National News Official 2019 General Election Thread

Nigel Farage appears to have blundered this time by choosing to put up candidates in all constituencies. He might have been better occupied focussing on unseating pro EU candidates in marginal constituencies

Nigel Farage has become the biggest risk to Brexit actually happening.

Given what the polls have been saying, in a Farage and Brexit Party-free world, it would seem that BoJo would likely win a majority - and would then deliver his form of Brexit.

But if Nige really does field candidates up and down the land, and campaigns loudly that Boris' deal isn't Brexit, then it becomes possible that the Peterborough by-election is repeated over and over - and then who knows. Anything from a minority Tory government to Prime Minister Corbyn is possible. And Brexit may or may not happen.

People told me that the Brexit Party's move in Peterborough was a power play. Showing their strength to make sure they got what they want from the Tories.

Well, apparently not. Apparently they're just fanatics without an ounce of pragmatism who won't accept any form of compromise - anything other than the hardest of hard Brexits. And it's just possible that they'll keep us in the EU as a result......

Maybe he still hasn’t played his ace card yet though.
i agree he is after a hard brexit. His intention is to write to everyone in the country maybe outlining BJs brexit agreement. It is quite possible that the Conservatives won’t like what comes up.
It looks like we will still be in a customs union and still be paying into the EU a quite substantial sum of money. It could be that we are signing up for something worse than we already have

Maybe Farage is playing hardball so he can get a deal with the Tories and a nice job. How about Lord Farage of the People' ambassador to the USA?

Lord Farage Who sang Hitler Youth Songs as a kid and still hangs out with German NeoNazis has an even better ring to it, I think.

What neo nazis does he hang out with? Just curious.
I did hear something about him singing songs as a kid. I think the Leni Riefenstahl film used to have quite catchy music in the background so maybe a few kids used to sing along to it.
Maybe Corbyns times in his early adult life endorsing Stalins Russia and Maoist China could come up for re-enactment.
Should make for interesting viewing

Sssshhh! Don't f*****g tell him!

Farage, Dominic Cummings and (by way of limitless ambition and ego) Boris Johnson, are all seeking to create a new Conservative Party. They are already more than half way there.
They are smart enough to know that single issue parties, like UKIP and the Brexit Party, won't cut it in the long run. They want a Tory Party that can tap into the aggressive, individualist, populist mood. Farage is simply the shock trooper in this process. They want a Tory party that will no longer be 'One Nation' or interested in appealing to the more liberal end of the right-wing spectrum.
Cummings is a compulsive blogger and his latest is very revealing (amongst its 10k words). His strategy favours another hung Parliament after this GE (so is not perturbed by the Brexit Party standing against Tories) followed by a second referendum in 2020, which he sees as some kind of experiment in explosive division.
The recent history of the Republicans in the USA demonstrates a very similar process. The Tea Party was the "Farage" factor over there.

Dominic Cummings news - he's not into running election campaigns, so the messaging won't be his.

You lefties can get angry about Isaac Levido instead, a young Aussie from the Lynton Crosby tree of influence. He recently ran a successful campaign for the Australian Liberal Party and is known for his forthright style.

Interesting that both parties have "found" the magic money tree.
Although if a beleaguered electorate believe them or not is another thing.

NHS Fed say "don`t use us a political football"...... Jeremy Corbyn has said he will end austerity in the NHS via a "proper funding settlement", with the exact details to be announced ahead of the launch of the party's manifesto.

And for balance.............. The Tories are expected to trumpet extra spending on the health service in England, including a £2.7bn investment for six hospitals over five years and £100m for a further 34 hospitals to start developing future projects. (This is in fact true we got $450 million of it)

This election is perfectly set up for the Aussie style. Just you wait, absolutely unrestrained ad hominem attacks on Corbyn, capitalising on the fact that there is a sentiment around that people don't like him. Full-on negative campaigning. This worked against Bill Shorten - big pictures of his face next to slogans like "the biggest Bill you'll pay this year". Corbyn's too easy a target for this, and those who like their thinking easy will lap up the message.

Are they tarting it up ready to sell?

Nope. Mostly re-structuring service delivery.
A lot of community stuff going to smaller, more local hospitals which saves folk dragging in 30-40 miles for appointments.

Extended ITU (currently being built), new Childrens Hospital (single site with ECMO service), new Maternity hospital and a day case theatre "hub" at Glenfield.

If it all happens it`ll drag us into the 20th century and out of Victorian buildings! And I don`t care which political party does that!! ?

It is also part funded by selling off excess land and unused (old!!) estate that isn`t fit for purpose.
