Manager/Coach Des Buckingham

Actually Odin could probably do a job for us. He's getting on a bit these days of course, and the one eye thing would probably restrict his peripheral vision and depth perception, but he'd still be better than a lot who have turned out for us.
Doesn’t he play for Wigan?

It is a bit strange to assume that healthy, fit athletes can't be good footballers, its either an out of shape, maverick with health issues but a lovely touch or a roided up monster whose first touch doesn't stay in the county. I have a feeling that is a hangover from 5 years of our Karl, its ignoring the teams that regularly beat and came above Robinsons teams though, who were that combination of good, athletic footballers drilled into a well organised team.

I think this is probably correct. And part of a wider culture of 'you can't have it all' that pervades our fan base and most definitely this forum.

We see it even now with 'should we go for Edwards or Browne (or both) as our gamble for next season' - without any consideration for the fact that you can have neither and yet still find a player or two with technical ability who is also robust.

It also completely ignores the fact that we've had players like Brannagan who has the required ability and can be relied upon to play 40+ games a season.

Keep in mind Brannagan is one of the top paid players in League One, I think if you're willing to pay championship wages you'd expect ability and robustness. Ultimately if you splash the cash you've got the best chance of having a winning team - nothing in football is more certain than this.

The challenge for the club (and most at this level, unless you're Derby/Sunderland/Sheff Wed) is finding the future Brannagans of this world, i.e. players with either ability or robustness who can be developed so that they have both.

I’m not sure robust players cost more, Brown and Harris seem indestructible as well as being among our better players. Wingers are probably more likely to get injured given the speed they operate at and the number of times they’re fouled but robust ones aren’t necessarily worse players

If results are all that matter then we won't fluke a playoff place but we'll finish exactly where we deserve.

You know what I was referring to. We’ve been poor in many games, and should have cemented our place long ago. Northampton Lincoln, Stevenage, Bristol Rovers away an awful watch, and dropping two points away at Shrewsbury. Just two of those games we could be home, instead we have to rely on others dropping points, and we have to get a result at a resurgent Exeter. Who will want to finish their season on a high at home. Winning on Saturday is not going to be straight forward!!

Finishing outside of the Top Six this season will be classed as a failure.

Then we can all have our end of season assessment, on where and why we think it went wrong, and you and a couple of others can say why we were unlucky, and why Des will be good for us, and where he’s shown he’s the one for our future.

'Have our end of season assessment" - that already seems to have been going on for months!

If the word "footballers" is doing as much work as I think it is I totally agree.

You keep spouting this nonsense yet are in no position to know what is deemed success vs failure!

Ultimately the only ones able to actually deem it a failure are the board, and I’ve seen no suggestion that they’re operating in the black and white world that you live in where if we finish 6th, it’s a success, but 7th is then a failure, my guess is that it’ll be firmly in the middle of the two

So 6.5th then? ;)

Well, for the "Des lovers", it's been a few insufferable months on here, what with the "Des haters" rushing on here after a defeat, and in some cases posting the same rubbish 40 times a day.

If the "Des haters" skin is so thin, maybe they shouldn't have given it out?
Problem is the Des Haters have had more defeats to comment on than the Des Lovers have had wins…

I think there’s enough of a track record to assume very few will be ducking the conversation!! I’ve no idea why it has to be so tribal and that’s the thing I have issue with.

Pah. This is amateur hour. You should try hanging out at the 'immigration' thread

My two pennies worth:

  • I really like Des as a leader and figurehead for the club. He comes across really well and authentic. If I was a player in the side he is the sort of manager I would really want to work hard for
  • We are far too dependent on quick wingers and where we have played well it's when RR and Tyler G have been effective in the middle as well as the wings working well. Goodwin returning will give us more options up front when he is fit eventually. I think he'll come through as a good purchase
  • There are still question marks a bit on tactical decisions for me but I think Des suffered massively from not having a complete team around him from day one and the injury crisis in the team was ridiculous epitomised by the Derby game on News Years Day. I'll also freely admit that I reckon Des knows more about tactics than I do.
  • Josh Murphy will go I think. He is looking for a new deal given the amount of interviews he is doing to put himself out there. Such a shame we only saw him at his best towards the end. He's endured a few tough years and I wish him well
  • We have the core of a really good side but have to keep those players and inspire them with the vision - Brannagan (obvs), Moore, Leigh, Tyler G, Brown and Harris are all essential. But there are plenty of squad type players we need to keep as well - Sam Long, RR and Billy Bodin. I'm in two minds about Cumming (so to speak).
  • We should let the following go with our thanks - James Henry, Marcus Browne, Tyley Burey and Finn Stevens.
  • Marcus McGuane - I have no idea about. I hope he finds his feet again. By all accounts he's a nice guy and clearly talented.
  • We need a stronger mentality in the team I think. Too often this season the team faded a bit and got frustrated. We need some wise heads to drive the others forward when the going gets tough.
  • AND WE NEED THE NEW GROUND
  • Finally, I'm still not over the ref at the Wycombe (Stockbridge) and the outrageous penalty given against McGuanne and then we didn't get one which was identical.
  • To be on topic for this thread I 100% back Des for the next season when it comes - hopefully in the Championship giving Bristol City a lesson in exciting football.
