a world renowned Professor who was treating me to turn my case down. Fortunately I'm intelligent enough to get through the process and had help with legal support from a welfare charity for the Tribunal. I didn't go into the Tribunal itself as it wasn't necessary as the judge called the ATOS/Govt case out as utterly ridiculous, one of many considering how many people won tribunals.

6 months of stress for nothing, again one of many, some of whom actually died from ATOS/Govt targets to arbitrarily reduce numbers receiving sickness benefit. 2 weeks after the Tribunal decision, ATOS sent another application form! And the form, wow, another level of utter incompetence.

Plenty of people receiving such applications didn't have the mental capacity (those with serious mental health or the confidence) to go through the process though and lost out as a result.

Why do the Tory members consider this as a handout but pensions aren't?

As they didn't kick up about it as a membership even when it was a big thing, rather the Tory mantra (part of May's hostile environment I believe) was get rid of the frauds and slackers. Pensions take up a large slice of the overall benefits bill after all.

I can't wait to see what EY makes of that...

I got a payrise this year, I earn a decent wage and so does my partner. Yet we are looking down the barrel of having zero disposable income very soon. That is not right.

Would that be because you now expect to have the "nice things", purchased with said disposable income, all the time?
Compare what you have now to what you had 10, 20 or 30 years ago and everyone is "better off" or has more outgoings.

And reduced fuel consumption, due to cost, will have environmental benefits so Greta will be happy. :)

Side note - South West rural petrol prices are about 8-10p a litre more than Midlands cities, that is rinsing people who have no alternative and what the powers that be should be looking at.

Energy consumption at EYTowers(Mk2) is low - solar electric & water means the average bill is about £3 a week after FIT is applied.

Compare that to the ice cream kiosk in West Bay that charges £9.00 for two double scoop cones.

And then you get taxed when you are dead...................

Well yes, because I've worked full time for many years. This is the first time in my adult life I am looking at no disposable income whatsoever. But thanks go your political party, my hard earned is going to the likes of BP and Centrica.

Nice things include watching live football too. I simply cannot afford it anymore.

And before you suggest it, I do have another job.

I absolutely dread what it's going to be like for people worse off than myself.

I receive DLA and yes I had experience with ATOS. I receive benefits as I’ve been passed unfit to work on health grounds.
If Truss gets in and on what she is saying she will do with the cost of living with tax cuts that will benefit. I can assure anyone now that people on benefits irrespective of whether they haven’t a job or are disabled and pensioners will not benefit.
Starting next months for three months every household will receive £66 a month towards their bill(s) then aft the three months there will be £67 towards your bill(s).
The way people are talking know that won’t touch the sides in the help towards the bill(s).
Whoever wins the Tory leader election will have to start with the cost of living crisis and get that dealt with within the first month of winning that election.
The result of which should be of great help to those who need it not those who are on super tax.

I agree with your point about whoever wins will need to get hold of the crisis. I'd have far more belief that Sunak would do a better job than Truss and Trussonomics.

I think the issue about freezing the cap as suggested by Starmer is that it is actually cheaper to do this for everybody than the cost of means testing for something that has to be introduced relatively quickly.

However, that money going to BP & Centrica et al will return in kind when you retire.

Money & Life is the world's biggest Ponzi scheme as more and more folk are recruited at the bottom to push the "benefits" further up the scheme.

Now we are running out of people willing to be at the bottom and everyone in the middle has been having the foreign holidays, new cars, new houses etc etc burning the petrol & gas and having a jolly and those at the top have got richer as they do in such schemes.

Now "they" are doing away with money and it is becoming a digital transaction only....... cards, bitcoin all that..... makes it easier to just add zero`s here and there and let that filter back down.

Worlds gone.

I don't think I've ever had such twaddle in my life
