As a matter of interest, what kind of disrespectful inhumane semi activist keyboard hero writes such stupid comments? Oh. Danny C(unt) Ever worked with the displaced victims of war Danny? Any experience of helping the victims of unspeakable atrocity? Ever come out from behind the safety of your keyboard and confronted the reality of human degradation and helped the victims?
That requires balls and the preparedness to get off the sidelines and make a difference, Come back when you have a CV thet reflects that. Mine is available

Calm gentlemen please.

It's such a shame that anyone has raised an objection to providing shelter to those fleeing terror.

In short posts, its all too easy to be misunderstood. If people are getting angry about misunderstandings on the internet whilst in a warm home, in a safe place, how are those expecting to be dragged from their homes and executed in the street for having dared to dance to music be feeling right now?

In my humble these people are genuine refugees.

They put everything on the line for "The West" and the consequences are that we (The West) now need to step up and put them somewhere safe away from danger.

It will be interesting to see how the population who have enjoyed 2 decades of freedom react to the new normal and, equally, how much leeway "Taliban 2.0" give them when the world isn`t looking.

Allegedly Nero played the fiddle while Rome burnt .....and Raab basked on the beach in Greece while Taliban forces took Kabul , delegating HIS responsibilities as foreign sec to a very junior lacky

Bojo & co prove time and time again they are not fit for purpose. Public schoolboys way out of their depth ,with no empathy or feeling of responsibility for ordinary people, both in the UK or anywhere globally

Complete & utter b0ll0cks.

Nobody, and there are plenty involved across many nations, predicted the speed of turnaround.
The withdrawal, which has been taking place for many months, reached a tipping point.
Mostly because elements of support, such as air support in the countryside, empowered the Taliban.
The ANA then saw that they were having the rug pulled out from under them.
Short of remobilising and/or an aerial "shock & awe" campaign what could the US, NATO or the UK have done?

Think for yourself and stop reading the Mail you are better than that!

There has been one hell of a f*ck up somewhere across a number of the allied forces, particularly when it comes to intelligence and the strategy to move out of Afghanistan. I saw John Irvine refer to https://www.itv.com/news/2021-08-18...new-road-on-site-as-taliban-closed-in-on-city this article yesterday on the news. That's either personnel and officials in complete denial or completely oblivious to the fire in the kitchen.

As has been mentioned things have been falling apart for a number of months as consultants and allied support was withdrawn. The Taliban have sat there, waiting and watching as the door literally opened up for them. I watched an interesting report on Vice News where a reporter was evacuated by the Afghan special forces (well trained and financed by CIA and US military). The reporter had been following them as they fought the Taliban last week in Kandahar. To cut a long story short the 1000 of them got ready for a "final battle" with approx 2000 Taliban approaching the town. Before it was due to kick off the commander received a call from higher ups saying that they were to stand down and an agreement had been made with the Taliban.

Allied forces (particularly US & UK) have completely taken their eye off the ball with this one since the Trump agreement and now we're in the mess we're in. I would say that Raab and Johnson should really have looked at cutting short holidays, or not going when it looked like the ANA had all but stopped any kind of resistence.

Agreed, the Mail has become more toxic than any paper I can remember. In my view, it should be banned.

The politics had obviously progressed a lot further than the conflict on the ground.
Which is almost a mirror image of when the Taliban "evaporated" in late 2001 when a new leadership was installed.
Even then "we" had already started moving resources from Afghan towards Iraq in 2001/2002

Makes no odds who is on holiday on either side!

You plan for it as a very possible scenario though especially with the US pulling air support which was integral to how the ANA operated. Also, the Taliban had over a year to plan this Op and considering their objectives this was a fairly obvious outcome as well as they were already ramping up operations prior to NATO leaving.

As for the "what if's", lots of things such as train the Afghan Army to fight as an Afghan Army rather than a mirror of the US Army, leave air support/maintenance in place etc etc. There will be lots that could have been done, it depends on the timeframe you take. The criticism from the ex-military etc sums it up for me.

And in a major international crisis like in Afghanistan when British citizens and Afghans who are highly vulnerable, it is not acceptable for the Foreign Secretary to be continuing his holiday as leadership at times like this is a key part of his job. Fortunately, the UK Ambassador has shown that leadership unlike Raab who abdicated his responsibility.

Whatever one's view on how many Afghans should be accepted by the UK - and whether they are truly refugees or not - the notion that we shouldn't take any because we're already full / there are no houses / there are no jobs shows a distinct lack of knowledge about the UK's resources and abilities.

I'd treat one poster's idea that they should go to Wales or Scotland because there's more room there with the disdain it deserves. These debates do tend to bring out the hard of thinking.

Any Afghan whose life is in danger in that country because of the service they gave the UK during what turned out to be a virtually pointless war needs to be helped.

Must have a good paperboy to get your daily copy all the way out in Malaysia..
It does come in handy as I know whatever the Mail publishes, then the opposite is more likely to be the truth.

The Mail clearly targets the gullible and those with low IQ. Its criminal how the MM gets away with it.

However, said Ambassador on the ground probably has far more practical leverage and solutions for those citizens than Raab sunning himself for a couple of weeks in Greece or wherever he was.
You also have to question why some folk, again on the ground, didn`t get out of Dodge sooner.
Then you get complete wasters like this who are worried about boosting their Instagram flock than anything else.

Invoice him, he`ll think twice then!

The Ambassador will be dealing with operational issues etc, Raab should be dealing with the big picture/strategy as that is his job for such major international situations. He has abdicated his responsibility/doing his job and further demonstrated how he really isn't up to the task/out of his depth.

Whilst I agree, bill the student, in this instance it is a squirrel when comparing to Raab not doing his job.

More than 40 country’s involved in the Afghan mission, each should take refugees as a % of involvement in the mission .
It may not be popular with right wing governments who won elections on the back of their immigration policy but they have to take responsible for their actions even if it makes them unpopular with their supporters.

That’s where you and I will disagree when it comes to holiday.

Im sure there’s many on here who are in roles where they have had certain projects they’ve had to keep clear as they come to an end. Additionally I’m sure there’s many (myself included) have had to cancel/move leave at the last minute because something important has happened during a project.

Raab should have curtailed his holiday much earlier when it was being reported how quickly the Taliban were advancing (as early as the 13th in the MSM) and Johnson shouldn’t have even considered going to Somerset.
