National News Sir Keir Starmer

This isn't just the Tories losing support, but voters are turning towards Labour under Starmer. It is becoming clear that the antisemitism row and the environmental u-turn rows are not enough to detract voters from all of the issues this country faces because of the 14 years of Tories rule.

Ste is right to say that by-elections are different from general elections, but no one (apart from Chemical Ali himself) can spin this into anything other than a disaster for the Tories and a huge boost to KS and Labour.

Once again I'd be wary of these figures. It is very easy to make a protest vote in a bye election when the MP will only sit for 6 months. How many of these voters will go for Reform on GE day? There is also the turnouts, if Essex's figures are accurate then it was very low which once again could be seen as a form of protest which may not hold for a General Election.

A lot of things to consider at Tory HQ for sure.

I recon there will be an announcement in March, with a May GE.

Whist @Essexyellows has his Tory tinted glasses on he does have a point about turnout, and this being a bye election.

Thank you to those who can see that, whilst the Conservatives may have some difficulties, the alternative is hardly exciting the electorate.

As for the "headlines" posted by @QR they really need to be considered in some level of context.

The one I know a bit about, both through work & personal experience - NHS waiting lists.

The NHS virtually shutdown on routine work for 18 months.

As someone whose patient pathway stopped halfway through that period, even though I knew who to speak too, I was in the queue with everyone else.
Luckily I was able to go private but I understand the majority of people can`t.

Strange irony that it was the same NHS consultant at a different hospital, maybe if he did more NHS work his list would shrink but consultant contracts have never worked like that.

Those lists will take years to get back to the levels they were, there is better diagnosis, earlier treatment and massive technological advances in both which, by default, has put more people on waiting lists both pre & post Covid

Whichever party is in power it will not change in 2,3 or 4 years and we are back to that short term political cycle rather than fixing the long term problems.

Homelessness - its not as simple as "the government" - there are local authorities, health services, addiction services etc that are there but many homeless people, for various reasons, choose not to engage with them.
In Leicester we have a hybrid Council/Charity Homeless Outreach Team who are on the ground directing homeless folk to the services in place, there are also a number of voluntary religious groups that are out every night offering food etc. If the individuals do not want to change they can`t be forced to and society can only do so much.

Potholes - local authority highways issue. Both the City & County around this way do a pretty good job but they are constrained by regulation and/or contracts. If a pothole is below a certain width & depth they leave it! Then, come Jan,Feb,March they realise they have a surplus of budget and you can barely move for resurfacing and road repairs. Another public sector failing - "spend it or we won`t get it next year".

Crumbling schools - if that is a reference to RAC then its a historical issue that only recently came to light.

Dentist "deserts" - again many have decided that (amazingly) private work pays more because it costs the patients more. Should the NHS contract compete with that? Same as consultants - it can`t. Takes about 7 years to qualify as a dentist - again its not a quick fix and either party will have the problem.

Partygate - really? Most people saw it for what it was - people working in the eye of the storm and letting it slip for a moment. I`m pretty sure most of us inadvertently or deliberately broke the rules at some stage.

Cronyism - people were looking for a quick fix to a number of issues, in such times you speak to people who you think are best equipped to provide, if it turns out at a later date to be improper then due action will be taken - Michelle Mone & her husband have had circa £75 million in assets frozen by the NCA.

Try thinking a bit...............

Look at the number for the by election - they aren`t, they are not voting.

Yep, because nothing else has happened in the world that had to be fixed....................... wonder how many in this parish got Government support during Covid?

The Covid-19 pandemic resulted in very high levels of public spending. Current estimates of the total cost of government Covid-19 measures range from about £310 billion to £410 billion. This is the equivalent of about £4,600 to £6,100 per person in the UK.

Official figures show that spending in 2020/21 was about £179 billion higher than had been planned before the pandemic for that year.

Who do you, or anybody, thinks will rebalance those spreadsheets? A clue - you, me and everyone else.

Partygate? Most people saw it for what it was - entitled public school folks treating the populace with utter contempt, consciously breaking the rules while telling normal people they would be punished for far more justifiable lapses. And then joking about their deceit and lying to parliament.

You’re right it really is easy if you think about it for a bit.

Um here’s where we differ
Homelessness- was resolved during COVID. This is a matter of government will and they chose not to permanently resolve the issue.

Potholes- has the budgets of local councils increased under these governments. No.
They have way less money as more and more services are required to be completed at a local level with less income from the government.

Crumbling schools- they knew about RAC years ago and decided to leave it to the last second to do anything about it. Literally at the end of the holidays.

Dentists- yep the government pay less than it costs to do the work so dentists decide not to do the work numbers on a spreadsheet and definitely at the governments door.

Partygate- most people were burying their dead without being able to invite the whole family let alone console each other, or even have a wake,
Whilst the government had lots and lots of jollies. Never underestimate the anger we have for this one

Cronyism- just think about that one for a second. This one goes back to the party gate one. We were burying our dead whilst they gave their mates billions of pounds worth of contracts to deliver crap.

Some people will never see the crooks for what they are. Maybe it’s because they are getting their fill and are all right Jack. But please understand we are angry at how this lot have treated us. And let’s face it when the election does happen the rest of the apathetic labour voters will turn out too.

In Tory led Cherwell, we have to pay to have garden waste removed for recycling. 4 years ago it was a service covered by our council payments. Then it was decided to charge £25 a year for each bin. This year, the price has shot up to £49.00, just under double.
Robbing Tory bastards.

I shouldn't hold my breath about this being reversed once Labour get in sadly.

Robbing Labour bastards :)

Seeing that Reform UK gained 10% of the vote in both by-elections, and having the best part of absolutely no idea who or what they are, I decided to take a look at their website and their snappy little manifesto thing.

In terms of a protest vote for disillusioned Tories, they have absolutely tapped into many people's frustrations. They've gone a bit too 'Daily Mail' on the climate issue, but otherwise when people actually see what they're about, they will absolutely hammer what's left of the Tory vote.

Previously the Tories could hold on to some of their electorate by saying "well if you vote for them (previously UKIP) you'll get labour", but nobody gives a s**t anymore. They're absolutely done for.

The Tory MP on Politics live said exactly that and Richard Tice (Reform Leader) just laughed at him and said to paraphrase "Why should the Tories get a free ride for 14 years of incompetence".

I can't believe they're actually going for that line again. It's like both major parties' PR departments are controlled by AI.

"Quick, we need a picture of Rishi/Keir in a hardhat in a Northern factory. That'll win a few votes!"

That’s local government and actually not unique to Cherwell .
A change of government will not alter this policy, unless monies were allocated to councils and specifically ring fenced- but why would they.

Winning bye elections is one thing though, how many of those that were won by Labour/Lib Dems were held at the next general election? It is much easier to do a protest vote against the government when you know the MP will only be sitting for 6 months...
Don't be surprised if amersham (the libdem by election win) reverts to Tory -

She blitzed the constituancy while the tory barely showed his face, but since getting in she's gone largely quiet, while the Tories have picked a popular familiar face who is all over the local media so........

240 litre bin is £44 a year here under the Conservatives .............. was £63 for 120 litre in the Commie City. Labour - charging you much more for far less. :ROFLMAO:

Is that the Royal "We" ? They say a week is a long time in politics - 6 months or so might seem like a lifetime.

We probably differ on why we vote as well then - you should vote looking forwards not backwards.

You can`t change the past and can only try and make the future better.

Although looking backwards can give you a good clue as to what is going to happen in the future.

Agreed...and the last 14 years is as good a place as any to remind us what a disastrous embarrassment this government have been.

No wonder the Duty Tory doesn't see the value in anyone looking back🤣
