Do we know where this new variant of the virus originated e.g. which country? I wonder why the media haven’t asked this question unless I’ve missed it.

Also thinking these latest bans on travel to other countries is a political one.

Also, still finding it hard that China has had less than 5000 deaths and no cases of the virus for months. I wonder how they’ve achieved this if true.

I can’t blame them, if only the same had been done here months ago when flights were still allowed in from China and Italy we might have been in a much better position today.

Denmark, Belgium, Netherlands and Australia all have the new variant already.

Technical blurb: "A SARS-CoV-2 variant, referred to as SARS-CoV-2 VUI 202012/01 (Variant Under Investigation, year 2020, month 12, variant 01), has been identified through viral genomic sequencing in the United Kingdom (UK). It is defined by multiple spike protein mutations (deletion 69-70, deletion 144, N501Y, A570D, D614G, P681H, T716I, S982A, D1118H) present."

It was identified within 5 days by COG-UK which is the largest consortium in the world monitoring the genetic differences in Covid.

The source is currently unknown but it is most likely to be someone with a prolonged Covid infection that has generated and shed a new variant.

Seems to be more prevalent amongst the young, more virulent..... and mostly "a bit of a sniffle"....
