Home Match Day Thread 23/02/2021 L1 OUFC v Portsmouth

I actually think we played better tonight than Saturday. We always struggle against teams who attack high up the field not giving us time to play from the back etc.

Pompey were more physical than us, but felt we could have got a draw in the end.

Need a win Saturday to get back on it. Got a lot of difficult games coming up over the next 4-6 weeks!!

Five points from a possible 24 against the top seven exposes us.

We’re a good side, not a great one though. Our defence has a year less experience than I would like, the midfield misses McGuane and no strikers look capable of hitting form presently. The management is bit naive at times too - a few more ideas for set pieces and changing things up would be good.

All things we can work on. We won’t go down but we won’t go up either. If this side did make the playoffs, we wouldn’t win them. There’s at least seven sides better than us anyway.
But was said tonight that McGuane May not play again this season.

We need to stop the 5 minutes of passing along the back 4 every time we have the ball and look for decisive telling thru balls our striker(s) can feed off rather than the odd ball every 10 minutes.

2nd best allover the pitch

silly niggly fouls allover the pitch

no energy no drive

sideways and backwards when with the ball,

yet again a side out of form is allowed a stroll allover the Kassam instead of us going for the jugular

Ruffels: Bang average against any side above the bottom 12. Absolutely woeful on the ball and got caught out far too many times on the left hand side.

Henry: Useless, yet again.

Sykes: Beyond the odd fancy trick, offers very little going forward and is a defensive liability.

Winnall: Shocking. No, he didn’t get service that he needed but his touch was poor, he had no pace and he couldn’t hold up the ball or chase for the second ball without giving away a foul.

No way Henry, Sykes and Winnall start on Saturday. If we are serious about going up, we need to pick our best 11.

Stevens
Long Moore Atkinson Ruffels
Gorrin
Brannagan Lee
Barker Taylor Shodipo

Based on tonight, any other selection just isn’t good enough.

Can't start a second half well. Conceded 2 at Donny, went behind against Wigan, should have conceded against Bristol and Ipswich just after half time. Fine margins decided by the 10 minutes after half time. The manager needs a good look at himself because whatever he is saying at half time certainly isn't working.

Can't play Sykes, Henry and Lee. It is one of them for one position.

The quality is there; the style of play is wrong resulting in no service for the striker(s). As soon as Pompey had the ball it was quick decisive thru ball for runs by several of their players making runs. When we get the ball it's pass it across the back of our own half for 5 minutes allowing the opposition plenty of time to re-organise and we then attempt to get the ball to a lone striker - predictable and ineffective. KR is going to have to twist and change tactics and pretty soon if he wants to get in the play offs.
And you would think we would have learned

Uninspiring Yawnfest again. Attractive footballing team my a**e. Half the team can’t pass the ball adequately and many of the so called “big” players are massively under performing or perhaps aren’t quite as good as they’re hyped up to be. Never seen so many misplaced passes over the last 8 or so games.
