Home Match Day Thread 23/02/2021 L1 OUFC v Portsmouth

You are right about Winnall. This all started a few games back and nothing has been done to correct it. Just not good enough generally.

A massive game and we did not show up until the dying moments against opponents who were incredibly well organised and gave us little until the death.

Barker, absolute class at the end with two bits of real quality but we just didn‘t do enough for long spells and switched off after the break.

U’s midfield is a real conundrum and Robbo will be cursing himself for playing Sykes centrally - he did little and Henry again was poor.

We wasted the first half with a load of absolute nothingness. We blew that tonight.

Simply not good enough, kr. Too much tinkering? It shows even when teams are in a poor run of form, we still can't beat them. Not good enough for promotion , on performances in recent weeks.

Please let's not start another game with that midfield three set-up that way. They provided nothing, and gave no outlet at all when the defence had possession.
Changes should have been made at half time.

Thought we might nick an undeserved point right at the end but wasn’t to be.

Played poorly, didn’t look like we could create anything till right at the end when we just threw it in.

I said I would take staying in this division and the club existing at the beginning of the season and with both of those things looking like happing alongside a return to actually going to games I can’t get to downhearted about this season, it’s such a surreal one that it feels like I am watching training sessions at times but obviously the winning run was much more entertaining than tonight.

No way are we getting in the playoffs. Outplayed and outfought by an average portsmouth side. We still cant beat any of the 'better' sides

Average or winning when not at their best? Kind of like how we’ve done recently against Wigan and Bristol Rovers.

They did a job on us that I thought we’d do to them. Get in front and hold the opposition at bay. Good sides can do that to you.

If they’re average and they’re definitely better than us, what does that make us?!

We need more in midfield. No options, no forward passing, no bravery. I’d like to see Elliott Lee in there with Brannigan.

Barker needs to start. We looked more dangerous with him and Shodipo on the wings.

Finally, Sam Winnall should get a long, long spell out of the side. If you think Dan Agyei would play as badly as that then you need to give your head a wobble (Karl).
Winnall needs the ball into him, he was chasing it

Sadly we have two strikers who couldn't score in a brothel at present - difficult choice as to which one starts Saturday as neither look good enough
Not being funny but I’d rather have Julian Alsop’s Nan up front over what I saw from Sam Winfuckall tonight.

Deserved nothing from that game, we were woeful. I don’t get why that urgency we showed in the last five minutes wasn’t there from the off. It’s so infuriating to see us play with some urgency, tempo and passion only in injury time. Tonight showed we just aren’t good enough.
It was only because Pompey started to play deeper (nerves?) and gave us a bit of space to play in. Our players struggled to create the space before that.

Mid table.

Very poor. If we can't get going until the last few minutes when we are one down then we are in trouble.
Very few decent moves, poor passing and even then mostly backwards, few crosses, ball up in the air all the time, seemingly no tactical thought.
The midfield has completely disintegrated.
Winnall looks like an old carthorse, Sykes flatters to deceive and Brannagan is not a defensive midfielder.

Mid table mediocrity.

Agreed.

Clear and obvious lack of quality tonight.
The quality is there; the style of play is wrong resulting in no service for the striker(s). As soon as Pompey had the ball it was quick decisive thru ball for runs by several of their players making runs. When we get the ball it's pass it across the back of our own half for 5 minutes allowing the opposition plenty of time to re-organise and we then attempt to get the ball to a lone striker - predictable and ineffective. KR is going to have to twist and change tactics and pretty soon if he wants to get in the play offs.
