Oxford Utd 5-3 Swindon Town

Goals from John Durnin (2) Jim Magilton and Joey Beauchamp (2) sees the U’s defeat Swindon for the first time since April 1982
in a thriller at the Manor.

U’s : Veysey - Robinson Evans Melville Williams - Beauchamp Lewis Magilton Allen - Durnin Aylott
Sub: Penney

Att: 7,995

Something I never knew, it wasn't Joey Beauchamp but Josey Beauchamp (commentary on his 1st goal). :)

Brett Williams was right footed but Brian Horton brought him in on loan from Nottm Forest to play as left back,
Garry Smart was playing at right back with Les Robinson at left back. Robinson got an injury and Mike Ford may also
have been injured at the same time. When Williams went back, Smart filled in a left back and David Penney
played at right back.

I can remember Penney scoring from 25 yards in the top corner against Wolves at that time from full back!

Thirty years ago today United found themselves 3-0 Down after 23 minutes at Molineux Stadium, Wolverhampton
to a Steve Bull hat trick. United fought back in the second half to draw 3-3 with goals in the 88th and 89th minute
from Mark Stein and Paul Simpson. In fact Simpson missed a golden chance in stoppage time to make it 3-4 to the U’s.

One of my favourite United teams. My god look how s**t Molineux is!

ON THIS DAY : March 17th 1998

This was the last time Oxford Utd defeated local rivals Reading FC in Oxford.
A brace from Joey Beauchamp and a rare Martin Gray strike gave the U’s a comfortable victory
over the struggling Royals who were to be relegated at the end of 1997-98.

Reading started 1998-99 in their shiny new £50m Madejski Stadium.

U’s : Whitehead - Robinson Davis Gilchrist Marsh - Beauchamp Gray Smith Murphy - Francis Cook
Subs: Banger, Wilsterman & Powell.

Ron Atkinson and big Torquay United striker Robin Stubbs were both shown red cards
for fighting each other at the Manor on Boxing Day 1963. The image above looks later than 1963.
