International News Russian War With Ukraine

Strange turn of events that stopped as suddenly as they started. Speculation that Putin "bought him off" but what could he offer Prigozin that he didn't already have, apart from the top job?

I'd still advise him to avoid balconies and long staircases for the foreseeable future...

And one of the sad footnotes of it all was seeing on the news this morning Russian citizens cheering and shaking hands with the mercenaries leaving. Yep, let’s cheer that bunch of criminals, rapists and murderers. Tragic when they’re seen as currently the only choice over Putin.
It’s such a s**t show over there.

Probably best he avoids drinking tea too.

I think that description would be better applied to the regular Russian army than to Wagner (the mercenaries you refer to) which is a relatively well organised and professional outfit. Wagner have been very useful in the Central African Republic, where they have helped defend the capital Bangui from the various rebel groups and insurgents trying to take over the country.

But aren't many of the members of the Wagner group people who are actually convicted criminals (including rapists and murderers) - they were let out of prison and 'forgiven' their sentences if they'd do 6 months fighting for Wagner? That's certainly what's been said.

(Not that I am playing down and crimes committed by the regular Russian - or any other - army).

It's worth noting from the item at 11.52 am that the events of the weekend got a lot of coverage in the Russian media. While it's true that some journalists may have fallen foul of Putin, there is undeniably much greater freedom afforded to the media in Russia nowadays than there ever was in the Communist era.
In my opinion, over the past 10 years, Putin has made life so difficult for independent media that in Gorbachev's time, before the fall of the Iron Curtain, these measures would have been considered hell. The fact is that the current dictator did everything smoothly, and all media have long since become digital.

For what it's worth I think it's a put up job ! The Wagner leader going into exile in Belarus could be the start of taking over the country which he can do easily and don't forget they now have nukes !

I'm not sure about Wagner, but I am certain that the regular army DID benefit from criminals given early release from prison. That happened quite early on in the war (in 2022) while Wagner's involvement is much more recent. I think Wagner had to move some of their men who were tied up in Africa.

‘Useful’ for their wallets, certainly. Doubt anyone else is doing cartwheels.

From the ever reliable Wikipedia's Wagner Group page:

In December 2022, United States National Security Council Coordinator for Strategic Communications John Kirby claimed Wagner had 50,000 fighters in Ukraine, including 10,000 contractors and 40,000 convicts. Others put the number of recruited prisoners at more than 20,000

They’ve lost half their fighting force since then.

Nonetheless, it appears that even the SMHS would have half a chance of taking Rostov on Don last weekend.

But isn’t the president of Belarus a big friend of Putin
