Is there really any conversation to be had as to who is the greatest footballer ever ? England, Spain, Italy, internationally, everywhere he goes he’s just phenomenal. How Manchester United have got him for £20m is astonishing business.

Yes of course he is just brilliant, and the slight t**t factor just makes him more interesting. But he’s pretty old! So the fee and his wages are hardly a bargain.

Yeah I forgot about the wages ! The fee though looks ridiculously cheap when you see what he is still capable of, like tonight v Ireland. I still think he’s a cast iron minimum 20 goals a season player in the PL over the next 2 or 3 seasons and whatever his salary might be that’s a snip at £20m.

I still think Messi pips him, but both are phenomenal.
Ronaldo has shown it in multiple top leagues and at an international level has dragged a mediocre Portugal side through tournaments... think for that reason he deserves the accolade more than Messi, be interesting to see how Messi does in France

Don't know whether he is the greatest ever considering it is pretty impossible to compare different generations. You'd have to compare with Eusebio, Pele, Stanley Matthews etc.

He is the best of this generation for me though and beats Messi. Partly because of his international performances compared to Messi who has mostly flattered to deceive in major tournaments.

He is a phenomenal.player but for me him and Messi are pretty neck to neck ( Ronaldo won the Euros with Portugal and Messi the Copa America with Argentina).
Maradona and Pele come into the conversation as well in my view.

Messi and Ronaldo best of their generation
In 10 years it will be who is better mbappe or haaland (spelling maybe wrong) possibly sancho as others have said pele maradona you could also add Zidane fat Ronaldo Henry they are the best in there generation

Jamo is good but perhaps not that good.

I would be amazed if anybody ever suggested that Mbappe or Harland are in the same league as Messi and Ronaldo (they will never reach the same level for a decade plus)
Zidane and Brazil Ronaldo were world class players but again in my view not in the same class as Messi and Ronaldo.
For sure we are witnessing a very special era with possibly the best 2 players of all time.

Messi rates higher for me purely as being more of a team player.
There isn`t much to choose between them and I`ve been lucky enough to see both playing live in their pomp which was a beautiful sight to behold.

The difference (imo) is Messi was playing with a lot more higher quality of player (ie. Aguero) throughout his international career whereas Ronaldo single-handedly pulled through Portugal on a number of occasions. The situation has improved recently in terms of depth for Portugal (Jota, Fernandes etc) but early on I don't think that was the case.

Maradona etc would have to be in the conversation.

I think the Argentina side Maradona dragged to WC glory in '86 was more average than the Portugal side that won the Euros. Maradona at his peak was better in my opinion than either Ronaldo or Messi, but his time was a lot more fleeting. Never saw Pele outside of news clips so can't really comment on him.

Personally, I find this debate tiresome. No-one can be declared "The Greatest Player EVER!!!!!".

The conversation is always weighted in favour of forwards and those who played in living memory. This whole Messi/Ronaldo debate symptomatic of marketing individual players over the club they play for.

Football is a team game.

True, nobody talking about Lev Yashin, Beckenbaur, Baresi, Bobby Moore... and that's purely down to their positions.

I didn’t mean they were at the same level just that in this generation those two are the best but in other generations before there were players people would have said were the best ever

And the game has changed, broadly speaking players seem to be more "universal" in terms of playing positions.
