Home Match Day Thread +++ FAC 4th Replay - OUFC v Newcastle United MDT +++

The main difference between the sides was the pace they had up front. You can get pacey players in League One but usually with little end product, like Almiron and their other winger who came on. We couldn't cope with Saint-Maximin, couldn't tackle him and couldn't stay with him and he eventually got his goal.
We need to start games with a bit more confidence, it seems to take the opposition scoring to wake us up.
Other than that, there were times when our football was so much better than theirs, and those moments increased as the game went on.

I will, but I can’t see my opinion that Moore was the better of our two centre backs changing.

Just looked at that second goal again... have to gain some perspective here I think. It was a quick ball over the top when we were pushing and yes Dickie was caught on his heels 1 on 1 against a £40 mil striker?

But I also think he had to stall his run to avoid clicking his heels and so avoiding a defo red card... depends how each of us see it.

But I personally think he and Moore had a solid game.

Too easy to be critical of those moments in the game, because yes we did make a lot of errors at times and it took us a while to join the party, but we certainly showed what we can do once our tails were up.

Thought Newcastle had a lot of pace up front.. torrid for us at times.

Onward and upwards. Hopefully the squad can use this as a springboard and realise that we are more than capable of climbing up the league. We will have some very tired legs against Peterborough on Saturday, but if we can continue with the same quality, we will get something from the game.

Well done lads, a brilliant performanc.

A quick Google reveals that NUFC`s First team squad is valued at (roughly) £277 million pounds.

Think that puts it into perspective that, collectively, we done a job on them.

Top night under the lights & Grenoble Road actually looked nice on the telly!

RB weakness ? Explain to me “as if I was a two year old” exactly what Sam Long didn’t do last night?
I don't think last night was the night to criticise Long given we were playing a premiership team. I don't like to criticise him anyway as he is someone who gives one hundred percent but this is an OUFC forum so....his strengths I'm my view are he is a good defender both positionly and on one one situations. However, I think anyone can see he lacks quality and composure on the ball and could be better going forward. I do, however, think he has pace and he is young enough that those things can be worked on. He strikes me as someone who will do everything possible to work on his game.

After a fantastic game like that and three quarters of your post slagging off Mackie. Well well
Yes, because I look at that game and had we had an outlet up front where the ball didn’t just come straight back, I genuinely feel like we’d have been talking about a win!

I think everyone else has clearly highlighted how well the likes of Sykes, Long and Moore played, that was never in doubt

Hopefully any tiredness will be offset by confidence from having more than matched Newcastle. It took a superb individual goal to beat us in the end.
It's been said many times already but it needs repeating until KR gets over his blind spot: Mackie offers absolutely nothing and is now a liability. Our game was transformed once he was off the pitch.

I’m surprised about the praise of Dickie, he’s usually immense but I thought he looked slow last night, his lack of pace was brutally exposed at times

I think that's deeply unfair - Dickie had a tremendous game. I've no idea how we allowed ourselves to play so high
when Joelinton outpaced him for the second. There was no cover in behind Dickie and £44m Joelinton raced through.

Not many better centre halves than Dickie outside the Champ is my view.

He needs to be at his best at Peterborough on Saturday against technically the league's best striker in Toney.

Why are you complaining about Sam Long? He was tremendous.
I thought Long had a decent game overall, but for their winner he just backed off and off of St. Maximin - he should have at least tried to get a tackle in as the result couldn't have been any worse.

That's what I thought watching live, and now just looking at the highlights it looks just as bad. Didn't close him down, backed off 5 yards and kept that distance running backwards.

I certainly see him as a true professional who gets on with the job asked of him and works tremendously hard. I can imagine him being great for a manager to work with.

I can only recall one ball he put in last night that sailed over the bar but for the most part I felt the rest were pretty good.. Happy to be corrected.

Has anyone mentioned the great save Mackie made their keeper pull off? That was a nice couple of touches from him.

You could argue just the same for Gorrin for the 1st though.

Watched Steve Bruce on NUFC. He thinks they deserved it! he then goes on to say they need a break. FFS they’ve played 29 games, we’ve played 39 with a much smaller squad, what a snowflake.
Over the past couple of games, I've lost a bit of respect for Bruce. Patronising and disingenuous and from what I can see, not a very good manager either.

I agree, for a guy that takes a lot of criticism around his ability in the final third I thought he look pretty effective against a genuine premier league defence. A couple of his crosses were sublime

A broken clock is right twice a day! Happy for you to feel differently, just really cannot understand it myself
